14.01.2022 WHAT IS VALDOCCO? Valdocco is the area of Turin (north western Italy) where Don Bosco established his first "oratory" in 1846, the Oratory of St Francis de Sales: a place where young people gathered to play, pray, learn and live. In the photo you can see Don Bosco interacting with the boys, boys playing games, a pump where they gathered for water after games, and the bell on top of the building, which would call everyone to prayer. The building was originally owned by Mr Jo...seph Pinardi, who rented rooms to various tenants. Don Bosco began renting one room, a lean-to shed at back, which was converted into a chapel, and some land on which the boys could run and play games. Don Bosco eventually purchased the whole property, which became the Oratory, where he developed his ingenious method of engaging with the young using "reason, religion and loving-kindness." See more
