25.01.2022 A Captain's Chair that needed a little loving that I have been working on.

25.01.2022 Having a quick look at what is selling in the showrooms of Melbourne designers.

23.01.2022 A little peek at the latest progress...

23.01.2022 It has been a long time since I have seen an old bread board. This lovely one was made in Tasmania around 1930. Looking back, it raises some interesting questions... like, what happened when we moved away from lovely items like this to a lump of plastic in our Kitchens? Perhaps more fundamentally, is sliced bread all that it is cracked up to be... with the benefit of hindsight? Sure it has been convenient... but food is about much more than convenience, isn't it? There i...s a strong body of science around now clearly showing that the value of food is not only in how it is grown/made, but also on how we approach the food when we prepare and consume it. Many ancient (and not so ancient) communities handled food in a very different way than we do today. I just can't help wonder if convenience is having a much bigger price to pay than we realise? What say you? See more

19.01.2022 These two chairs were saved from a trip to the dump. They were disassembled, cleaned, re-glued and sanded. Now is the time for your input. Stained or oiled? And big decision on the back and seat finish, which we can discuss. With this project, your suggestions are welcomed and this may be the start of a new idea where you - help make the restoration decisions along the way.

17.01.2022 They were on their way to the dump (a pair), but I couldn't allow that. Not sure what the end result will be but it doesn't matter because there is still life left in them and it has to be better than the dump.

15.01.2022 All finished now... waxed and polished. We are spending a wee bit of time together in the office... a place to sit and contemplate in my quiet time. And I am very happy for her to spend some time with me. Remember, something looking lost, tired and a bit tatty, can always start afresh... We really do need to seriously consider that if it cannot be reduced, reused, repaired, rebuilt, refinished, resold, recycled or composted, then it should be restricted, redesigned or removed from production. Seriously, yes we should.... I am!

12.01.2022 It is Silky Oak but in need of a little tender loving care - which of course it will get. I am not sure yet, but it may be a candidate for something new - an adaptive reuse project... Stay tuned to see the possibilities...

08.01.2022 Staining completed and first coat of tung oil completed. I have put the iron frames back in but will be building some wooden frames over them as the base for the upholstery. The iron frames will be completely hidden by the upholstery. As Selena has already flagged, the type of upholstered finish will be the next big decision. Flat, puffy, buttoned, or, or, or?

07.01.2022 Found this lovely little davenport. It was sitting under a house in storage for years, so has a fair bit of dirt, grime and mould to be removed. The top piece sinks into the piece and is operated by a large lead weight. There are also lots of little secret drawers, storage compartments and interesting detail features. The whole piece just needs a little TLC to get all the moving parts working again, polish and wax. I think when it is finished, it will make someone very happy.

06.01.2022 Well, here she is, all finished. I think she looks beautiful, but then, I may be a little biased. I think at this stage of her life, she will be more decorative than a day-to-day user... maybe in a bedroom or as a feature piece. There is nothing wrong with sitting pretty and being admired... is there now?

04.01.2022 As I suspected, the timber underneath all of that dirt and dilapidated finish is something special. Still mulling over whether I will use the metal frames or try something different...

03.01.2022 Here is my latest musing - Ancient Symbols - The Triskelion https://www.donjonesantiques.com.au//Ancient-Symbols---The

03.01.2022 Spent the afternoon decompressing and what better way than to carve out an OM (OHM or AUM depending on the tradition) symbol in wood? The first mention of Om was in the Upanishads, more specifically the Mandukya Upishad, which is a sacred Hindu text that focuses on the different theories of the OM meaning. In this text, it says that Om is imperishable and that it is all states of time, past, present, future, as well as transcending time itself. These texts are associated wi...th Vedanta, one of the six Hindu philosophies, and the etymological aspects of the OM meaning are thoroughly discussed in the oldest Vedantic texts. They regard the meaning of the OM symbol as inexhaustible, infinite language and knowledge, and the essence everything that exists and of life itself. OM is a sacred sound that is known generally as the sound of the universe. OM is all encompassing, the essence of ultimate reality, and unifies everything in the universe. The elements of the OM Symbol is a combination of curves, a crescent and a dot. The meaning of the OM symbol, while purely looking at its visual form, comes from the states of consciousness that AUM represents. The letter 'A' represents the waking state, 'U' represents the dream state and 'M' is the unconscious state, or state of deep sleep. In the symbol, the waking state is represented by the bottom curve, the dream state is the middle curve and the state of deep sleep is represented with the upper curve. The crescent shape above the curves denotes Maya, or Illusion, which is the obstacle that sits in the way of reaching the highest state of bliss. The dot at the top of the symbol represents the absolute state, which is the fourth state of consciousness and is absolute peace and bliss. This fourth state is believed to be the state in which someone could truly connect with the Divine. The unconscious, or deep sleep, state is where the mind is shut down, dreaming and desiring of nothing. The waking state is general consciousness, looking outwards and involves the use of the five senses in experiencing the world. The dream state is when consciousness is turned inwards, and a different world is experienced through dreams. The absolute state is when consciousness faces neither inwards or outwards but is quiet and blissful in the ultimate spiritual state of being. So, just a quiet afternoon really.
