25.01.2022 Our very first in person puppy graduates in just on a year. Happy dance. It is nice to be back :-).

21.01.2022 These tugs would make great training toys. For any of you that we encourage to use training toys these would be a good choice.

20.01.2022 Don't give your dog these. Much better options are natural, additive free locally produced chews. We do not give our dogs rawhide products.

16.01.2022 **Update on our services** Kilmore manners classes return Monday. Emails were sent. Let us know if we missed you. It has been crazy here. Thomastown manners classes, grumpy programs and puppy social sessions hoping to resume very shortly. Currently waiting for venue confirmation. ... Grumpys and puppies you will see me very soon as promised. Puppy Preschool classes (ALL) will continue to operate online with the content delivered in zoom sessions and social sessions provided 1 hour per week. We will not resume our regular program until we can return to indoor lessons. We feel 2 hours in some weather conditions is not condusive to best care for puppies. Kilmore puppy socials are operational. In person behaviour consultations. These are operational - we have very few appointments left for the remainder of the year. If you need one please let us know ASAP. We will be closing at the start of December as normal. Thank you to everyone for your patience and understanding. In 2021 we will be extending our services to offer more classes with a bigger team of trainers.

14.01.2022 When we think of cues most people think of verbal cues like "sit" but did you know cues can be: *sounds (words, whistles, finger snaps etc), *visuals (hand signals, body movements, presentation of an item etc), *environmental (happens in certain locations such as being at the dog school), *particular situations (such as a guide dog wearing a harness or a seizure alert dog responding to the handlers chemical changes) and *scents (all different kinds).... The samples pictured are to start programs with dogs who hassle cats. #cues #dogsolutions #scent #scentcue #dogsandcats

03.01.2022 I know many of our clients have horses so I thought these very cool lick mats for horse enrichment may be of interest. I just ordered two :-).

03.01.2022 Hey guys Just letting everyone know that all our classes, puppy school places and private appointments are fully booked for 2020. To those I have promised to do things with who do not have appointments I will be cutting slightly into my break - you will be hearing from me. You will be getting your session as promised.... 2021 classes will be added to the system after Christmas. I am holding off waiting to see what restrictions we may face closer to the dates. Noseworks and Grumpy will be operating at full capacity for those who have been waiting. We are aleady booking private consults for 2021. The photo is gorgeous Kimiko who is one of my puppy private clients. She has discovered laying in mums hammock is just dreamy. Isn't she gorgeous?

02.01.2022 *** Myth Buster Monday *** Today's myth "When my dog is doing something wrong I tell him in a firm voice "No" to stop it" . That's what we used to do - when we didn't know better. Now we know so much more about how dogs learn, the best ways to teach them and the fallout from training that is combative rather than team building.... So what do we do when we see the dog doing something we don't want them to do? Things like raiding the bin, peeing on the carpet, counter surfing, stealing, jumping up and the list goes on - any behaviour you don't want to see repeated! If we see the dog in the act of the behaviour we interrupt by cuing an incompatible behaviour. If the dog has learned some behaviours reliably, we direct to perform the desirable task. For example, if the dog is about to steal the donut off the bench we cue "on your bed" and we reward that behaviour. The donut theft and the going to the bed behaviours cannot be performed at the same time. We make the desirable behaviour the one that brings predictable good outcomes for the dog. We make that behaviour strong. If the dog has yet to learn some skills we implement management to prevent the behaviour, work to build strong reliable tasks that we can cue and we build a strong training history that the dog associates with positive outcomes for them. We all like wins. A certain type of trainer tells all who will listen that modern training is permissive. That dogs run amok. No they don't. We train smart. We motivate the learner. We create willing participants. Willing participants learn faster and enjoy the human/dog relationship. Most importantly if the dog has a solid history of reinforcement, they learn to offer the desirable behaviours un-cued if we are consistent. I no longer use the word "no". I focus on clear direction. I use verbs like "down". The words I use give the dog an alternate option that will please me. My dog can't run out the front door if I send them to their mat. I will interrupt in an emergency with a dog who lacks training history, but I won't go mad and I won't yell words with no actual meaning to the dog. I will make a novel (not angry) sound and/or offer an activity to redirect the dog. Building a team is about trust and guidance, not nagging or bullying. Dogs give up if they can't work out what you want. Guide them. It happens faster. We all know someone who nags us or thinks we are mind readers (gulp guilty). I tune out to that. Your dog will too. In the worst scenarios where dogs respond due to fear, we limit their potential. I am a crossover trainer. I know both ways. My ideology and methodology are based around my knowledge and experience as a behaviour consultant. You get bare minimum from a dog afraid to be punished. Task only, nothing more. "Doing words folks". Don't make yourself a background noise. Make your words count. #dogsolutions #behaviourconsultant #moderntraining #mythbuster #mythbustermonday #trainsmart #makeitcount

01.01.2022 Be kind to your Vets, Vet nurses and all the staff working to care for your pets. I know a large number of these people personally and professionally - they care about your pets and you. Please understand that care roles can carry enormous stress and strain. Its not over at the end of a shift. Its not easy to let the days stress go. Be kind. What we say and do can heal or harm. ... #loveyourvet #nomv #dogsolutions #kindnessmatters
