25.01.2022 So I’ve been lucky enough to gain a few more followers recently so I thought I would pop on and introduce myself again! My names Heidi, I help dog owners teach their dogs to listen in every situation so they can truly enjoy having them as part of their lives and families. I’m also a wife, Mum of 2 kids (2yo, 4yo) and we have 2 beautiful dogs (Snickers and Savvy.... Here’s 10 random facts about me- 1. I’ve been dog obsessed from a very young age In primary school I even had a weird folder that I would stick pictures of dogs in that I cut out of magazines then I would give them a name and guess their breed 3. My first job was a farm hand at an Alpaca farm 5. I hate bananas 7. We live in a caravan! We are currently travelling Australia and training dogs as we go 9. I love 90s RNB 11. I love personal growth books and podcasts 13. In high school a careers counsellor told me that dog training was a hobby not a job 15. My worst habit is going bed at 9pm, having a ‘quick look’ at my phone and then realising it’s been 3 hours 17. I was once a stable hand and also love everything about horse behaviour and training 19. I would die without my morning oat milk coffee or possibly kill someone else Feel free to message me if you have any dog related questions also open to discussing the gold that is 90s RnB
24.01.2022 Do time-outs work?
24.01.2022 Kicked my crazy dog lady level up a notch! But seriously what a privilege it is to have an old dog. His legs may not last a whole walk anymore but at least now he can still come along for the ride anyway! Loosing Bailey suddenly and way too young really makes me appreciate how amazing it is that I get to know the old version of Snickers.... His legs don’t work so well, he can barely hear, his eyesight isn’t great, he’s really grey, he’s lumpy and bumpy. and yet he’s so content and happy. He just gets on with life and makes the most of it. So today, let’s ‘be a bit more Snickers’ and look for the happy!
24.01.2022 Sunday Funday Your challenge- copy your dogs expression and share it below Heres Sarah and Montana providing some inspiration
23.01.2022 I only signed up for the Dogmanship Training Academy because I couldnt see our usual dog trainer anymore because were lockdown... well my dogs improved SO much in 4 weeks I cant even believe it! The leadership Im showing my dog has made him so more relaxed on walks, hes actually calm and happy! Leadership isnt a dirty word. A good leader gives its followers confidence & trust in them. They take the stress of decision making away. They still care about their followe...rs, they still allow them to be heard, they can still be fun and kind. Yet, people are worried about showing their dog leadership because they dont want to scare them, intimidate them or make them hate them... the thing is, thats not leadership, thats bullying. Dont confuse the two. Your dog needs a leader. If you dont lead, they will. Not only will that cause behaviour problems, its unfair to put that kind of pressure on your dog in human world. Being a leader to your dog is the kind thing to do.
21.01.2022 If your dog is pulling on the lead STOP WALKING AND START TRAINING! Is this what you think now?- I need to walk my dog for an hour to tire him out but it’s so hard because he pulls on the lead the whole time!... Here’s what I want you think- I’ve got an hour to spend with my dog 5 mins of training then 5 minutes of rest or play for that hour will tire my dog out MORE than a walk and will help me solve my problem Here’s what you need- A plan- you need to know EXACTLY what to do during those 5 minute training sessions that will get you closer to your goal. WRITE IT DOWN! Write down what your weekly goal and the steps to get you there and ONLY focus on that during your training sessions.
21.01.2022 2 or more dogs? This is your reminder to allow them to spend some time alone. Its important for their mental health. Its great to have a solid bond but being completely panicked when apart is not healthy. Its important to teach them they are safe and will cope without each other. ... Plus its important for their relationship with you.... have some one on one time!
20.01.2022 If youve been following my stories you will know that this week Snickers has been ill, in fact we nearly lost him and were still not out of the woods just yet BUT he has finally improved so were staying positive- he wont give up that easily! If youre lucky you get 10-15 years with your dog. Make it count, make it a great life for your dog, make dog ownership joyful... because sharing your life with a great dog is nothing short of incredible
19.01.2022 The best place for your dog to learn...
19.01.2022 Is this not the cutest pic?! PLUS they have a pretty amazing human too... heres what she had to say- #celebrate I must admit training two puppies has been challenging with some days going back a couple steps but in the last week we have achieved so much! Holding a sit & drop with distractions & distance, our lead pulling being reduced dramatically and a lot more loose lead while walking. However, our biggest achievement was meet today staying on their bed for 30mins with multiple distractions So happy with our progress. Heres a cute picture of our boys
19.01.2022 Stage 4 lockdown. Ouch. Thinking of everyone in Victoria. Love you guys and Im here to help you with your doggy problems throughout this time. Stay strong, stay safe
18.01.2022 Loving relationships still involve boundaries. You can love someone, be affectionate, have fun... and still have boundaries. In humans we call that a healthy relationship.... Yet, for some reason people think teaching their dogs boundaries, rules and respect will make their dog love them LESS when in fact, the opposite is true. You dont have a to be jerk, a bully or scary to enforce boundaries, BUT you do have to have them.
18.01.2022 This is why Im a dog trainer and not a chef
16.01.2022 Errors... also know as teachable moments
16.01.2022 Lets face it. Sometimes we dont train the dog because it means we have to be a learner again, which means we have to be shit at something for a while, AND show a professional how shit we are so they can help us become less shit. That can make us feel SO vulnerable. Especially if you know deep down that youve made some mistakes which is why your having problems with your dog now. ... But you know what? Weve all been there, the best dog trainers in the world started where you are now! I STILL feel vulnerable ALL the time... I post a lot of dog training related videos on social media. Every single time my finger hovers over the post button because I know that every time I put myself out there theres a chance someone will criticise me. But weve got to get over that, because the other option is to do nothing, never grow, never learn, never teach your dog... so although its hard to be vulnerable and to start something from scratch, on the other side of that is the most amazing things! I know that even if I get some haters my videos help LOADS of people and dogs every day. You need to know that even if dog training is a total disaster for you right now, being vulnerable enough to ask for help means youre going to be PROUD of your dogs behaviour and have the most epic lives together The Dogmanship Training Academy is a shame-free experience, me and everyone else in there will always cheer you on! If youre willing to go all in, well bend over backwards to get you results!
14.01.2022 Flashback I miss these days! ...But Im also glad that Snickers is living a long healthy retirement, still whipping out a few tricks here and there One day Ill get back in the ring when another dog joins our family... but for now Im busy helping others build an epic, frustration free, relationship with their dogs- and honestly, that feels like winning too!
13.01.2022 The names of the 40+ new beautiful hairy faces in the Academy for August so far Its truly an honour to have these dogs (and of course their owners) join us! Because of their owners commitment to their training theyll now have a better quality of life, theyll be less stressed, their days will be more enriched and they can be part of the family more often... so already these owners deserve a pat on the back! ... Cant wait to support you all, answer your questions and celebrate your successes! Lets get training
13.01.2022 I took a semi-break from social media, you may have noticed I wasn’t on my stories etc as much as usual... BUT one thing I’ll never take a break from is helping the incredible dog owners in the Dogmanship Training Academy! It’s my fave place on the internet. Everyone is supportive and kind to each other, you can truly be vulnerable and know you’re in a safe space. Social media can be a brutal place sometimes so I treasure the vibe we’ve built in the academy. ... PS. The semi-break was nice but I missed sharing tips and showing you what we’ve been up to! So let’s get back to it- see you in my stories
12.01.2022 New here? Hi, Im Heidi, creator of the Dogmanship Training Academy I help dogs owners teach their dogs to listen in every situation, so they can truly be part of their lives and families; without having to try to get to weekly classes regularly or buy pricey private lessons. ... 12.01.2022 Dogs who are over-reactive on walks need to know 2 things- 1You cant act like that- I wont let you bark, lunge, snap, explode and over-react.... 2You dont need to act like that- Ive got your back, you dont need to worry, were safe.
12.01.2022 You cant prepare for everything. I never thought my dogs would need to hold a sit while a line of camels walked past them on the beach What you can do is create a relationship built on leadership and trust. You can have a communication system that is transferable. ... You can train with MANY different distractions so you can teach your dog impulse control and emotional regulation. Set your dog up for success. Train them.
11.01.2022 CELEBRATE! Yes, we always celebrate our dogs when they get it right- they get toys, play, treats, freedom! We make sure they know theyve done well! BUT did you celebrate yourself? ... Did you celebrate yourself for not giving up? Did you celebrate yourself for actually putting in the hard work even if some days youre doubting you can? Did you celebrate putting yourself out there and learning something new? Did you celebrate YOU? Heres a few #celebrate posts from the Dogmanship Training Academy this week, super proud of all our academy members... dont forget you deserve some reward too
10.01.2022 I dont love my dog - said no dog owner ever. You can love your dog and still find their behaviour so frustrating youve thought about rehoming them. The thing is, if youre struggling with your dog, your dog is probably struggling with you too. ... Youre not born knowing how to train a dog. Its a learnt skill. So learn. Get professional help. You got this
10.01.2022 Expectations... If youre not clear on them, your dog cant be either. So set your expectations and stick to them so your dog is actually clear on the behaviour you want! Dont have loop holes, dont have exceptions. ... Your dog doesnt understand that its a Sunday night and you cant be bothered teaching them wait at the door for invite in, instead your dog learns that sometimes its ok to run inside like a lunatic with no repercussions... so dont expect them to differentiate between Sunday night when you cant be bothered and Monday night when youve just cleaned the floors and your elderly Grandma is trying to walk through the door. YOU CANT GET FRUSTRATED WITH YOUR DOGS BEHAVIOUR IF YOURE NOT BEING CLEAR ON THE EXPECTATIONS! So make tonights homework to sit down with everyone in your household and set clear expectations that everyone agrees on. It will make you less frustrated, it will make your dog more relaxed and it will ease so much tension in the relationship.

08.01.2022 When you listen even though theres wallabies bounding right past you, you get to play ball and wrestle
08.01.2022 Adopting a puppy is gamble... embrace it
08.01.2022 If you believe you can’t, then you can’t. If you believe your dog can’t, then they can’t. If I had a dollar for everytime someone on the street said to me ‘my dog could NEVER do that!’ I would be a millionaire! ... My dogs aren’t doing backflips while washing the dishes... they’re walking nicely on lead, they’re holding a drop while we drink a coffee at a cafe, they’re not jumping all over people etc etc. THESE THINGS ARE 100% ACHIEVABLE! Yes, you will have to be consistent. Yes, you will have to learn from a trainer. Yes, you will have put in some ground work. Yes, you can do it even if you work full time. Yes, you can do it even if you have kids around you all the time. Yes, you can do it even if your dog isn’t a puppy anymore. Yes, you can do it even if your dog is a ‘insert any breed here’ Yes, you can do it. So instead of saying ‘my dog could never do that!’ Try saying ‘I’ve not taught my dog how to do that yet!’ ... and then get training!
07.01.2022 So he doesnt do spin with the same energy and finesse as he used to but the old man still gives it his all! Such a legend Hes asleep now

06.01.2022 Fear of consequences
03.01.2022 Teaching your dog isnt optional. Youve been teaching them during every interaction youve ever had with them! So if you think you dont have time for training, think again! ... The time is there, but are you using it wisely?
03.01.2022 Should you allow your dog on the furniture? You may have been told... No, its a sign of dominance, you dont want them on your level Yes, they should be allowed, dont be mean ... Both are incorrect. If you WANT to have them on the couch thats totally fine BUT if you do decide to have them on the couch make sure its on INVITATION ONLY and they get off when requested, without an argument! That means that they need to wait to be given the command which signals that its ok to get on the couch. I say up. This changes their whole perspective. Instead of feeling like theyre entitled to being on furniture they are feeling lucky to be there! This way you can both still enjoy couch cuddles BUT its on your terms so theres no confusion about whos house it is Its a win win!
02.01.2022 FAQ- My dog is reactive to other dogs on walks, can you help? Answer- Aggression/ over-reactivity is a symptom of an underlying problem. That being said, not every dog is going to be a trustworthy social butterfly, BUT every dog should be able to walk down the street without growling/lunging/barking at other dogs going past. When working with dogs displaying aggression/over-reactivity there are two possible outcomes:... 1The dog can interact with other dogs in controlled environments. 2The dog is not reliably safe to have interactions with other dogs but can be within very close proximity on lead without being reactive. Our first goal is fix the underlying issues causing the problem... lack of consistency, lack of clear communication, lack of leadership, lack of trust, lack of impulse control, lack of emotional regulation. THEN we have the foundation we need to address the reactivity head on! FOUNDATION IS EVERYTHING If a trainer tries to ‘solve’ your dogs over-reactivity before establishing a foundation, RUN! You don’t help an alcoholic by taking them to a bar on their first therapy session!
02.01.2022 In 2018 I started the Dogmanship Training Academy as a purely online dog training program. Not because I predicted there would be a global pandemic forcing us all to learn online, but because I believe its a fantastic way to learn. Heres why- ... 1 You can watch the lessons again. Ive been in so many classes in my life and totally forgotten what the teacher said after I left or I was somehow distracted during the important part. This way you can watch it, watch it again, pause it and write notes or skip ahead! 2 Convenience. You can train at your own pace, you can train in your PJs, you can train with little kids at your feet, you can train even if you do shift work, you can train even if you dont want to commit to group classes every week, you can learn on your commute to work. 3 Support. You can ask a question whenever you want, you dont have to wait till your next lesson to talk to a trainer. Plus youve got a community of other people going through the same program as you. 4Its budget friendly. All the content and all the support at a fraction of the cost. 5It works. The results speak for themselves! The Dogmanship Training Academy isnt something I whipped up just to get you through the lockdown... its a complete training system all on its own! See you on the inside!
02.01.2022 Discipline. Im not talking about dogs. Im talking about owners. Lets face it- ... we dont always feel motivated we dont always feel inspired we dont always feel driven to make change Thats fine, you dont have to be trying to teach your dog something new everyday. You DO have to maintain the things youve already started working on. Otherwise your dog is going to be getting inconsistent messages. Its a recipe for anxiety when you change your rules and expectations for your dogs daily! They never know what to expect! One day theyre not allowed on the couch and then the next day you cant be bothered to do anything about so theyre allowed up... how stressful for your dog to have the person youre living with constantly change their mind about the expectations! Be disciplined. Stick to it even when you cant be bothered. It WILL pay off. You cant build new habits for your dog in a day but if youre disciplined enough to stay consistent they will be built.
02.01.2022 Train for relationship
02.01.2022 Is it really separation anxiety? Or is it actually just attention seeking behaviours that have been unintentionally reinforced. Cute 8 week old puppy arrives home... you put them outside and shut the door. Puppy cries and scratches at the door. ... Puppy looks sad and adorable so you go and let puppy back in. Fast forward and now that cute puppy is 6 months old. The cries at the back door are now really loud and annoying and your back door is being ruined- its not so cute and adorable anymore. So you try to ignore the behaviour in hope that theyll stop. BUT the dog gets louder and starts jumping more forcefully on the door or chewing at it. You think This is just making it worse! And let him back in. The problem here is now pup has learnt if they want to get back in they just have to keep going, be more persistent and eventually someone lets me in. But youre thinking hes got the worst separation anxiety EVER! No, he doesnt want to be separated, most dogs love to be with their family- but the extreme barking, whining, jumping, scratching at the door is a learnt behaviour. You have taught your dog that behaviour is how they get what they want! Can it be reversed? In majority of cases- Hell yes! But it takes you being 100% consistent and persistent! This behaviour is now a habit, so we need to rebuild the habit loop and make it SO clear to the dog that waiting patiently is now the thing that gets you attention... barking, scratching, jumping, whining no longer works... in fact it gets you ignored or a correction. It MUST be done in conjunction with an entire training plan so were changing the dogs overall mindset- we want them to feel as confident, happy and as relaxed as their genetics will allow them. Separation anxiety does exist- but its not nearly as common as were lead to believe!
01.01.2022 So grateful that I get to work with the most amazing, positive, dedicated clients! They say if you love what you do you never work a day in your life... and boy do I love what I do!
01.01.2022 My family is everything. My dogs are family. Put quite simply, THAT is why you should train them. A trained dog gets to be a big part of your life because theyre not a pain in the ass to have around. ... So what are you waiting for? Lets do it! #startTODAY
