09.01.2022 Smart Business Tips The 5 Golden Rules of Negotiation Start getting a whole lot more going your way today with the 5 golden rules of negotiation. Negotiation is an important and powerful skill that you use every day. Whether its talking a child into eating their vegies, finding middle ground with a mate on a time to catch up or compromising with a colleague on wholl fetch the coffee. As youre no doubt aware, its an acquired skill that comes through experience. But thats ...learning the hard way. Instead, by being aware of some fundamentals of human nature, negotiation can be learned much quicker with fewer losing battles along the way. If you stick by the 5 golden rules in negotiation, you can bet your kids eat their vegies, mates meet your suggestions and colleagues fetch your coffee. 1. Appreciation Stronger rapport creates better deals so build a relationship before diving into nutting out any negotiation. 2. Autonomy People hate being told what to do or being given ultimatums, so never tell them to take it or leave it. Always give the impression the decision is theirs to make and they have the freedom to make it. 3. Affiliation Turn adversaries into colleagues by finding common ground and building negotiations from there. Also, ask them for advice, its the best way to turn an adversary into an advocate. 4. Status Never belittle people in negotiations, it will only get their back up and make them harder to come to terms with. Listen to your mum and if you dont have anything nice to say then dont say anything at all. 5. Role Ensure that everybody has a fulfilling role in the process. And remember to go back to the underlying process of negotiation, rather than haggling over the final outcome. Explore the underlying reasons for differing preferences instead of rushing toward the end result. So when youre in negotiations be actively aware of the five golden rules and see how much the outcome differs. Because theyre the five simple steps to start getting a whole lot more going your way today. See more
