23.01.2022 This is good news..."Communications Minister Paul Fletcher said the telecommunications industry and the Australian Communications and Media Authority were already working with the government to stop the growing number of overseas calls pretending to be from organisations like the NBN or ATO. "They will be using software and technology within their networks to identify these calls and seek to block them before they get to the customer," he told Today. "It's already started is... to reduce the number of calls coming into Australian homes." Mr Fletcher said the next stage would focus on Wangiri scams - Japanese for one ring and drop. "You get one ring on your phone from an overseas number. You pick up the phone to call back and it's a premium rate number that you're being directed to, so you end up being charged a lot of money," he explained." See more

22.01.2022 The AFP and NSW Police Force have charged a Sydney man for allegedly using multiple SIM boxes to send tens of thousands of SMS phishing attacks aka smishing s...cams to access bank accounts and steal money. The scale of the attacks in this investigation was extreme! One telecommunications provider identifying more than 49,000 messages sent to its customers within the span of one week, and in one instance more than $30,000 was stolen from a single customer. There is every chance you or someone you know has received a SMS from this particular scam. If you get a text prompting you for your personal and banking details, don’t respond! Your bank won’t text you asking for your username, PIN, password, to confirm personal details or request on the spot payments. Further investigations remain ongoing with financial industry partners to determine the exact extent of the fraudulent activity. Read more here: ow.ly/F3S650Bzywl

13.01.2022 There have been some problems with Bigpond email..

10.01.2022 Our beloved Windows 7 has almost reached the end of it's life with Microsoft officially retiring it in January 2020. It will still work after this date but Microsoft will not be releasing any security updates for it from that point. New computers come with Windows 10 as standard and also many windows 7 and 8 updated to Windows 10 during 2017 when Microsoft made it a free update. It is still available for free using Windows media creation tool for Windows 7 and 8 computers. Breathe new life into your desktop or laptop with a check, clean-up and Windows 10 installation for $80 ...Computer MUST be loading Windows 7 or 8 fine (XP or Vista is not applicable). Add a new faster SSD for extra.

10.01.2022 Another scam email...

08.01.2022 I know it can sound condescending or flippant when told to restart your computer/tablet/Ipad/modem/phone/smart tv/printer when having problems, but it really does fix so many glitches. It should really be the first thing you try when having any frustrations with your device. Lesson learned yesterday after spending an hour trying to fix an MMS problem on a smartphone when a simple restart magically solved it. My phone restarts regularly because I forget to charge it but many organised people may never restart their phone! Restarting clears the memory on the devices and allows updates etc. so restart your devices weekly.

01.01.2022 Scam page "giving away" consoles.. Only created hours ago and already 37000 people have been tricked into handing over their full names and mobile numbers, along with personal stories and kids names, then sharing the post to invite their friends and family to do the same. Edit: a few hours later it's up to 72000 shares and victims.

01.01.2022 They're professional scammers, they see an opportunity and will milk it for all they can. Their eyes have lit up at opportunities they see with the Corona virus.... With government departments sending out emergency payments to many in the community, these people are frantically ringing phones at random: "I'm from the government / Centrelink / Medicare / your bank," they say. "We want to send your payment but first need to verify your Medicare / Centrelink / bank account details /passwords." Please be aware: Government departments already have your details. Government departments don't ring people at random. If you're one of the many who get these calls - just hang up. If you've already had one and passed on personal information or passwords, before you do anything else, contact your bank or relevant government department and let them know. Importantly, get the number from the bank or department's internet site. Do not use a link or phone number given by someone else. As well. report identity theft to ID Care: www.IDcare.org or call 1300 432 273. Please share if you can.
