24.01.2022 Why is this even being considered?! Fracking poisons our waterways, destroys the land, fuels climate change and is bad for literally *everyone* involved except for climate-wrecking gas corporations The Greens that are the only party opposed to fracking and are calling for a complete ban in WA LINK IN COMMENTS to add your voice to the petition... https://www.watoday.com.au//us-owned-resource-company-goes
23.01.2022 We won't get real action on the climate crisis until we stop big mining, gas and fossil fuel companies donating to political parties. The greatest tragedy of the climate crisis is that seven and a half billion people must pay the price in the form of a degraded planet so that a couple of dozen big polluters can continue to make record profits. These donations are corrupting our democracy here in WA.
21.01.2022 Please join this important conversation on National Treaty with Senator Lidia Thorpe
17.01.2022 #16DayOfActivism: DAY 15 TW: escaping violence, financial abuse The Government’s bill to make the Cashless Debit Card permanent and extend the policy to the Northern Territory is being debated in the Senate today. It will be put to a vote tonight. ... The Cashless Debit Card is a form of compulsory income management that quarantines 80% of an income support recipient’s payment to a card that leaves them with just 20% available in cash. The Cashless Debit Card is retraumatising for survivors of family and domestic violence, as the policy of limiting access to cash largely mimics the controlling behaviour of an abuser. The Cashless Debit Card also makes it harder for people who are experiencing violence at home to escape as survivors need a wide variety of resources to successfully leave an abusive partner. One of the resources survivors will need is access to money or financial resources for transportation, childcare, employment, food, clothing, housing, healthcare and insurance. Due to the card restrictions, people on the cashless card are unable to access cash economics to buy secondhand goods or goods from community markets. People also routinely report their struggle with having rental payments approved or being paid on time. People have been subjected to this social experiment for far too long and it’s impacting on their dignity, quality of life, and mental health. https://www.sbs.com.au//emotions-rise-as-senators-debate-t
15.01.2022 #16DaysOfActivism: Day 8 One of the most impactful ways the State Government can address family and domestic violence is by addressing the housing crisis. Here in WA we have more than 9,000 people experiencing homelessness every night (and growing) and nearly 24,000 people on the public housing waitlist.... Addressing family and domestic violence in WA means: building enough public housing funding culturally-sensitive frontline services to address the root causes of homelessness like mental health, substance abuse and family and domestic violence reforming WA's child protection system building more crisis accommodation to get people off the streets
14.01.2022 This is so disappointing. Shipping people off to hotels for one week is not a solution to homelessness. The handling of WA’s fourth tent city makes it clear the McGowan Government has no plan to address WA's growing housing crisis. Out-of-sight out-of-mind and blaming vulnerable people does nothing to help the problem. Part of the much-wanted surplus that this government has ‘achieved’ has been through the sale of social housing. ... Of course that is the kind of thing that the State Government would never tell you but, unfortunately for the McGowan Labor Government, the housing numbers don’t lie. "The state government has only added 24 social housing properties in total to its stock in the past year and estimates only 47 more will be added in the next four years while 24,000 people sit on the waitlist." https://www.watoday.com.au//fremantle-tent-city-homeless-s

13.01.2022 Senator Rachel Siewert has worked tirelessly for the community throughout her almost fifteen years in the senate. Her commitment and passion for social justice and making sure the community is heard in Parliament is an inspiration to me. Vote now for Rach in Pro Bono Australia's Impact 25 awards which recognise those dedicated to positive social change. ... https://www.pbaimpact.com/
07.01.2022 #16DaysOfActivism: DAY 9 Family and domestic violence is a major driver of young people becoming homeless. Over half of young people experiencing homelessness leave home due to violence within their families. 1 in 6 homeless kids have run away from home more than ten (!!) times due to family violence. Some of these kids are as young as 9 years old. ... A key part of addressing family and domestic violence is supporting young people in crisis. In WA, this means the state government must invest in building adequate crisis housing stock for young people affected by family and domestic violence.
07.01.2022 TW: Police Violence #16DayOfActivism: DAY 13 But while family violence itself might now be a frontline political issue, its police perpetrators and the fact that they mostly get away with it remains hidden behind layers of denial.... This is an incredibly disturbing report and clearly shows the depths of the family violence epidemic. Perpetrators are found in every part of our community and in every institution. Police forces need expert detectives to handle cases involving police, as well as oversight from well-resourced independent watchdogs. Police who cover up their colleagues' violence or mishandle cases also need to be held accountable. https://www.smh.com.au//hidden-crisis-when-your-domestic-a
05.01.2022 Australia recently received international criticism for its low minimum age of criminal responsibility (10 years old), one of the lowest in the world. No child should be in prison and it's time the McGowan Government acted on the very clear evidence and raised the age of criminal responsibility to at least 14 years. It's time to #RaiseTheAge.
04.01.2022 Tomorrow is Invasion Day. Invasion day is a day of mourning for the violence that took place during colonisation and a day of mourning for the colonisation and structural, state sanctioned violence against First Nations peoples perpetuated through our legal, political and social systems that continues to this day. It is a day to acknowledge the survival of First Nations peoples in spite of the horrors inflicted on us during colonisation. ... Black history should not be hidden or lied about. For Australia to heal itself as a nation we must recognise, respect and honour first peoples by telling the real story. As a proud First Nations woman I want to be able to wake on January 26 with joy in my heart that truth and justice have been achieved, the stories of pain and grief respected and the mistakes learnt from, that we should never repeat these acts from our history towards our fellow Australians. We can get there but we need our community to come together. I invite everyone in our community to join us in solidarity with First Nations people and join us in this movement for justice that is so long overdue. bit.ly/3c7vnWh
02.01.2022 BUSHFIRE EMERGENCY INFORMATION FOR DISABLED PEOPLE IN WA My team have spoken with DFES this afternoon, and the following information is correct: IF YOU A...RE IN THE RED ZONE You MUST ring 000 now. You absolutely have permission to call 000 and hold the line until you speak to somebody. According to DFES, if you have any disability that impacts your movement away from the fire and you are in the red zone, you MUST call 000 so that evacuation can be arranged. IF YOU ARE IN THE YELLOW/ORANGE ZONE You must reach out to a neighbour, family member, carer, or other support person to assist you to make your exit from the area. Do not wait. Once you are in the red zone, support may not be able to reach out. It’s really important that you evacuate as soon as possible. If you cannot reach or do not have access to support, call 000.
