24.01.2022 Parvovirus outbreak There has been a Parvovirus outbreak in Northern NSW that has been fatal and up to 60 puppies and dogs have passed away. The highly contagio...us virus is spread from dog to dog by direct or indirect contact with their faeces. The recent rain across the region seems to have brought on the outbreak. Scientific studies have shown an association between recent rain and parvo outbreaks. The greatest risk is for puppies that have not had their 16-week vaccination or are younger than 16 weeks and haven’t been vaccinated in the last month. To prevent infection, all puppies must be vaccinated monthly from six weeks of age, until 16 weeks (four months). Adult dogs in high-risk parvo areas and during outbreaks should be re-vaccinated every year.

22.01.2022 Spirit plans our departure to the other side including our beloved pets! No one passes alone! Nas a dear friend in Melbourne was stunned when she viewed her pho...tos that evening - taken in the morning to find this colour formation over her beloved Mr Fu. A rainbow bridge where our pets travel to the other side? Mr Fu was 14, his health had declined rapidly and the decision had been made to allow him to make his transition. Nas was keen to capture his lasting moments. He asked to go out the front and just looked into the garden where she took this photo of his second last day with her! Reassurance comes when we see ‘signs’ of this nature spirit is with us and preparing the next journey in the afterlife!

14.01.2022 If you haven’t loved, lived with, or worked with a reactive dog, sometimes it’s difficult to empathize with them. I often see people suggesting that if your dog... is reactive, that it shouldn’t be out in public or it should be trained more. Every time I read something like that, it’s a little twist of the knife to the heart. I can attest to the fact that most reactive dog handlers are putting loads of time into their dog’s training and are working diligently to help keep their dog under threshold. For those who aren’t familiar with reactive dogs, here’s a quick rundown. These dogs are triggered by a stimulus in the environment (it could be noise, other dogs, people, etc.) and have an emotional response to it. The response can be driven by so many factors, but the most common are fear or frustration. Since these dogs are leashed and don’t usually have the option of retreating, they tend to explode with emotion. Those instances can look like barking, lunging, growling. It’s stressful for the dog and the human. These dogs still deserve to get outside! We want to normalize ignoring a dog until getting permission from the owner to interact. Here are a few hints for spotting someone working with a reactive dog. They are the ones who quietly step off the trail with their dog to create space. They cross the street to avoid an interaction that their dog isn’t ready for. They are the ones who handing treats to their dog, in an out of the way area. For all you folks with reactive dogs: We see you! We know all you’re doing to help your dog feel safe and to show you just how much we care, we’ll ignore your dog. #ignoremydog #reactivedogsofinstagram #reactivedogs #underthresholddogtraining #positivedogtraining #keepyourdogsafe #alldogsareindividuals #getyourdogwalking #weseeyou

07.01.2022 "He's afraid of X, so he must have been abused by/with X." In rescue, a lot of dogs come into care with unknown histories. Many of these dogs present with speci...fic or generalized fear and anxiety. It can be easy - so, SO easy - to attach a story to their behaviour. In fact, it's becoming increasingly common for people to adopt dogs BECAUSE of their story. The more tragic, the better. The problem with this is that it tends to freeze dogs into their neuroses. Their owner becomes so attached to the story, so emotionally invested, that they themselves cannot move past it. When the owner gets stuck, so does the dog. Then the story becomes an excuse. He's aggressive to the postman because one must have abused him. He's leash reactive to other dogs because he was a 'bait dog'. He runs from us when we grab the fly swat because someone has hit him with it. In most cases, these behaviours are caused from a lack of experience in the critical period of socialization. Their inexperience can present itself as fear, anxiety, stress and aggression; mechanisms they develop over time to cope. But what exactly caused their rescued dogs behaviour is irrelevant. It's a fools errand to try to figure it out; an addictive oxytocin-fueled quest to justify a lack of action. He's afraid of men? Make men = good things. He runs from the fly swatter? Pick the damn thing up and throw the dog a handful of steak a few times. See what happens. When we adopt a dog, we're making a commitment to BETTER their life. Holding on to their past is doing the opposite. Show them they're in a better place by overcoming their problems, not nurturing them.
