23.01.2022 Foster Mum Success. Managed to get this ewe to accept an abandoned ewe lamb. She lost her ram lamb at birth. Happy that she will have a little friend this season and I don’t have to bottle feed. ... Tips. 1. Lock the ewe and lamb up in close confinement. 2. If possible get some of the afterbirth from the ewe that lost the lamb and rub it on the orphan lamb. I also draped a few pieces of the sack over the lambs head and neck. 3. Restrain the ewe and allow the lamb to find the teat and learn to suck. 4. Repeat the restrained feeding method every few hours. 5. At the end of the feed release the restraint on the ewe and give her the opportunity to allow the lamb to continue feeding. 6. Some kicking and pushing is ok. Once the lamb knows where the milk is it will be determined to get back. Just make sure the lambs welfare is not at risk if serious violence breaks out. 7. Keep ewe and lamb in close containment between feeds until they bond. 8. Once bonded allow the pair to roam a small holding pen. 9. Monitor and ensure unrestricted feeding is occurring. 10. Release back into the heard and monitor. If any undesirable behaviour is observed then take them back to the holding pen. Good luck. It isn’t easy but worth the reward.
