25.01.2022 I was thrilled to receive this email about how skills learnt in the first lesson of Level 1 Program have already been used successfully in real life: "I just wanted to tell you how glad I am to be doing this training with Sunny. This afternoon we did a 5 minute session and she did great. She particularly grasped the ‘touch’ idea (*note: this is when you ask your dog to touch your hand with her nose) "We had a great moment where she got out the front late this afternoon. Frien...ds were leaving and she got out the front door. She took off down the road which she always does when she has the chance. Previously she wouldn’t come back to me when I called her and it was hard work to bring her home again - very scary. Today, I made the touch hand signal and called her name, no treats on me, and she came to me!! I tried to pick her up and she evaded me and trotted away again. I made the hand signal again and she came to me again! I scooped her up and gave her lots of praise and we went straight to the fridge for a treat. I was so proud of her and so grateful to you for your help. After 1 lesson! "Just wanted to say thank you and tell you what a difference it has already made, and how proud I am of her. She did so great in the class, especially because she loves other dogs more than anything in the world, and she wasn’t allowed to say hello to any of the other dogs. I could see how excruciating it was for her. She doesn’t care very much about treats usually if there’s other dogs she can be with. I feel really hopeful about us developing the relationship I want with her and for her to follow my instructions. Thank you!"

23.01.2022 German Shepherd Dog, Kaiser, has been having private lessons to be more consistent with basic manners such as lead walking, stay, etc. His recall is now good enough for him to be allowed off lead. He comes running back when called even when he’s playing with other dogs at the beach. Well done Kaiser and family
23.01.2022 If your dog runs along your fence and barks at your neighbours or the dog next door, one thing you can do is create another fence, 1 meter away from your dividing fence. Giving your dog this additional distance from your neighbours can lower the intensity of the interaction and reduce barking. You can make a simple fence using star pickets, wire mesh and cable ties from a hardware store. If the problem is that your dog can see your neighbours, then you can construct your in...ner fence from shade cloth which will reduce visual stimulation. You can use this solution even if you're renting because it'll be easy to remove if you leave the property.
21.01.2022 I've been enjoying teaching American Staffy, Boston, his basic manners and how to be calm when he sees other dogs on walks. Boston loves the attention and treats that he gets with training and is eager to learn.
21.01.2022 Summer in Australia is bushfire season. Floods and other emergencies can happen at any time. Do you have a plan for taking your dogs with you if you have to evacuate? You will need a Grab and Go bag containing all your dog's essentials such as food, medication, bedding, food and water bowls, a bottle of water, a spare lead and harness, pick up bags, etc. A travel crate is also highly recommended as this may be required in an evacuation centre or hotel. You can buy soft-side...d, collapsible crates that are easy to store with your Grab and Go Bag. Some things you can do right now to prepare are: * Keep your dog's collar and ID tag on at all times. * Check petregistry online or ring your council to ensure all of your contact details associated with your dog's microchip are up to date. * Teach your dog to be comfortable spending time in his emergency travel crate. The NSW SES website has more information.
19.01.2022 These children’s fold out sofas make very good dog and cat beds. I always grab them when I see them in Op Shops or on the curb for collection and donate them to local dog and cat rescues.
19.01.2022 I've researched online Puppy Guides and Adopting an Adult Dog Guides and believe that these guides from Bowwowmeow are the best. They reflect modern force-free training methods and dog care advice. I give a printed copy of the puppy guide to all my Puppy Package clients. Dog Rescue Newcastle gives a printed copy of either the puppy or adult dog guide to all adopters. You can get your free copy to download or read online:... 18.01.2022 Dogs get bored too. You have lots of activities to keep you occupied, but your dog relies on you to provide things for him to do. Enriching your dog’s life doesn’t always involve food, it should also involve his other senses, and fulfilling social needs.
17.01.2022 It was too hot to walk my dogs yesterday so I exercised their minds instead. Puzzle toys, food dispensing toys, nose work and training are all good ways to occupy your dog’s busy brain.
16.01.2022 Ooshies are very attractive to dogs. If eaten by a dog, Ooshies can cause choking or get stuck in intestines. Be careful to keep them away from dogs.
15.01.2022 For Lake Macquarie residents:
14.01.2022 If your small dog is barking and lunging at people or dogs, he is not trying to rule the world or attack, he is feeling vulnerable and trying to tell the world to leave him alone! Respect your small dog's need to feel safe. Help him out by not putting him in situations where he needs to defend himself. Be his defender so he doesn't have to be.

13.01.2022 I’ve been working with Louis the whippet on recall, lead walking and calmer reactions to people on skateboards and bikes, and traffic.
11.01.2022 Budgewoi, Central Coast NSW dog owners beware. Be very careful about who you let groom your dog. Pet grooming is totally unregulated. Anyone can call themselves a groomer and setup a grooming business. Don’t leave your dog unattended, at least for the first several visits. You need to see for yourself how your dog is handled. I’ve taken my dogs away from a groomer midway through a clip because she was being too rough with my dog. I’ve also inspected a salon which was filthy so I never took my dog there. You are your dog’s advocate. They can’t tell you what goes on when you leave them so you have to see for yourself. Now I use a mobile groomer that I trust. I can watch the entire process and my dogs don’t spend any time in a cage waiting around in a salon. (I copied the story in this image from another page, it was not my experience)
10.01.2022 When meeting a new dog, most dogs will TOLERATE inappropriate behaviour from humans, but won't enjoy it. Some dogs will not tolerate it and will tell you to go away by growling, snapping or biting. Keep safe and keep dogs happy by not doing these things when meeting dogs: 1) sticking your hand in a dog's face... 2) leaning over a dog 3) patting on the head 4) holding the dog's face and putting your face into theirs 5) hugging a dog See more
10.01.2022 Caution: A wagging tail doesn't always mean the dog is happy! You need consider the position of the tail, it's speed, and stiffness, and look at the whole dog to determine what the dog's body language is telling you. Test your tail knowledge:... https://www.facebook.com/166775166774321/videos/851961635183573/ See more

09.01.2022 Help with lead walking. Emily has links to more lead walking and dog training videos on YouTube channel kikopup.
05.01.2022 Walking down streets can be very stressful for some dogs like Polly because random dogs suddenly run up to fences barking at you! Here we are practicing calmness.
