19.01.2022 Newborn babies and their mums are transforming lives through amnion donation, helping to treat patients with damaged eyes and skin wounds. Amnion donation is a unique living donation program, whereby women having an elective caesarean section can agree to donate their fetal tissues including the amnion membrane, which would otherwise be discarded. Depending on the size of the amnion, up to thirty patients can be helped from just one donor.... This innovative program was launched by the NSW Organ & Tissue Donation Service in late 2018 and is the first of its kind in NSW. Here’s a great 9 News Sydney story, highlighting the incredible work achieved through the NSW Tissue Bank’s amnion donation program. #DonateLife #OrganDonation #TissueDonation

09.01.2022 Last week we asked you which other organ can be donated by a living donor. And the answer is........ Partial Liver - which a vast majority of you answered correctly. In very rare circumstances, part of the liver can be donated by a live donor. In Australia, this usually happens between a parent and a child. And while a partial lung can be donated by a living donor, it's not done here in Australia.... Live liver donation can be quite risky, which is why it’s only considered as a last resort. There are only a handful of these operations in Australia each year. #DonateLive #Organdonation #tissuedonation

06.01.2022 Dineish from Sydney is getting ready to participate in Saffron Day this month. About two years ago, a close family member of Dineish’s was unexpectedly diagnosed with end stage kidney disease and told he needed to commence dialysis immediately for 10 hours a day. After learning that it could take 3-4 years on the waiting list for a deceased donor kidney, Dineish offered to become a living donor. Luckily, he was a match and eight months later, both donor and recipient are do...ing well. Dineish says it’s been incredible to witness the difference a transplant makes, and is so proud that he was able to save the life of someone so close to him. Dineish is encouraging his family and friends to get involved in Saffron Day on the 22nd October to raise awareness for organ and tissue donation. He admits that prior to his family member’s diagnosis, he hadn’t thought about registering as a donor and felt it was always an uncomfortable discussion to have with his family. I was never against it, but I always thought, ‘I’ll do it later’. All of this changed when my family member, who is young and fit, suddenly needed a transplant to survive. These diseases don’t discriminate and could affect anyone. Raising awareness about organ donation is now something I’m very passionate about. Dineish. Are you ready for #SaffronDay? #DoitforDeyaan #DonateLife #OrganDonation

03.01.2022 Our research shows that if you tell your family you would like to be a donor, it makes it easier for your family to say yes to donation when you die. Today, we released Wave 4 of our National Donor Family Study which provides us with valuable insights into the experiences of families who faced a donation decision in 2016-17. Our DonateLife nurses and medical specialists speak to families during what is often the most difficult moment of their lives. The study gives us dire...ct feedback from families, both good and bad, to help identify areas for improvement so that we can continue to deliver a world-leading donation program. The release of this report comes as we prepare for DonateLife Thank You Day on 22 November, a national day to acknowledge the generosity of donors and their families who make organ and tissue donation possible. You can find out more about the study and the work we do to support families here: https://bit.ly/2Its3rw #donatelife #organdonation #thankyouday2020

01.01.2022 Manisha from Victoria knows first-hand how important it is to be an organ donor. After battling kidney disease for five years, Manisha received a donor kidney from a close friend and her life changed overnight. That was eight years ago and her commitment to organ and tissue donation awareness has never waned. Manisha is a great supporter of Saffron Day, held in memory of young Deyaan Udani, who died suddenly on a holiday to India at the age of seven. Deyaan became an organ d...onor, saving four lives. Because I’m a kidney recipient, I know how very important it is to pledge your organs, says Manisha. Once you leave the body, your organs are of no use to you anymore. As I see it, they will either go to ash, or go underground - so why not bestow them to a noble cause and save lives? As an organ donor, you can save the lives of many people. The wonderful thing that Deyaan’s family did was to honour what he wanted to do with his organs and that is a truly beautiful thing. Manisha is encouraging others to help raise awareness for organ and tissue donation on 22 October by wearing orange and talking to family, friends and colleagues. To learn more, go to the Saffron Day Facebook page. #SaffronDay #DoitforDeyaan #donatelife #Organdonation #tissuedonation

01.01.2022 Today is World Sight Day. Did you know that someone who is blind, has poor vision or suffers from eye disease can still become an eye and tissue donor? It’s a common misconception that having poor eyesight means you cannot donate your eyes when you die. In actual fact, if your cornea is healthy, you can still become an eye donor to save someone else’s sight. A record number of Australians benefited from eye donation in 2019, with 2,414 people receiving a corneal transplant.... Muffy Churches from Sydney received a corneal transplant earlier this year, after being diagnosed with the genetic disorder Fuchs Dystrophy. After quickly losing my sight, one magical hour in surgery changed my life. Thanks to an amazing tissue donor, a damaged cornea was replaced and my heart bursts with gratitude for their beautiful gift. I look forward to returning the favour for others when it’s my turn. - Muffy A new eye donor app has launched just in time for World Sight Day, developed by UOW: University of Wollongong, Australia PhD nursing student and Sydney/Sydney Eye Hospital nurse, Amy Chumkasian. Search Eye Donor Australia to download the app for free on Google Play or Apple, and find out if you’re eligible for eye donation. #WorldSightDayAU #TissueDonation #donatelife
