25.01.2022 What can you expect when you purchase a puppy from a Dogs Victoria registered breeder? A breeder who is passionate about preserving the unique heritage of their chosen breed. A breeder who has spent countless hours learning about their breed and who will be happy to share their knowledge and provide ongoing support throughout your puppy’s life, not just at the time of purchase.... A breeder who aims to produce healthy, happy puppies through careful selection of breeding stock, comprehensive health testing, and screening for known breed conditions. A breeder who has agreed to abide by Dogs Victoria’s code of ethics, rules and regulations as well as meeting or exceeding all other requirements under Victorian state legislation.
25.01.2022 THE AUSTRALIAN KELPIE The Kelpie was developed during the 19th century as a breed able to work sheep on the vast outback properties under harsh and variable conditions. Their hardiness and ability to work long hours makes the Kelpie invaluable for the farmers, and they have been exported to many countries overseas where they have been used for managing a variety of stock. However, their hard work does not disguise their cheeky personality.... Share a picture of your Kelpie below. Read more about the Australian Kelpie in our January Magazine

21.01.2022 It was exciting to see the Park open again so members can socialise and exercise their dogs. Opening Hours: 8am - 5pm daily. We are keenly awaiting the Minister to approve our Application Of Covid-19 Roadmap And Health Directions, sent on 11 November 2020 so we can increase activities. Grounds works continued with further cutting of the grass. Thank you for keeping clear of the areas when works are being undertaken.... A major milestone for Dogs Victoria with our new Fire Service which has now been successfully connected to the water main. The main lines and hydrants are now installed and live, so members should not activate or tamper with any Fire Hydrants. The water is under high pressure and dangerous, and is only to be used for firefighting purposes. This project however is not yet fully completed. Concrete pads will be built around each hydrant Red Fire Boxes and hose reals to be installed. Some Top dressing and tidy up will complete the project over the next few weeks. Minor plumbing works have also been completed, with new guttering installed on the portable building, and new secure drain covers outside the Boxhall Pavilion. 18.01.2022 Producing Happy Puppies Did you know temperament and behaviour are highly heritable? In fact, it was differences in behaviour and abilities that lead to the development of breeds as we know them today. Selection of breeding stock with stable, happy temperaments is the first step towards rearing puppies that make great family pets. But it does not stop there. ... Behavioural research has identified critical developmental periods early in a puppy's life that can also impact their adult temperament. Good breeders work hard to make sure that all of the puppies in their litters have the best chances of success in life by providing them with learning opportunities and positive experiences almost from the minute they are born. A Dogs Victoria Breeder will be happy to discuss: The expected temperament of their breed energy levels, instincts, innate behaviours and trainability How they select their breeding stock for temperament and will be keen for you to meet the mother of the litter, along with any other adults they may own What kind of handling and socialisation each puppy will receive prior to leaving for their new home How they match each puppy’s temperament to their potential homes and families How you can continue the work they have started once your puppy transitions into your home

17.01.2022 THE KOMONDOR The breed is descended from Tibetan dogs and was brought to Hungary during the 12th and 13th centuries by nomadic people forced westward by the Mongols. The breed has been declared one of Hungary’s national treasures. Their purpose was to guard livestock and property. The Komodor has the heaviest amount of fur in the canine world, puppies have a coat that is soft and fluffy, but as the dog matures, the undercoat and coarse outer coat combine to form cords.
17.01.2022 Often we treat our dog like a human; however, there are a few foods you should avoid giving to your dog as they can cause serious health problems. Similar to cooking for humans, a dog's diet should be broken up into protein, vegetables and starch. Your vet can provide detailed information on the perfect balance for your dog. Read about toxic foods your dog should avoid in our September issue of Dogs Victoria Magazine: https://bit.ly/35HL7Mu

13.01.2022 MEET THE PARENTS Never purchase a puppy online or without seeing where your puppy is coming from. Puppy farmers (who keep and breed animals in often appalling conditions) and puppy scammers (who take money for puppies that do not exist) rely on impulsive purchasers who simply want a puppy at any cost. By meeting the mother of your puppy, you will get to see the conditions in which the mother and pups are kept, and you will also get to see her interacting with her puppies. T...emperament and behaviour are highly heritable, so meeting the mother of your puppy, (and if possible, the father) will give you a good idea of how your puppy is likely to look and behave as an adult. Good breeders will want to meet you and will be happy to arrange a time for a visit. If you cannot visit in person, you should be able to arrange a video call with your breeder (easy these days via Facetime, Whatsapp or Messenger). That way, they can show you their breeding set up, and you can see the litter and its mother, as well as have any questions you may have answered.

13.01.2022 Purebred Equals Predictable All puppies are cute and adorable. Their comical antics and wiggly tails are so hard to resist. However, before you commit to a new puppy (or even an adult dog), you need to do your research properly. You want your new pet to have a long, happy and healthy life, and to become part of the family. Although you may be attracted to how a puppy looks, you need to make sure you are ready for what that cute puppy will grow into.... Shelters and pounds are full of dogs that have been surrendered because the adult dog was a poor match for the owner’s situation. Finding a breed that suits your lifestyle, activity level, and expectations can take a little time, but it increases the likelihood that your new friend will be your perfect match! By selecting a pedigree purebred puppy, you will have the advantage of: Knowing exactly how big your puppy is expected to grow Knowing what sort of coat type and texture your adult dog will have Being able to predict the temperament, activity levels and instincts that your adult dog will display Having a breeder that will be keen to make sure that you are making the right choice, and who will be there to support and guide you as your puppy grows

11.01.2022 THE AUSTRALIAN CATTLE DOG The Australian Cattle Dog, also known as the Blue or Red Heeler or the Queensland Heeler, was developed in the 19th century as a working dog to suit Australia’s harsh climate.
