25.01.2022 Consequences create awareness of the possibility of further consequences. They cause us, and our dogs to make different decisions, and take different actions. I...f this concept is utilized at the top of the walk, the chances of a very different experience is increased tremendously. And the absence of this concept in the dog world, means speeding is tacitly endorsed. ;)
24.01.2022 Dog Savvy Xmas Party at Whiteman Park
24.01.2022 Sunday was our last training day in Bassendean. What a year - so disruptive for training and it was great to see everyone come back after lockdown. Wishing you all a great Christmas break and fun time with your family and furry friends.
23.01.2022 BOORAGOON 8 WEEK COURSES - 2021 Saturday 6 March to 1 May (not 3 April) at 4pm (1 hour) Saturday 31 July to 18 September at 4pm (1 hour) Training is held at Piney Lakes Reserve and Pawsome Dog Daycare. The last week will be a café visit to put all the training into practice in real life.... Cost: $595.00 (maximum of six dogs) (3 SPOTS REMAINING) A very popular course for pet dog owners wanting to learn obedience and good manner training under distraction. An exciting alternative to food based training. Having a well mannered dog is a dream for a lot of people. When you got your sweet, cute puppy your heart melted but, for so many owners, so did your ability to be in control. Waiting for the puppy to 'grow out' of naughty behaviour wont happen either. Has your puppy turned into that uncontrollable dog? Let me help you regain control have a dog that listens to you under distraction; help you set boundaries around the home so your dog understands the house rules; take control of your walks and make them enjoyable and not a chore. Let me help you gain a reliable dog you can take anywhere; a well mannered dog you are proud to own; your dog will want to be with you trust and respect you; a dog who knows how to behave even though they are not in an obedience command. The training will help you gain leadership, respect, communication and impulse control. If you wish to enrol please contact me for an enrolment form: June Page 0407 472 994; Email [email protected]. Class is limited to six dogs (confirmation of place is upon return of completed enrolment form and deposit of $50).
22.01.2022 When FREE is more than a free. Free is your dog's reward when they just did what you asked them to do. Free is you teaching your dog that you are the best thi...ng ever for them, and the most important thing in their life. We always encourage Serenity Members to say FREE with lots of genuine happiness and joy in your tone and pair it with pats, cuddles, affection. It's love wrapped into one genuine moment. This is Quinn and his dad's first session. It's all very new to them and both are still learning. We are certain that soon enough, Quinn's dad will master the contrast in his tones including the FREEEEEE!!!!!!!
22.01.2022 Our beginners class starts teaching their dogs to listen to them under the distraction of food. Getting the trust and respect of their dogs is the ultimate goal. Choosing their owner over a lovely tasty sausage is a start!!!!
22.01.2022 Our combined 2/3 class is improving weekly. The dogs are doing so well especially those that are a bit reactive - learning to trust their owners and not react whenever another dog goes by.
22.01.2022 BASSENDEAN CLASSES 2021 FREE INFORMATION SESSION / BEGINNERS FUNDAMENTAL COURSE SUNDAY, 7 FEBRUARY AT 10.00 am (FULL) SUNDAY, 21 MARCH AT 10.00 am (7 places remaining) SUNDAY, 16 MAY AT 10.30 am... SUNDAY, 27 JUNE AT 10.30 am Our Fundamental Course runs for 10 weeks. This phase of training teaches your dog to respond to new commands and signals that are to become part of its daily existence. Using obedience and good manner exercises, owners create a line of communication with their dog that teaches it to listen, respect, self-control and want to be with you. Wouldn’t it be great if your dog listened and responded to you, regardless of distraction imagine no more jumping, barking, nipping the kids, barging through doors and gates, keeping off the couch, pulling on the lead. Wouldn’t it be lovely to have a dog that was calm under distraction, knew not to jump, waiting calmly to be invited through the door, onto the couch etc. Listened to you all the time. Members graduating from our Fundamental class have the option to continue on with their training. We offer Level 2 Putting it all together. We run classes from beginners to off lead. Members can progress through the training at their own pace and go to the level they are happy with. Membership - $100 Lifetime membership for your dog (includes training halter) - $25 per class Level 1 - Fundamental class (10 weeks) (First class free) Level 2 Putting it all together (10 weeks) Level 3 & 4 Progression back to flat collar and then off lead Ongoing classes
22.01.2022 Everyone wants their dog to be happy. Everyone wants their dog to love them. The problem is that often we think we can create those things from affectio...n, treats and premium dog products alone. It doesn’t work that way. Of course your dog can have treats and cuddles and special toys BUT if you’re not also providing leadership through a consistent communication system your dog just won’t be able to be the best version of themselves. And that’s the goal. For you and your dog to enjoy each other and be the best versions of yourselves #dogmanshiptraining #jointhedogmanshiptrainingacademy #reallifedogtraining
21.01.2022 Last training day for the beginners class. We had some fun with ball and spoon; keeping their dog's attention even though they had a treat in their hand; and keeping their dog's attention when passing other dogs and distraction. Well done everyone - hope to see you next year.
21.01.2022 It was sausage Sunday at Bassendean. Our dogs choosing to listen to our tones and leave the sausages. With Christmas coming up wouldnt it be great if you coul...d confidently leave your dog around the nibbles on the coffee table and they are still there when you come back. Even our labrador Billy showing no interest. Those little dots near the dogs feet are sausage pieces. See more
21.01.2022 The beginners class is working on their sit step away. Their dogs are learning to stay in position no matter what until their are either freed off or given another command - a solid sit.
20.01.2022 REMINDER TO BASSENDEAN CLASSES: This Sunday we change to summer time training - all classes start half an hour earlier. Just in time as its going to be hot on Sunday so bring yourself some water. We supply water for the dogs. Dont be late!
19.01.2022 We held our free beginners info session and again had a full class. This is our last intake for the year. Welcome to you all. Hope you enjoyed the day and are ready to start next week. Here are a few photos of the session.
19.01.2022 We focused on duration in the off lead class doing our sits for one minute, drop for ten minutes. We also tried recall with the owners squatting down and calling their dogs - an interesting result with Gordon and Ann. Gordon seems to need extra stopping and turning space!!
19.01.2022 Lovely morning at Whiteman Park. Beware of kangaroos as you drive in. See you here. We walk at 8.30 so be here 10 mins before.
19.01.2022 BASSENDEAN CLASSES A reminder that this Sunday we are having a fun day. There will be several obstacle courses set up for you to challenge your dog but also have a lot of fun. Level 4 & 5 - 8.00 am... All over levels - 9.15am Fingers cross the weather is kind to us. See you there
18.01.2022 The off lead class practised some commands on the move and up close and personal heel work.
17.01.2022 Our level 4 class is working to go off lead. They are using their tones to control their dog and not their lead and getting distance on their drop step aways with distractions going on around them. If you can do that you are getting close to going off lead. Well done to you all.
17.01.2022 We had fun on Friday nights running Hoopers courses. Participants can put into practice what they have learnt.
17.01.2022 The doggos are running courses at hoopers at the moment. We were certainly challenged finding our way around and having the dogs really listening as the hoops ...and barrels were close together and they had to ignore one and go through the other - really made us realise we need to 'use our words' - the correct ones work better! 17.01.2022 THIS IS A PSA Puppies bite. They bite a lot. They bite hard. Their teeth are sharp. You might bleed. It might seem relentless. Scaring the pants off them by ye...lling, pinning, shoving or shouting will not only do precisely zero, it will potentially create a fearful adult dog. Puppies bite more when; They are tired They are hungry They are bored They are overstimulated They are teething Read that again. They bite MORE when they are the above. They will also bite when they are absolutely fine. They are dogs not dolls. Be compassionate not scary. They will grow out of it but only if you teach them a good alternative. Trade for toys. Use a pen or a crate. Teach calmness. Reward gentle interactions. Grit your own teeth and ride it out while reinforcing good stuff and proactively managing bad stuff. Be proactive when you know biting happens like after some play, when excitement goes up, when they are overtired (7-9pm witching hour anyone?) and give them a good chew or help them settle, or channel that energy into some training. It does get better basically. Don’t panic. Most puppy biting isn’t aggression. Be CONSISTENT and PROACTIVE and expect more than a few bites along the way. Signed, Aalto the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (aka the ginger shark)
16.01.2022 Please never be offended if someone says no when you ask to pet their dog. They are thinking of their dogs and your wellbeing #berespectful #mannersmatter #dogtraining

14.01.2022 Everyone enjoyed it so much last time we did 'bouncing balls' recalls again. Talk about distractions. Some of the dogs are very ball motivated but not one stopped and grabbed a ball - and there were lots of them. Love seeing these guys work.

09.01.2022 The beginners class were shown 'on the mat'. A great exercise to perfect as it is useful in so many ways. When doing on the mat the dogs learn self-control, how to moderate their reactions and relax especially when done for a long duration.
09.01.2022 The challenge for this class was to have their dogs listen to them and ignore Ann trying her hardest to distract them. There were huge temptations but what a great job.
09.01.2022 We were very lucky with the weather for our Dog Savvy Christmas party at Whiteman Park this morning. We managed to have our walk and sausage sizzle without get...ting wet. It was a great day and always lovely to catch up and have a chat with members. Thanks to everyone for your support this year and looking forward to seeing you all next year. See more
09.01.2022 The three amigos gained the level 3 titles in hoopers on Thursday night. So proud of this lot. We ask so much and they try so hard and we all have lots of fun. And no we dont normally run barefoot to feel the grass between our toes - Ann forgot her shoes!!!!
08.01.2022 It was Henry's and his brother Goose's (who unfortunately couldnt make training) big 2nd birthday and they brought pup cakes.
07.01.2022 BASSENDEAN CLASSES Because of 100% rain forecast (possibly heavy) tomorrow's fun day is cancelled. Stay home and say dry.
07.01.2022 Working up close with other dogs can challenge some dogs. They need to trust their owners. We also worked on recall.
07.01.2022 This is an X-ray of a 2 week old puppy, it really shows how far the bones have to grow before they become a proper joint! Puppy exercise is sooo importan...t as young dogs undergo significant physical changes. Most growth takes place between the ages of 4 to 8 months however, in some large/giant dog breeds the growth plates may remain open up to 18-20 months! There is no question that puppies LOVE to exercise & we want nothing more than to make them happy BUT puppy exercise limits MUST be applied to prevent damage to the puppy’s developing skeletal system. So here’s a guide to help; Over-training, such as long-distance running, is unhealthy for young dogs and the benefits are minimal. Some dogs are driven to exercise and, as owners, we feel we are doing them a service by giving them what they want... So... what is enough? Appropriate Puppy Exercise 0-6mths Walking slow, short walks up to 30 mins, with plenty of opportunities for your puppy to stop & sniff sniff sniff Formal skills training sit, stay, down, touch no more than 2 mins per session. Free play no more than 10 mins; discourage rough play, such as body slamming. Chasing objects roll balls and drag toys along the ground. Avoid repetitive ball throwing & chasing. Tugging do not pull against the dog hold the toy and let the puppy pull against you; keep the toy low, to maintain the puppy’s neck in a straight line with its back. Avoid direct running , jumping, indoor/outdoor stairs, fast turns, sudden stops like chasing a ball! Young puppies, up to six months, should not be exercised with the intent to increase strength or endurance. These puppies should be allowed to play naturally, i.e. self-directed play. Jumping is often encouraged, with little understanding of the damage it can cause a young pup. Do not allow your puppy up on high objects without good supervision and assist them when getting down. We hope you share this with all your friends, students & puppy owners - Let’s spread the word and make positive changes
04.01.2022 Gordon, Nikki and Beau are having a great time at hoopers. They are getting more confident at going ahead of us and getting distance. We have a lot of fun
04.01.2022 RIP Cosmos The Fearless 8.2.2002 - 26.11.2020 Had to say goodbye to Cosmos today. She has been with us for nearly 19 years. She taught my last five dogs and ...also other dogs how to respect cats. A very large personality and had the ability to stand her ground and terrorise dogs. You have now joined Rosie, Wizard, Jessie and Shar - you were the last of that era. You will be greatly missed See more
03.01.2022 We only have one more training session on Sunday 6 December. So hard to believe. What a year its been. If you have any problems you would like us to run through on the day let us know. Our Christmas party is on Sunday 13 December at Whiteman Park. See separate post. If you are unable to make training but would like to attend the walk and Christmas party let me know. It is free for all members. We have a sausage sizzle and gifts for the dogs. Also see separate post for our commencement dates for 2021. I am taking bookings for our next free info / beginners class on Sunday 7 February in Bassendean. Class is already half full.
01.01.2022 Our off lead class is now using the car boundary to leave their dog in the car with the door open when they arrive at training. Lovely Henry nails it.
