24.01.2022 Today we farewelled Plugga, our resilient and beautiful three-flippered Australian Green Sea Turtle. After being rescued as a badly injured hatchling she finally outgrew her home with us and has moved to SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium where she can continue to thrive. Green Sea Turtles (Scientific Name: Chelonia mydas) are endangered. They commonly live for up to 80 years and are the largest hard shell sea turtles growing up to 1.5 metres long and weighing 300 kg. Plugga is onl...y 75cm long so she still has a lot of growing to do! The plan is to eventually release Plugga back to the wild once she successfully adjusts to her spacious new home and is properly prepared for the potentially hazardous journey ahead. In honour of Plugga, we're resharing the video we aired about three months ago as part of our regular live streams and educational video sharing. As you will see, Plugga was a little camera shy this day and we highly recommend taking a peek at the follow-up videos. Bon voyage Plugga! Sending much love from the team at Dolphin Marine Rescue, Dolphin Marine Conservation Park and all your friends and supporters on the Coffs Coast. #DolphinMarineRescue #GreenSeaTurtles #CoffsCoast

24.01.2022 CHEWIE UPDATE Chewie set for release soon! Named after the much-loved Star Wars character, Chewie is on track for a successful recovery and release. The long-nosed fur seal pup is under the expert care of our veterinary and marine animal team at Dolphin Marine Rescue, our not-for-profit facility at Dolphin Marine Conservation Park Chewie was rescued by a Coffs Coast local who noticed the injured seal on the beach near Grassy Head. We assessed he was most likely atta...cked by a predator and also hit by a boat propeller His injuries were so severe that it was touch and go as to whether he would survive. Now, he looks like being released within weeks! Our Vet, Dr Duan March, explains the balance required with caring for rescued animals and rehabilitating them for release back into the wild. "We get them eating so they can receive medication while their wounds heal but without the animals becoming reliant on humans. Chewie is a wild seal and when released, he will still be capable of reintegrating into the ocean and catching his food." Watch this space for Chewie's release date! #DolphinMarineRescue #coffscoast #LoveNSW See more

16.01.2022 Today, we farewelled Chewie! After many weeks of expert veterinary care and lots of TLC from our marine mammal team, the resilient New Zealand Fur Seal Pup made an impressive recovery from horrific injuries which we suspect were caused by a predator and a boat propeller. Special thanks to the fantastic team at Whale Watch Experience Coffs Harbour for taking us out on your beautiful boat to release this cheeky seal. Chewie seemed to reluctant to say goodbye to his carers. He came back for a second look.. and then swam off! Goodbye Chewie. We will all miss you and wish you a long life exploring the oceans. #DolphinMarineConservationPark #DolphinMarineRescue #CoffsHarbour #VisitNSW #CoffsCoast

09.01.2022 Did you know that only one in 1000 baby sea turtles survives to be a teenager? To celebrate National Science Week 2020, we're thrilled to share a new podcast series featuring our very own in-house Vet and Green Sea Turtle expert, Dr Duan March. If you've got a spare 28 minutes this afternoon, check-in and listen to Duan chatting to Host, Associate Professor Tracy Ainsworth, a coral biologist from UNSW Sydney. Duan shares his wealth of knowledge about Green Sea Turtles... along the marine rich Coffs Coast and what we can do to help more survive and thrive This series of 11 podcasts focuses on research in Australia by leading marine experts talking about the marine places on their doorsteps that have inspired them and how their love of these spots has influenced their life’s work. 05.01.2022 A week or so ago we were called to rescue a baby seal off the beach at Grassy Head, about 50 minutes south of Coffs Harbour. His injuries were so severe, we weren't sure he would survive Our vet assessed his wounds and determined that not only had he most likely been attacked by a juvenile shark but also a boat propeller! Fortunately, after almost two weeks under the expert care of our marine animal care team, 'Chewie' (named after the Star Wars character, Chewbacca...) is recovering well. His wounds are healing and he's eating and drinking. Once he's strong enough and moving and swimming competently again, we'll return Chewie to his ocean home. Chewie is a young male long-nosed fur seal (Arctocephalus fosteri) normally found around southern Australia and New Zealand, we see them occasionally in NSW. In Australian waters, fur seals are protected under the Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act and in NSW they are classified as vulnerable under the Threatened Species Conservation Act. Weighing just 10.2kg and 83cm long when rescued, Chewie could grow to a whopping 160kg and two metres long in the wild feasting on a diet of Octopus, squid, fish and seabirds. Apart from their natural predators, humans are the seals' greatest threat through fishing nets and discarded fishing line entanglement, and plastic waste ingestion. Fishermen and women can help protect our seals by supporting #SealTheLoop and disposing of fishing line in the bins provided along the coast and we can all help by reducing single-use plastics and recycling. We'll keep you posted on Chewie's progress. Watch this space for updates. Thank you to the team at NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service for your assistance. #DophinMarineResue #furseals #coffsharbour

05.01.2022 Thank you to the member of the public from Mullaway who contacted us after finding this Elegant sea snake, washed up & underweight. X-ray results from Woolgoolga vet are clear. The snake has been given fluids and with some TLC we hope to release in the next few days. A reminder to all that sea snakes are extremely venomous & should not be handled. If found contact your local National Parks & Wildlife Office. #wildlifeconservation #marineconservation #animalrescue #dolphinmarinerescue #coffscoast #coffsharbournsw #seasnake

04.01.2022 So what's it really like to be a marine animal trainer and carer? Experience a 'day in the life' with our new video launching tomorrow on our sister FB page Dolphin Marine Conservation Park at 10am. 04.01.2022 Recently we assisted Crown Lands with a stranded Sperm Whale at South Ballina Beach. Sadly, the magnificent mammal had died and we did all we could to help with a dignified removal. It was truly gut-wrenching to see and getting up so close just emphasised how important it is for us to learn more about how we can protect these epic creatures of the sea. #DolphinMarineRescue #CoffsHarbour #Whales

03.01.2022 This week we released two green sea turtles after months of rehabilitation at Dolphin Marine Rescue. Affectionately named Henry and Mouse, the young turtles, estimated to be 10 to 15 years old, were rescued from Scotts Head, 50 minutes south of Coffs Harbour. Both turtles were lethargic and in poor condition, and unlikely to survive without treatment. This release was assisted with a Federal Government grant we received as part of the Communities Environment Program. The g...rant enabled the purchase of an industrial heater for our pre-release rehabilitation tank. The heater maintains the water at around 24 degrees Celsius, ideal for sea turtle recovery. Before turtles are released, the temperature is adjusted to simulate ocean conditions so they acclimatise quickly. The new heater will be even more critical during winter. With the water temperature just right, Henry and Mouse regained fitness and were released back into the ocean. The Dolphin Marine Rescue team thanks local MP, Mr Pat Conaghan and his team for their support. Mr Conaghan helped with the release, alongside our young marine conservation group, EcoGroms. Leaders from EcoGroms will share the experience with their Primary School classmates and promote the importance of marine stewardship for future generations. Now, with 18 more sick and injured sea turtles in our care, we look forward to sharing news about their releases soon. Watch this space!
