Tihar is also known as Deepawali in Nepal and is a 5 day long Hindu festival which is also celebrated in Indian states of Sikkim and West Bengal, particularly the towns of Darjeeling and Kalimpong. Darjeeling and Kalimpong host a large number of ethnic Nepali people. The 5 days of Tihar include celebration and worship of four creatures (Crow, Dog, Cow & Ox) associated with the Hindu god of death Yama. Tihar falls around October and... December every year which is also considered the best time to visit Nepal as the skies are generally clear and the views spectacular. Traditionally, the Sarangi was only played by people of Gandarbha who sing narrative tales and folk song, however, in present days, its popularity extends beyond the Gandharba community and is widely used and played by others. It has also garnered much interest in other music genres, such as Nepali rock and film music.
