24.01.2022 My oldest and dearest friend Fumie who I went to school with, is hand picking vintage kimonos for us in Japan. She and other friends replace the whole neck line collar pieces and sew new ones back on by hand. Did you know that all those kimonos are made by hand? Every stitch is hand sewn beautifully. My mum used to make kimonos a long time ago. When they are washed, she used to unpick every stitch to remove the collar and wash and then stitch it back on again. Can you beli...eve that slow process? We will have some more pieces online soon. https://dogstar.com.au/search?q=mask See more
24.01.2022 STRIPE OR PLAIN? After receiving so much love for our very popular MIMIC and HAMON PANTS, I have been asked to make more this coming season. What do you think of STRIPES for spring/summer? I love the STRIPES for a change and especially love the way the STRIPES go in all different directions.... I think this is a cool casual pants... Do you like STRIPES, plain or other patterns or colours? See more
23.01.2022 DECONSTRUCTION OF JAPANESE KIMONO There are so many beautiful things in Japan. Some are new and some are old. Although, those old things are often left unused, as if they have been asleep for a long time. In the last few years, I have been revisiting Japan and the culture. Many of those beautiful things are not as recognized or used in Japan. I have been thinking how we can repurpose them here in Australia. Not many Australian women may wear Kimono as is. But what if the objects are deconstructed and reworked as contemporary pieces? Do you agree with the deconstruction of those beautiful vintage things or keep them as is? What are your thoughts? https://dogstar.com.au//vint/vintage+kimono+vintage-kimono

21.01.2022 LOCAL ARTIST WANTED Last year we collaborated with the very talented artist, Kerri Hobba. Did you love Kerri's artistic touch on dogstar as much as we did? ... This coming season, we are looking for the next artist to do a collaboration with us. We would love to support our community by working with a local upcoming artist. Please recommend any local artists who you would love to see collaborate with us. Send us the local artist of your choice in the comment below, making sure to include their social media tags (Facebook and Instagram) for us to check out. Students and artists without an online presence are welcome to submit examples of their work via messenger.

18.01.2022 WISH YOU WELL ASA NO HA leaf print represents the hemp leaf in Japan and has been used for many many years. Traditionally it was commonly used for a new born baby and wishes them good health and strong growth just like hemp plants. I created this block print a few years ago and it has been very popular. This is the very end of the fabric that I have kept it for something special. ... I have now decided to cut the last of it all into face masks. I hope you all stay safe and overcome this tough time. https://dogstar.com.au/collections/new-arrivals/new-arrivals
18.01.2022 This is one of my grandmas brooms that she made out of dry branches and she used to use it for such a long time. I never noticed this broom until recently. But for as long as I remember she used it when cleaning our garden and front door area. I found it when I was in Japan last year when I was cleaning our garage. I cant believe I never even noticed that she made this and used it for her much of her life. Only now I can finally see the beauty of it. She used to make pretty much everything or barter with our neighbours. It is a beautiful thing and I wish I could follow her mind. We are so used to convenience and the speed of getting new things. After finding this photo today it made me think - I need to sweep my entrance and clean my garden.
18.01.2022 I have known Mr Tuan and Trung for a long time before I started dogstar 20 years ago. They have been dogstar clothing since the beginning. dogstar garments are not easy to make. It often takes time for them to understand how to construct the pieces. Over the last 20 years that we have been working together, they became like my family. Their children have grown up over time. To me it is their hands that created and supported dogstar. Each garment has been carefully made by them and finished beautifully, their thoughts were sewn with each stitch. I just wanted to introduce the creators behind the beautiful dogstar pieces. https://dogstar.com.au/collections/new-arrivals/new-arrivals
17.01.2022 It is often hard to express things about my culture. It's beautiful, but can be hard to break into. Things that I think are beautiful may not seem the same to you. And also things that I would like to hide, can be attractive to others. This is going to be a very interesting experience for me to create a collection using Japanese elements. Here is the first sneak peak of my spring collection. ... My long time friend and amazing creator - Tiffany, will come up with something unique as a part of the dogstar collection. 17.01.2022 dogstar SIGNATURE In Japan, we use a signature stamp/seal instead of writing our signature. Signature stamp has been a part of Japanese culture for a long time. It is actually coming from Westen culture instead of China. There are so many different kinds of stamps for different purposes in Japan, we mainly use round stamps and square types. ... Here at dogstar I have developed this embroidery of our signature stamp. I created this one recently, combined with two different Chinese characters. DOG and STAR! It's simple but I would love to know what you think of this new signature? Proudly made in Brisbane! https://dogstar.com.au/collections/sale
17.01.2022 KAPPO PANTS Of stripes and stories...our new Kappo Pants hold a special place for both. They are modelled on the Monpe Pant, which is a traditional Japanese work-pant for women. We've modernized the cut to play with stripes and shape, but the sense of nostalgia and history remains. At the same time the fabric evokes the colour palette of Australia, with red dirt, ochre, and black starry skies. Something of Japan and something of Australia... a sort of accidental fusion. In 1...00% linen, the Kappo Pant will texturize and soften to your shape as you wear them ~ there is room for your story as well. Let us know what you think? 16.01.2022 KIMONO IN DOGSTAR? Can you imagine dogstar with KIMONO? I have been thinking a lot about my hometown since the pandemic started and would like to seek more of the beauty of Japan and my hometown this year. Not just beauty, but many elements and their origins and meaning are appearing throughout my collection. ... There are so many things that I don't even know about my culture. 15.01.2022 Miko, the Shrine Maiden Have you seen Spirited Away by Hayao Miyazaki? It is one of my all time favourite stories by studio Ghibli. The main character is Sen/Chihiro, is a young girl who journeys to a bathhouse in the spirit realm, where she encounters many kami (spirits) from folklore and myth. ... She reminds me of a Miko, a traditional shrine-maiden in the Shinto religion. The Kanji (Japanese characters) for Miko is a composition of 'shaman' and 'female', and the role was originally one of a medium to the spirit world, a revered position including spirit possession, dream communication, and trance-like ceremonies. Times have changed, but I feel a sense of the Miko in this styling. The wide pants, kimono and the strong feminine energy of the look are all reminiscent of Miko and of Sen/Chihiro. I would love to hear if you have seen Spirited Away, and what your impressions were? https://dogstar.com.au/search?q=tsubaki+pants Follow us on Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/dogstarclothing/?hl=en
14.01.2022 In Japan circle is often used in our culture. Its strongly related to Zen. Its a simple line but these is depth to it. Circle - "En" could describe earth, wind, sky, ground.. It is forbidden to describe the limitation of zen's enlightenment in writing or with images, and is difficult to indicate what "En" means In zen's world,... "En" means Zen's heart . In the circle everything connects together. Often people see our life as a straight line. in Zen's world, life is a circle. There is no starting nor ending point. It means any time can be a starting point. This thought can have a great impact on ones life. https://dogstar.com.au/collections/new-arrivals/new-arrivals

13.01.2022 On the weekend, my friend Paola Milani and I went to experience pottery making! This was my first experience on the wheel and OMG... it was so much fun! 13.01.2022 It's nearly the end of term in school, do you feel so busy with family and work? I definitely do.... I feel like I am a taxi driver and a servant with no pay at the moment... This week I dropped my children at school because we are so late to get ready for school and work. My children don't even say thank you to me at drop off. 12.01.2022 UP CYCLING MEMORIES Over the past 20 years my customers have been looking after our dogstar garments so well. Many of them tell me their stories of their travels, or special occasions that they experienced while wearing dogstar pieces. I sometimes have the opportunity to mend, and up cycle them. ... Here is one of our tunics that we made a long time ago and it has been adored for years. My customer loved this tunic because she traveled Europe with it and it holds so many wonderful memories. I made this into an apron so that it won't have too much tension on the light weight silk cotton anymore. I added a new tunic underneath. I am happy how it turned out. I hope my customer can wear this for another 10 years! If you have our old clothes sitting in your wardrobe and you can't let them go, challenge me and see what I can do!

07.01.2022 Suddenly it feels like spring here in Brisbane. I have been non active in the last few months, but did some gardening last Sunday! Many of my plants were overgrown in pots during winter and looked sad. I had to propagate and re pot many of my plants! Working with plants and soil is the best feeling and I love the smell of dirt! I really love it so much! The plants look so good, but I now have so many of the same plants... What do you think about swapping some of your plant...s for mine? 07.01.2022 HOW MANY LEGS IN THIS SPIDER? Those spiders have extra legs and can do things that we can't do. They can dance and skip into a magical space that we have never been before. 06.01.2022 I have been working on these pants for quite a while now. They have been constructed with a combination of six different pants patterns that have been tucked and twisted to create a shape like MONPE (Japanese old working pants). These TSUBAKI PANTS were designed to style with vintage KIMONO from Japan and also to go well with summer sandals. Instead of wearing with Japanese traditional GETA (old shoes) I coordinated with TRIPPEN's sandals for this collection. ... It has a bit of Japanese feel but more contemporary. Isn't it beautiful? I got these beautiful sandals from ICON FOOTWEAR in Hobart. It's not too traditional but still has a hint of Japan. What do you think of this style? https://dogstar.com.au/collections/new-arrivals/new-arrivals
06.01.2022 Each little shibori shapes on this neck piece are made by hand. It takes a long time to tie the fabric individually with thread. There are many different sizes and shapes of shibori. It didn’t look so special when I was a child because we see this everywhere. It is used in futon blankets, or Japanese cushions and many things in our life. It does look special now, especially when I first saw this piece.... It may look like a sea urchin, or coral.. We call this technique Bai Shibori. Bai is a type of shellfish and this shibori is so named because it's form looks like a shellfish. There are two different methods to make Bai Shibori: One is with an Ito-ire process (sewing) before binding with thread and the other is without Ito-ire. I love these dynamic 3D organic shapes. It’s Japanese traditional technique meets Sci-fi feel. https://dogstar.com.au/search?q=shibori
06.01.2022 During lockdown this weekend in Brisbane, we have been cleaning up our house and garage. It took a lot longer than we originally planned. We often get distracted so easily. I then found a small old wooden box which my daughter used to love. The box was her favourite when she was little, and she used to keep so many treasures in there that she collected from the bush. It has a beautiful butterfly painting on the lid. There were heart shaped rocks and dry pressed flowers, feat...hers and crystalised tree sap which she used to call fairy jewels. But most of all she kept hand written letters that she used to receive from her fairy friends! When she was little we used to live by a running creek in the bush, where there were many bush fairies around. Every few days she would write letters to fairies on dry leaves and pieces of bark and put them in her little fairy house outside near our veggie garden. She then received a returned letter from the fairies the next morning! She was fully communicating with them in the early morning and at dusk, hours and hours.. Singing and chatting away she would journey into their little world. Only they could see and hear each other... This happened for many years until we had to move closer to the city, where it was more convenient for our busy lives. My daughter had a new room and old things were packed into boxes. She wrote a few more letters to the new City fairies and put them in the new smaller garden to see if anyone was there, but she never received a reply. Overtime, as she grew older and slowly stepped away from that childhood land, the fairies became a distant memory as her interests changed to other things. My daughter never did ask if it was really just us writing the letters back to her.... I wonder if she will ask one day....? Until that day comes, I will keep this treasure box tucked away in a safe place.. Hidden from view, but forever close to my heart.
06.01.2022 Here is my new design called MONPE pants. MONPE are traditional Japanese pants that farmers and workmen used to wear. My grandma and great grandma used to wear them as everyday pants.... Traditionally they are made of cotton. This silhouette has been modified a bit, but the comfort is the same as the traditional MONPE. MONPE were not seen as 'cool', but rather as womans work pants. But here I think these MONPE are cool and comfortable! What do you think? https://dogstar.com.au/collections/new-arrivals/new-arrivals Visit us on Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/dogstarclothing/?hl=en
05.01.2022 BATH OR SHOWER? In Japan we bath everyday. Its our culture to have a bath after a day to finish and relax. We dont use bath salt in Japan although herbal plants are occasionally used for health.... When I was a child I was not allowed to come out of a hot bath until I counted 100 very slowly and my whole body warms up and relaxes. It was kind of a boring activity for me to sit in a bath tub when I was a kid. Here in Australia I dont have to bath that often. I guess water restriction is one reason and also bath can be quite hot in this weather. Do you bath often? Or prefer shower? There are many benefits of bathing, Please let me know your thought about having a bath...? https://dogstar.com.au/collections/new-arrivals
05.01.2022 SUMMER KIMONO We just introduced these vintage SUMMER KIMONO which are light weight and sheer, we wear them in the summer time in Japan. 04.01.2022 STRUCTURED WABI SABI The way I fold fabric and create shapes has some Japanese elements. It naturally folds in a particular way and the angels start telling a little story. I don't know quite yet what to make from here. It could be a beautiful top part of a dress, or an asymmetrical long tunic that can be worn with wide leg pants? ... What colour can you imagine with this structured neckline? https://dogstar.com.au/collections/sale
03.01.2022 (Wafuku + Yofuku?) Japan has a strong distinction between Japanese traditional clothing (wafuku) and Western clothing (yofuku). When I design for dogstar, I find that the boundaries blur; Japanese elements always seep in. The oversized pockets I love to use are reminiscent of kimono sleeves, which can be used to hold small personal items. The line of the Haori jacket makes sense to me with a wide pant, a familiar silhouette in so much of my culture. Styling our vintage kimon...os with dogstar pieces reminds me often that we work on a continuum. Where do you find most interesting in the space of overlap and in-between?
