24.01.2022 Why your old mate can wither and die eating a brand of food you trust. Pedigree is a long established trusted brand. It’s also a product, designed for profit. L...et me explain some reasons why the health of your senior dog may suffer eating a product such as this. All dogs require a diet of highly digestible protein. This requirement increases in later years to retain all aspects of health and well-being. Just so we’re on the same page with highly digestible protein, the Wikipedia page for Senior dog diets states eggs and fish as good sources of protein. It’s established fact that proteins from quality meat, fish, and dairy sources are more digestible and bio-available than from grains/cereals. This is especially true for dogs who have a shorter digestive tract than we do, pushing them much further along the carnivore scale than us humans. Lets take a look at what Pedigree Senior is made from... The packaging says With Turkey. The Australian standards for pet food manufacturing (AS 5812) says only 5% of the product has to be Turkey for this to be allowed on the packaging. That isn’t much The first (and main) ingredient of Pedigree Senior (and most Pedigree dry foods for that matter) is cereals and/or cereal by-products. If cereals aren’t bad enough, let’s take the or in that description literally. The food could be mostly cereal by-products. What are they? Dog Food Advisor states Grain industry insiders affectionately refer to this cheap and inferior waste product as floor sweepings, and likely leftovers from the human food industry. That doesn’t sound good, does it? It doesn’t sound like highly digestible protein to me? At a glance we can see the protein percentage of Pedigree Senior is 23%. That’s low. Sadly most of that protein will come from cereals, not highly digestible meat proteins. We can also guesstimate carbohydrates to be approximately 50% of the product. Given your old boy won’t be as active as he used to be most of those carbs will turn to sugars. We know how problematic sugars are for our health. So what does it mean for the health of your dog? I’ll let you ponder that but if you find your dog is becoming frail and lethargic in his later years, it might not just be old age. If you're feeding your dog Pedigree, or any similar product, take a look at the ingredients... and have a little think.
