23.01.2022 VON GORON AVA!!! This week in our Sunday Obedience Classes we practiced Recall past food. So, I decided to train this with Ava. Food Refusal - Choice Training, training without corrections. Ava is a co-owned pup from our 2019 litter. She will be used in our future breeding program and is here for a short holiday and some training. Ava lives in a family home with 3 young children her GSD uncle. ... Here is a raw, unedited video of her first training session. Ava makes mistakes, sometimes she fails! Thats ok, within 1 10min session, her understanding increases and she completes the exercise. As her trainer, she shows me where she lacks clarity in her understanding and gives me areas to work on in our next session. Clarity on her release word!!!!! First, I need to check with her family as I suspect maybe I am using the wrong one. Control around food teaches dogs respect for permission, this is a steppingstone behaviour for transfer of control around distraction and builds a working relationship of respect and listening. Permission to seek reward and ultimately, control of the dog. From here we can effectively use this method to train a dog who, jumps up, counter surfs, displays boisterous behaviours or reacts on leash! This really is everyday fundamental training. As you can see there is no punishment for stealing food, yet as we continue through the training session and her understanding grows, Ava chooses to show impulse control and ignore the food on recall even when she knows she can steal it and wont get in trouble. RESPECT, UNDERSTANDING, TRUST! She wants to do the right thing to earn her reward! Now as I do daily practice and her confidence in the exercise grows, I would expect to see the following: increase focus, no checking out the other dogs and speed. Peter Mazzone Smart Cookie Shelley Briggs What a good pup

23.01.2022 This video is a little longer than I usually post but it is a must watch! Im so glad I decided to video this training because it shows such a wonderful transformation on how life rewards impact our dogs. Most of us will use treats to teach a dog a new skill, thats great! However, its important to wean to life rewards to get that dream dog! A companion that is well behaved and a joy to take out. ... It is essential to teach the dog that good behaviour is in their best interest! I do recommend using treats throughout your dogs life, but this type of training also means you dont need to carry treats everywhere. Or bribe the dog. Life Rewards differ for each dog, you can use anything that motivates them. Some examples car ride walks sniffing off leash swimming In this video going for a walk is the reward. As you can see in the video, training the dog to understand life rewards is a learning process, it does not happen overnight. The first session takes about 7-8 mins of no self control for me to end the session, meaning Jax looses access to the life reward. (This is a long time frame but I wanted to assess his problem solving skills) Commit to the training outcome but support the dogs learning in the beginning! Anything my dogs love, they will only receive access to it though my permission. This transfers value to me not the environment. As a result, you get a dog that is focused and willingly checks in often with its owner. In this video my criteria is: Automatic sit Automatic stay Verbal release to the reward. (Permission) I dont want to micro manage the dog, I want them to be a thinker. Their reward is the motivation to offer behaviour. I achieve this by controlling access to the resource (the gate) not controlling the dog. (This is key) Once the dog overcomes this first hurdle and understands the learning, and the fact that their behaviour controls the consequence (door closing) or outcome/reward (walks) everything falls into place and its easy to apply this learning into everyday life with your dog. Choice Based Training improves the relationship between dog and handler, improves self and impulse control as well as creating a thinker! Its amazing to see this dog, jumping, humping, biting the leash and doing circles all in excitement and frustration to get out that gate! All that wasted energy when all he needs to do it a sit stay! Showing no understanding of this method of learning (we must be patient) - to 10 days later, a thinker who understands his behaviour controls his outcomes. And Off leash! As a result, diminishing undesirable displays of behaviour while protecting his confidence. Thats what dog training should be about

12.01.2022 Enrichment, Engagement & Training Providing enrichment for your pet improves quality of life. Daily engagement and training leave dogs with a feeling of fulfilment and satisfaction that has both psychological and physiological benefits. Enrichment should be safe and appropriate for the dog, stimulate natural behaviour, provide sensory and mental stimulation, involve physical movement and offer a achievable challenge. Dogs who actively work for their dinner, show a reduct...ion in boredom-related behaviour problems and an improvement in focus and concentration as the brain is regularly exercised. Enrichment, engagement and training builds a stronger bond between owner and dog through interactive play. Enrichment should be just that! If it becomes frustrating rather than engaging, over arousing rather than stimulating and exhausting rather than satisfying, it may lose its ability to enhance wellbeing.

08.01.2022 Own Multiple Dogs? Dogs in a pack will try to push the boundaries more than a singleton, so be sure to dedicate time individually to train them, before granting them off leash freedom! Look at these boys racing off to see who can get out in front! Training Tip! ... The most important time to practice recall, is for no reason at all! If you only call your dog when there is a distraction they will become opportunistic. Recall and release your dog multiple times per walk. See more

08.01.2022 Critical Learning & Reactivity in Dogs! COVID-19 Lockdown, A tragedy in the making! As a result of the COVID-19 Lockdown, more than usual, many puppies are missing critical exposure to environment and canine relationships. ... Fear Impact 8-10/11weeks The puppy is highly susceptible to long lasting effects of fearful stimuli at this stage. During these weeks anything the pup perceives as traumatic could be generalised, affecting him/her for the rest of his life. Take care to avoid fearful reactions during this stage. Environmental Awareness 9-12 weeks Exposure to many different environments and stimuli is important in this period. Sensory Classification 13-16 weeks Also known as the age of cutting puppy begins testing dominance and leadership. Meaningful praise is incredibly important to shape positive attitude. Window to easy socialisation closes. Emotional learning at this age is mostly permanent. The result of this = reactivity on or off leash to things such as, Sounds, Dogs, People & Common Stimuli. Reactivity - something or someone triggers the dog to do things like bark, growl, and lunge which can look like the dog is being aggressive. But that is not always the case. Reactivity can look like aggression, but many leash-reactive dogs are dealing with anxiety or fear, and they use the explosive displays in an attempt to keep away from the stimulus. Reactivity occurs due to reasons such as fear, frustration or true aggression this behaviour is caused from factors such as, improper socialisation and environmental conditioning, an unexpected spook or conditioned responses that form a habit. When training to reduce reactivity, our aim is to change the emotional response the dog has to the stimulus. Through reward training and confidence building, we can alter that response and show the dog a more appropriate way to interact when on or off leash. Our aim, to help your dog to focus and pay attention to you, using a positive and enriching approach a dog will learn faster and retain for longer if they find it fulfilling and enjoyable. This is the way the world of Professional Dog Training is shifting. Our training system will allow you to gain your dogs focus when around distractions and teach them how to be calm and well mannered. Training is designed to build a relationship and effective communication with your dog. (This is the major failing I see when owners have reactive dogs, their dog just will not listen to them. Owners struggle to hold their dogs attention or focus around distraction.) TIPS FOR SUCCESS - Train daily - Do not alter the training system - Only train when your dog is in the correct state of arousal - Limit all freedom for your dog to show reactive behaviour whilst in the early stages of training. - Know your dogs threshold to learn Contact us to learn more

07.01.2022 Biting in Puppies Week 1 of our Puppy Program we discuss play biting and bite inhibition. Here is a fantastic educational podcast to recap. ... Please Remember, -Most puppies do not bite out of aggression. (this is rare) Biting is how they play and learn. -Puppies bite! You can not stop it completely. Your training aim is to prevent the biting while the puppy learns that biting humans is inappropriate. -Children and puppies MUST be actively supervised. -Young children will be targeted by the puppy because the way in which they react encourages the puppy and is seen as rewarding. -Your interaction can increase or decrease the biting, you must play appropriately. -Teaching bite inhibition is a must -Over aroused pups will bite more (puppy rest is essential) -Every puppy responds differently to bite vocalisation, you may need to try a few tones to suit your pups response. -Ruff love, Puppies should not have free run of the house. A crate or pen is recommended as a safe rest area for the pup. Training Musts! -Collar grab training (Week 1) -Body Handling (Week 1) -Intentional Tug & Fetch / Toy Play (Week 2) https://youtu.be/6WpFeiJUxTQ

06.01.2022 Missing all the Obedience & Agility Dog Trials

06.01.2022 Drive fulfilment, a must for high drive dogs! We are big supporters of intentional play. All puppies are born with an inherited predatory hunting sequence, some breeds are even specifically bred for this trait. Some dogs have high chase drive, others low but it is there, found sandwiched between the search and finding, and the grab and kill skill. ... The act of chase is internal reinforcement. It triggers the brain to give the body a feeling of complete pleasure. This energy hit is powerful, every time your dog gets to rehearse their particular hard wired sequence it becomes stronger and better and more ingrained. This is why many owners struggle with unwanted chasing behaviours. Most commonly effecting one or more elements of recall. We as owners can create the same addiction to intentional play as prey chase, by establishing an appropriate outlet for the dog to meet its natural needs. We must also prevent rehearsals of unwanted chase to stop the development of creating at habit. This is why I always advise owners, to keep young puppies on a leash if in open areas or for introductions to cats and livestock. It can take as little as 1 chase rehearsal for a high drive pup to become addicted to the feeling of internal reinforcement, creating a life time of issues for the owners. I consider intentional play a key foundation skill! Before learning obedience my dogs are first taught the rules of play which builds relationship, self control, and life skills such as give and focus. Just like prey chase, intentional play taught correctly can cause that huge high from the many endorphins racing around their bodies. A much more appropriate way of the dog meeting it’s needs! So much so, that you can see it in them, to such an extent that they even close down other senses to concentrate on it. Meaning they are not even open to the distractions of other potential chase. (Sound familiar when trying to call your dog mid chase? They can’t hear you.) Dog’s living in multi-dog homes should be taught how to take turns or chase their own ball each to prevent unwanted behaviour.

03.01.2022 Muzzle Up Why use a muzzle? Dogs may show signs of aggression but the underpinning reason is usually fear, uncertainty or nervousness! These dogs will usually choose flight over fight but when flight is not an option may opt for a warning nip or in some cases a full blown bite. ... The restrictive nature of muzzles can cause frustration and increase stress in an already anxious dog, sometimes causing them to show increased reactivity. This can then lead to a further negative association to the trigger. Muzzle training any fearful or anxious dog is a must so that if the time comes that they must be restrained like a medical visit the muzzle does not cause them further stress. All dogs can learn to except a muzzle just like a collar or car harness it just takes some positive training.
