22.01.2022 These photos taken just after birth at Dolwen Stud this afternoon. Now all of our original Hillgrove ewes have lambed and we have been lucky and have had 4 baby girls and 1 little fella.
19.01.2022 One of the triplets has been falling off the pace a little with two very vigorous siblings to compete with. I made the decision to pull her off her mother who was concentrating on her stronger lambs. She is being looked after by some friends with a lot of experience with hand rearing baby lambs and a nice warm fire. I might pick her up again tomorrow after work. She is in the best hands and would probably be better off down there for a few days. Perhaps the ewe with the over supply of milk might make a good foster mother later.
17.01.2022 Babydoll triplets at their birthing site at Dolwen Stud.
15.01.2022 Two of the triplets monkeying around.
12.01.2022 Another ewe lamb was born this morning to a ewe that didn't look pregnant. In fact she has no visible udder as you look at her. It was a hard frost last night so she did well to survive in the open. I hadn't brought her to shelter as she wasn't showing. Yesterday's lamb had a coat made for her last night for the frost and I couldn't believe just how warm she was with the icy conditions in the middle of the night.
10.01.2022 We had a ram lamb born in the early hours this morning. That's the good news. It was a twin and unfortunately I found the other one a bit away from it's mother. A farmer friend of mine thought that an eagle had found it; judging by the way that it had been eaten. The mother and lamb have been brought up to the shelter and pen by the house for safety along with another ewe who looks like she will give birth soon.
07.01.2022 This morning we had our first Babydoll lambs of the season. One of our original Hillgrove Ewes (Harold - think Monty Python) gave birth to triplets. It was a beautiful warm and sunny morning and she chose a sheltered birthing site down near the creek. I built them a temporary yard and shelter and brought them up there by the house to keep them safe from foxes and the elements. It's sheltered by shade cloth around the pen and one section made from pallets has a roof made of bu...ilders plastic. There is bedding in there made from hay. It has been raining for most of the last ten hours and I have put the lambs in the roofed section a few times but they keep coming out into the rain. They are standing hunched up at times and look cold but when you touch them they are really warm and I think that is because she is feeding them so well. She has good mothering instincts and they seem to be feeding nearly every time I go to check on them. See more
01.01.2022 A cool but sunny day a few days after birth. Practicing all the skills necessary to keep warm ready for the frost tonight.
