24.01.2022 It is with great sadness we share the news of the passing of Domaine A’s founder, Peter Althaus. Along with his wife, Ruth, Peter saw potential in Tasmania as an ideal location and latitude to produce cool-climate wine. Emigrating from Europe, they scoured the globe for a site, almost settling in New Zealandwhat a loss to Australia that would have beenbefore coming across Stoney Vineyard, the oldest winery in the Coal River Valley. In 1989 they purchased the vineyard from w...ine pioneers George and Priscilla Park who planted the original single acre 16 years prior. Releasing their first wine in 1990, Peter and Ruth continued to produce wines at the site until 2018 when, after a careful selection of buyers, they sold the winery to David Walsh and handed the reigns to Moorilla’s winemaker, Conor van der Reest. Through his work in the wine industry, patronage of Ten Days on The Island, Brand Tasmania, Musica Viva and championing of many other organisations and local talent, Peter helped lift the prospects and reputation of his discovered home tremendously. His tireless and passionate advocacy built a strong brand reputation for Tasmania and its wines both domestically and in overseas markets. There’s an impressive list of past vintage hands, winemakers, business managers and industry comrades who benefitted from his generosity of time and knowledge and his impact will be felt for years to come in the Australian wine scene. We raise a glass to the legacy Peter created with Domaine A, a remarkable brand we are proud and grateful to remain custodians of. We will continue to honour his winemaking legacy in each bottle we produce. Vale Peter.

24.01.2022 Two of our flagship reds, produced in small quantities at our Coal River vineyard in Tasmania, are being prepared for release. If you’re new here, we’re known for holding back our wines until they are readyup to ten years after vintage. These two are due for release in the next few weeksmaybe the bottles will give you a hint to what they are. Regardless, we’ll let you know soon. Subscribe to our mailing list on our website and you’ll have first access.

24.01.2022 Walshie’s Wine Cult has emerged from the shadows. We’ve sacrificed a bottle of our 2009 Domaine A Cabernet Sauvignon to the Initiation Pack which also includes Moorilla Cloth Label and Muse cellar releases. The six wines are all offered at a sacrilegious price of $285 (RRP $494). You’ll also get a swathe of other benefits, including 20% of the entire Moorilla store, including our core range of Domaine A wines. Feeling tempted? To celebrate your indoctrination, you’ll receive... a limited edition, ‘blind tasting’ vessel, handcrafted by Kristel Britcher. Every cult needs a chalice. Praise be. https://drink.domaine-a.com.au/join-cult

24.01.2022 It’s the final ten days of our #loveyourdomaine giveaway. Take a photo of your ‘domaine’ and tell us what you love about it. Most creative entry wins a $600 Domaine A prize pack. We’re also doing spot giveaways of Stoney Vineyard wines throughout the competition, so enter (and enter again.) The home of Domaine in Campania, 30 minutes outside of Hobart, is often described as 'magic’. Though under its third stewardship, it’s the continuity of the site that unites Domaine A acro...ss the years, since the first successful planting in 1973. All of the things that a winemaker looks for come together at Stoney Vineyarda variety of soil types, north facing slopes, natural windbreaks and topography of surrounding hills that divert the flow of frost into the site. Situated on a bedrock of nearly 200 million-year-old Jurassic dolerite layered, in different blocks, with evidence of gravel, sandy clay loam, and even grey cracking clay. The vineyard is close planted in the European tradition (1.9 x 0.9m), with a density of 6000 vines per hectare. The sloping North-North Easterly aspect and foliage height of 1400mm enables vines to take full advantage of prolonged sunshine. Annual rainfall is often less than 500mm. Grapes ripen well into late April and early May, bringing flavours of great subtlety and intensity to the wines. Our harvest is one of the longest and latest finishing in Australia. The cool-climate of Tasmania has turned out to be a rather special place to grow wine, initially dismissed by wine pioneers who preferred the hills surrounding Adelaide, South Australia. Within the larger story of Tasmania, the Stoney Vineyard site has turned out to be a particularly exciting chapter. Tell us what’s unique about your ‘domaine’ and you could wine a wine pack, consisting of all our Domaine A wines and a bottle of rare Campaniac brandy. Simply post a video or image and tag Domaine A and #loveyourdomaine on Instagram or facebook to enter. Make sure your post is public so we can see it. https://drink.domaine-a.com.au/home

Or if self-restraint is an option, they’ll continue improving in the cellar for some time. Three flagship Domaine A reds, each a singular expression of cabernet from Stoney Vineyard’s ancient terroira tiny, cool-climate plot at the end of the earth creating wines to rival Bordeaux’s best. With our vineyard’s best cabernet fruit leadin...g the charge, our Domaine A Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 is all about longevity. It’s warm, elegant and structured, matured in new French oak for three years before spending another five or six years in the cellar. Ripe dark cherry, shades of cedar and clove, cassis and fine tannic structure build to a brilliant finish. Same fruit but seasoned barrels for our Stoney Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2016a careful blend of cab sav with merlot, cab franc and petit verdotcreating an altogether softer cabernet: new leather, warm earth and a bountiful Christmas cake palate. Compare that to the Domaine A petit ‘a’ Cabernet 2013: higher in merlot, this cabernet is a fresh and vital take on Domaine A’s classic characteristics. Expect lively notes of tomato skins, raspberries and herbaceous pepper, alongside excellent structure and a long, blackberry pie finish. Free delivery nation-wide. 15.01.2022 It’s the final week of our #loveyourdomaine giveaway. Competition closes May 3. Take a photo of your ‘domaine’ and tell us what you love about it. Most creative entry wins a $600 Domaine A prize pack. Here's why we love our Domaine. When the Althaus' took over stewardship, they chose Domaine A as their brand’s moniker. The name stemsexcuse the punfrom the European use of ‘domaine,’ representative of a wine estate where the fruit and wine are grown and made in one locatio...n. Along with stablemates, @moorillawinery, Domaine A sits in contrast to many new and emerging wine label where the maker buys fruit and makes the wine. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But it’s nice knowing the grapes are just outside our home. While putting together this contest, we dug up Ruth Althaus' hand written plan for planting D Block at Stoney Vineyard. Cuttings for the cabernet were gifted to by Claudio Alcorso, who had had success establishing them at Moorilla. It's one of many beautiful stories that showing the interconnection and mutual support between the pioneers of Tasmania's fledgling wine industry. You might be wondering about the striped "A" on our labels. Fans of the brand will know they’re designed in consultation with a synesthetesomeone who experiences a crossover between senses in their brain. The colours are chosen by the association of the tastes to colours and tones. Each stripe represents an aesthetic interpretation of the fruit structure, acidity, and tannins of the given vintage. Every year the A is a little bit different. Tell us what’s different about your ‘domaine’ and you could win a wine pack, consisting of all our Domaine A wines and a bottle of rare Campaniac brandy. Simply post a video or image and tag Domaine A and #loveyourdomaine on Instagram or facebook to enter. Make sure your post is public so we can see it. Good luck! We’ve six-packed it up with some other beauties from Stoney Vineyard. $150 for the pack, plus a very handy bag to carry them in. Go on -> https://drink.domaine-a.com.au/Pinot-2019

14.01.2022 This is the Domaine A Campaniac, one of the prizes in our #loveyourdomaine competition. Handsome, isn't it? We redesigned the packaging from the ground up, referencing the topography of Domaine A's vineyard. It's also rarewe only make 220 bottles of this special brandy when production conditions are right using pre-fermented solids from the Lady A sauvignon blanc grape harvest. Aged for 4 years in 60-litre oak casks, the nose is complex and lightly spiced, with hi...nts orange peel, dried apricot and toasted almonds. A swirl and a taste reveals marmalade, butterscotch, vanilla and a honeyed sweetness that lifts to a gentle warmth on the finish. It’s usually a cellar door exclusive, but that’s a little unfair in the current circumstances, so we’re posting one out to our winner. Tell us what’s unique about your ‘domaine’ and you could win a juicy wine pack, consisting of all our Domaine A wines and a bottle of this rare Campaniac brandy. Simply post a video or image and tag Domaine A and #loveyourdomaine on Instagram or facebook to enter. Make sure your post is public so we can see it. https://drink.domaine-a.com.au/campaniac

13.01.2022 Journalist and wine critic Winsor Dobbin writes of our new pinot noir, Many seven-year-old wines are on their way out. This is very much at its peak right now. One for sipping and sipping; admiring rather than sculling. French oak is impressively integrated on a seamless palate. A wine that whispers, ‘look how serious I am’. Every pinot we make is a risk. Some years we don’t make one at all. But back in 2013, Peter must’ve had a good feeling when he barrelled this vint...age. It’s a classicthe consummate Tasmanian pinot noir. Bright in the glass, the hue is reminiscent of port wine jelly and mulberry, with aromatics of Christmas pudding, black cherry and port-soaked raisins, as well as violet and lilac. The palate is velvety and silken soft with beautifully integrated tannins, structure and impressive acidity providing backbone. Notes of star anise, plum, cranberry and a touch of menthol unite to create an almost blackcurrant pastille-like flavour, and lead to a subtle dark chocolate finish. This is a warming, winter pinot and will pair brilliantly with grilled mushrooms, marinated pork or duck à l’orange. Order now: https://drink.moorilla.com.au/Pinot-13

06.01.2022 It’s the final weekend to enter our #loveyourdomaine competition. Win a $600 prize pack by telling us what you love about your domaine. Maybe it's who you love? Which leads us into one of our final stories which is about our iconic Lady A, recently described by Mike Bennie from Winefront as ‘a benchmark for white wine in Australia.’ When Peter and Ruth Althaus began expanding Stoney Vineyard, the small number of Sauvignon Blanc vines on site seemed a little at odds with thei...r grand Cabernet plan. Not surprisingly, Ruth asked Peter to pull them out. At great personal risk, Peter ignored her. And so, the legendary Lady A was born. Produced from the 1ha estate planting of old vines, picked in small batches, fermented in new French oak, and matured on lees for 12 months before bottling (and a further 2 years on cork), it turns out Lady A was well worth the marital trouble. In fact, it’s Ruth’s favourite wine. Proof that, very occasionally, it’s ok to ignore your wife. To enter, post a picture or video of your domaine to your account and tell us a great story. Make sure you tag us and #loveyourdomaine so we see it. If you’re curious to see why so many love the Lady, you can purchase it in a special 3-pack with the ‘11 Pinot noir and ‘08 Cabernet for $200. Be quick. Stocks are fleeting. https://drink.domaine-a.com.au/bundle-me

02.01.2022 You have been tapped to join the cult. https://drink.domaine-a.com.au/join-cult

01.01.2022 We’ve seen a lot of excellent home cellars and wine collections in our #loveyourdomaine competition. It’s time to talk a bit about ours. Winemaking and wine collecting take nerves of steel. Especially when the yield or cargo is precious (read: pricey). Whether it’s a bottle in your home cellar or juice in a barrel at Domaine A, restraint is key. When done right, it’s nerve-racking but worth it. While our Stoney Vineyard wines take out the guesswork and are made to drin...k sooner, our Domaine A wines are based on the mantra, ‘Good things come to those who wait.’ Our harvest is long and one of the latest finishing in Australia. Once they hit the barrels, we give them lots of quality time to build up structure. After bottling, we often hold them back much longer than standard, giving them excellent cellar conditions before they make it into your hands. The next bit is up to you. Apparently the average time between purchase and consumption is 6.5 hours in Australia. We’ve no idea how they figured that out, but Domaine A is the exception to the rule. We release our wines ready to drink, but if you can exercise self-control they’ll develop for at least 2025 years in your home cellar. Speaking of which: want to give your home collection a boost? You have until Sunday 3 May to enter our competition. Tag us in a photo of your ‘domaine’ (#loveyourdomaine), along with a great story telling us why you love it, and you’ll be in the running to win a $600 Domaine A prize pack. : @simplywines from a cellar tour earlier this year.
