25.01.2022 And suddenly there are a strawberries They won't win strawberry of the year but they're so sweet and delicious. #homegrown #organic #fresh #selfsufficiency #offgridliving

24.01.2022 Last year, on the 27th November 2019, I posted a picture of this sign outside our little cottage, to commemorate 4 years of DLF. We couldn't have imagined what was to come just two days later. We thought our world had ended... and yet here we are. 5 years ago today we started the dream...and today it's still very much alive...if a little crispy around the edges But we didn't achieve this alone, we survived this with your help and support and we are so very grateful Th...ank you for coming with us on this crazy dream. We've still got so much more to achieve and a lot more trees to plant. 22.01.2022 #dinner Or the makings of it anyway. It really challenges my cooking skills coming up with different meals using the same ingredients but that's the "curse" of home-growing. I'd much rather have free organic peas every day than spend money on supermarket vegetables. Right now we have a flood of sugar-snap peas, broadbeans, leeks, and leafy greens and I'm a bit over salads so I'm leaning towards something with rice or couscous #thinkingcapson #growwhatyoueat #eatwhatyougrow #organicgrowing #homegrown #selfsufficiency #fresh #organic #freefood

21.01.2022 What do you do when you see what you think is Red Clover growing wild on the side of the road? Screech to a halt, whip out the trowel you always keep handy, dig up a piece, and bring it home to plant in your wildflower meadow of course But after much googling and some knowledgeable people on the Earth Gardeners FB group, It turns out it's not Red Clover but Crimson Clover, which doesn't have the medicinal properties of the Red but is packed with vitamins so is great for sprouting and eating, and for clover tea. It's a nitrogen fixer like regular clover and a good source of feed for cattle and sheep. #crimsonclover #herbs #edibleweeds #wildflowers #selfsufficiency

20.01.2022 These gorgeous native flowers are Fringed Lily - Thysanotus Tuberosa. Each flower only lasts for one day but they are prolific bloomers, and we have patches of them popping up everywhere at the moment. The roots are actually edible but they're too small and precious for me to want to dig them up to eat so I'll just admire their beauty #australiannativeflora #fringedlily #wildflowers #nofilter

18.01.2022 It's difficult to see thanks to the glare of the sun, but we now have an avenue of ornamental pears along the outside of the north face of the new orchard. These will eventually grow to be part of the windbreak around the orchard but we've chosen deciduous blossom trees for the north side to allow the sun through in winter and to attract pollinators to help with fruiting on our edibles. And don't be put off by the awful looking soil around them. We filled the planting holes with a mix of good soils, composts and fertilisers to give them a good start. Eventually the area will be fully mulched which will help with overall soil improvement. #windbreak #ornamentals #deciduoustrees #neworchard #trees #shade #leaflitter #selfsufficiency #farmlife

16.01.2022 Spring in the bush. The regeneration of the native bushland is well underway with signs everywhere of new growth. The wildflowers are returning and the Banksia, Hakea, and grass trees are all resprouting. It'll be a while before it fully recovers but it's heartening to see the pops of nature's magick everywhere. #bushfirerecovery #landregeneration #australiannatives #bushlife

15.01.2022 Double sunshine in a pan And look at the colour The yolk colour deepens with the more greens the hens eat. #doubleyolker #nofilter #selfsufficiency #farmlife #organic #fresh #sustainable

15.01.2022 ....and speaking of clover... Check out the huge patch that's spreading throughout the old orchard. You probably can't tell from the pic but the leaves and flowers are HUGE!! No more hydrophobic soil. No more burnt soil. This stuff is like a giant bandaid on the landscape. #clover #itsmagic #soilconditioner #nitrogenfixer #soilrepair #regeneration #greenmanure #carbonsequestering

14.01.2022 We're so thrilled to welcome the sweet Niayla to the DLF team Niayla is from the USA and doing some work with bush fire recovery as part of her visa requirements. It's really spurred us on having her here and the new orchard is quickly taking shape with her help. #treeplanting #NiaylaTheAmazing #TeamDLF #farmhand #bushfirerecovery

13.01.2022 The garlic is all plaited and hanging in the pantry for storage. This should keep us going for a while. #garlic #purplemonaro #selfsufficiency #growwhatyoueat #farmlife

12.01.2022 Our truck has been bogged over by the orchard for a week and a half now, and our tractor - aka #BastardMcBastardFace, is refusing to play nicely, so it's literally just sat there and occasionally we've had a go at it with jacks and branches and all manner of attempts to free it. But then our awesome neighbour came to the rescue and pulled us out. Hooray for neighbours with tractors that just do as they're told. Thanks Jason #awesomeneighbours #farmlife #temperementaltractors

12.01.2022 Those of you have followed us for a while will know my deep connection to my bone garden which was lost in the bushfire last year. The bone garden was centred around The Mother Tree - an old, gnarled, wattle tree from which had sprung all of the other wattles around it, and it housed my bone collection. It was a place of meditation and contemplation and I spent many hours there alone. Following the fires, my sister's husband's niece (whom I've known since she was a small ...child) was so moved by our loss that she wanted to do something for us, so she commissioned her husband's uncle - Tasmanian artist Bob Smith - to paint my bone garden from one of my photographs. It's taken almost a year and a bit of coordination but how appropriate that I should be surprised with this gift just a couple of weeks out from the first anniversary of the fire. I naturally burst into tears as soon as I saw it Thank you @faith_s_j for such a beautiful and thoughtful gift. It's a poignant reminder of a place that was very special to me ~Ange~ #bonegarden #mothertree #bushfirerecovery #artworkwithmeaning #extendedfamily See more

12.01.2022 I was talking to my sister-in-law in England about our tiny native wildflowers and promised I'd take some photos..so here they are. None are any bigger than your little fingernail and most are half that size again. They're tiny, delicate things but often grow in clumps or carpet the landscape so you see vague patches of colour that I never seen to be able to really capture in a pic. My native flora identification skills are sadly lacking so if anyone can help me identify them I'd be grateful. #nativeaustralianflora #wildflowers #southerntablelands #tinyplants #braidwood #2622 #nsw

11.01.2022 I'm so excited to use our new plates, handmade by @braidwoodclayworks in gorgeous duck-egg blue. I've had so much trouble finding good sized plates with a lip to keep your gravy in place so these will do the job perfectly. Thanks Kate, I love them https://www.etsy.com/au/shop/BraidwoodClayworks #supportlocalartists #handmade #dinnerplates #keepthegravyin

11.01.2022 A quick podge around the garden after some heavy rain. Such a contrast compared to this time last year. ~Ange~ #rainydaypodge #flowers #springgarden

10.01.2022 Warm Haloumi salad with herb and garlic bread an easy Saturday dinner on what's been a very lazy day. #nofussdinner #freshgardenveg #selfsufficiency #growwhatyoueat #warmsalad #surprisinglyfilling #saturdaymood

10.01.2022 Amazingly we have a small area of Kunzea which survived the fires. It seems strange to not see the hills bathed in pink blossom as in previous years, but it's nice that some of it has prevailed. It'll be smudge stick making time again soon #kunzea #smudgestickseason #bushlife

06.01.2022 It's that time of year again when the kunzea comes out in all its glory and I can weave some magick into these smudge sticks. We only have small patches of wild kunzea left but I have enough to sustainably harvest some for a small batch. The melaleuca hasn't quite blossomed yet so these are just kunzea and eucalyptus but I'll have some others available later. A couple of weeks of drying and they'll be ready to go - some will be gifts for a few people and the rest will be available for sale soon. #smudgesticks #nativeplants #magick #sustainablyharvested #wildflowers #ritualcleansing

06.01.2022 Some see weeds, I see soil repair in action. This garden was our cottage garden which was reduced to bare ash by the fires in November. We have literally not touched it in all that time. No watering other than rain, no replanting or seed sewing, no application of any bio products. Incredibly the garden is lush and bursting with life. Some are the original plants which have resprouted, and others are pioneer plants which are flooding the soil with nitrogen fixing roots, organ...ic material and attracting beneficial insects. Many of the "weeds" are medicinal or edible but if I was to follow the recommendations and remove or herbicide them the whole garden would look like that bare strip in one of the pics - which incidentally had a woven stick fence which burned so incredibly hot it has literally baked the soil. It is however also starting to show signs of recovery. #bushfirerecovery #soilrepair #regeneration #embraceyourweeds #theydoajob #lush #green #coolstheground #holdsmoisture #selfsufficiency #offgridliving #oldcottagegarden #kisstheground #2040 #naturalsequencefarming See more

06.01.2022 Poor old Charley Cornflake has the whole run to himself while his wives are settled in cooking up a new batch of babies. He'd better enjoy the peace and quiet while he can as they're on huge clutches of eggs. #broodyhens #shesgotthelook #springtime #farmlife #chickensofinstagram

04.01.2022 It's 9.45am and already 27c with an expected top of 31 We ran out of roofing wire so we're unable to finish off the orchard roof until the new batch arrives. Meanwhile our poor fruit trees are struggling in their pots so we've made an executive decision to plant them now and just work around them. It's going to be a long, hot, day #treeplanting #stupiddegrees #summeriscoming #farmlife #selfsufficiency #fruittrees #neworchard

04.01.2022 This little Superb Fairy Wren has taken a liking to our old hop vines outside our outhouse and comes for a visit every day. I think it's a bit taken with its own reflection too. #nativeaustralianbird #superbfairywren ##creaturesofdoglegfarm

03.01.2022 The things you find at a Scouts boot fair Ye olde English book on herbs...well a page from one anyway. This will look lovely in a nice frame. #WholefomeForTheFtomacke #herbalremedies #oldenglish #oldbooks

02.01.2022 Our first garlic harvest this year We've got another patch to dig up but they all seem quite small so they can wait for another day. I'm really pleased with this haul though - 79 bulbs all up...which is a miracle given the fluctuating conditions we've had since planting. I'll trim the roots, clean off any loose soil and hang them to dry before plaiting them for storage. ~Ange~ #garlicharvest #selfsufficiency #growwhatyoueat #eatwhatyougrow #organicgrowing

02.01.2022 This was meant to be a bed full of parsnips but instead I have a field of wild poppies...not that I mind Any parsnip-growing experts out there can give me some tips? They're my favourite root vegetable and I'm determined to grow them!!! #poppiesnotparsnips #wildflowers #parsnipsarethebest #growwhatyoueat #ifonly #selfsufficiency #farmlife
