06.01.2022 **** Update No. 2 Leptospirosis Inner city Sydney **** Eastern suburbs vets convened a meeting last week to discuss the current situation regarding leptospirosi...s in dogs in the inner city of Sydney. We discussed the cases that have occurred to present and also recommendations we thought applicable. A research project currently being undertaken by a specialist at Sydney Uni Veterinary Faculty on the prevalence of the leptospira bacteria in dogs and cats in Sydney was presented and discussed as well. Following this discussion and in communication with other experts including a conservation biologist about the population and movement of rat species in the inner city the following recommendation was concluded: ** Dogs within a 3km radius of Surry Hills should be vaccinated for Leptospira. Initial vaccination includes a primary vaccine, followed by a booster 2-4 weeks later. This would then need to be boosted annually if continued cover is desired. ** Dogs outside this area but that go into this area regularly would also be considered to be at risk and should be considered for vaccination. If you are unsure about whether to vaccinate your dog please don’t hesitate to contact us and we’ll discuss it with you. I have attached a map that describes the 3km radius around Surry Hills (inner circle) and also a 5km radius (outer circle). Please see the previous posts about how the disease is spread and risks for getting the disease. Not every dog that lives within this 3km radius of Surry Hills is at risk but due to the confinement of cases to this area we feel it is appropriate to vaccinate all dogs in this area unless their individual risk is extremely low. At this time we don’t yet know the full extent of spread of this bacteria or disease and over the next few months hopefully we will better get to understand this. In northern areas of Australia and some areas overseas this vaccine is considered core and given annually as part of these core vaccines. We are yet to recommend this in our area as we know that for years this organism has been endemic and incidence of infection has been low. We may change these recommendations base on the outcome of this study and other information.
