25.01.2022 As the dust settles from the simulated earthquake for the Major Exercise Assessment component of the course, The Natural Disasters and Humanitarian team would l...ike to congratulate the 24 participants for successfully completing the course and are now a part of the Disaster Assistance Response Team. The assessment phase of the Urban Search and Rescue Technician Course was conducted through a major exercise at the Fire and Rescue NSW Emergency Services Academy from the 21st 23rd September. The exercise tested the skills of all operators on all aspects of what a USAR Technician could potentially encounter whilst on deployment. Whilst the skills will increase our International Capability through our United Nations accredited team AUS-2, the skillsets will also be taken back to the local commands and fire stations across NSW enhancing our domestic capability. 23.01.2022 What is happening? The Bureau of Meteorology issued an initial MINOR flood warning for the Bellinger River at Thora and Bellingen at 1:34 am EDT on Sunday 9 Feb...ruary 2020. MINOR FLOODING EXPECTED AT THORA AND BELLINGEN ON SUNDAY MORNING Minor flooding of the Bellinger River at Thora and Bellingen is expected on Sunday morning. Moderate rainfall has been recorded across the Bellinger River catchment in the past 24 hours, with further heavy rainfall forecast over the next 24 hours. A Severe Weather Warning is current for the Northern Rivers. River Height Predictions Minor flooding is expected along the Bellinger River on Sunday at: Thora - is expected to exceed the minor flood level (3.00 metres) Sunday morning. Further rises are possible with forecast rain Bellingen Bridge - is expected to exceed the minor flood level (3.70 metres) Sunday morning. Further rises are possible with forecast rain What we are expecting: Based on the prediction provided by the Bureau of Meteorology it is expected the following areas will be impacted by dangerous floodwaters: In the Thora/Darkwood area: 3.00m - Darkwood Road may be closed at Hobarts Bridge, isolating residents upstream of the bridge. 3.50m- Joyces Bridge may close. In Bellingen: 3.70m - Farmland downstream of Bellingen may begin to inundate. What you need to do: It is likely that evacuation routes from Darkwood will be impacted and impassable once the river exceeds 3.0 metres at the Thora gauge. 19.01.2022 When you’re fighting fires on the front line, having access to water is crucial, however, Australia’s drought has limited water supply for firefighters. RRT’s R...apid Water System (RWS) pumps hard to reach water to a location near the fire front and can fill 4 firetrucks in less than 3 minutes. RWS recently supported firefighters at the Gospers Mountain fires, and we’re incredibly grateful for the Jenkins family who generously allowed us to pump water from an old open cut mine which was flooded in the 1930s on their property! @TurnerandCentralCraneServices #rrt #bushfires #RWS See more

19.01.2022 VERY HIGH Fire Danger Rating continues for tomorrow, Saturday 26 September. Fire permits remain suspended until Sunday, when conditions are expected to ease. For updates on Fire Danger Rating please visit www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fire-information/fdr-and-tobans.

19.01.2022 Keeping cosy by an outdoor fire this long weekend? Ensure your fire pit is located downwind and a safe distance from flammable materials. If you are cooking over an open fire, never leave your cooking unattended or without adult supervision. #PreparedForAnything #ProtectTheIrreplaceable

19.01.2022 Your swimming pool could have a bigger purpose this summer! 19.01.2022 Fire crews from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 020 Hurstville assisted by the Hazmat team from Alexandria responded to an emergency call regarding a mercury spill ...from a broken thermometer in a Hurstville home overnight. Crews attended the premises in full PPE and breathing apparatus where they found a person self-isolating due to a recent trip from China. The attending crews cleaned up the spill and rendered the area safe. While the situation was managed safely and appropriately by the attending fire and HAZMAT crews, this is a timely reminder for anyone seeking the assistance of Emergency Services to advise us if you are self-isolating when making a call for assistance. #FRNSW #COVID19 #PreparedForAnything #MoreThanFire #ProtectTheIrreplaceable #HAZMAT

18.01.2022 COVID - 19 UPDATE There are a few changes that have taken place with the way Fire and Rescue NSW operates that you notice. We hope you understand and can help u...s through the next few weeks. Some if the changes include: We are cancelling all non essential community engagements so we won't be able to visit your school or childcare centre to pass on fire safety messages for a while. If you visit a fire station for any non life threatening issues we are not going to be able to let you in. You may notice fire trucks at emergencies with fire fighters sitting inside. We are minimising the amount of fire fighters contact with the community. If you see us sitting in our fire trucks and not getting out this is not us being rude. Feel free to give us a way from a distance we'll still wave back. We wont be able to show your kids our fire truck and let them sit in it for a while. And unfortunatly we won't be able to shake you hands for a while. Behind the scenes we are doing a lot of hard work to continously decontaminate our trucks, uniforms and fire stations to ensure us and our community are protected. Thanks for the support we could not do this without everyones support. #covid-19

15.01.2022 Our thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of the Victorian Police tonight.

15.01.2022 **A message from Commissioner Paul Baxter** It is with great sadness that I announce the death of Fire and Rescue NSW’s first commissioner, Commissioner Ian Mac...Dougall, AFSM, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 82. Ian joined Fire and Rescue NSW in 1994 after a long career with the Royal Australian Navy. Ian rose through the ranks of the Navy achieving rank of Vice Admiral before stepping into the Commissioner’s role. He spent almost 10 years with FRNSW and was able to modernise the department by upgrading our communications and technology to ensure we were equipped for the future. During his time at FRNSW, Ian was appointed President of the Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council. Ian will be dearly missed by everyone at FRNSW and we extend our condolences to all his family and friends. May he rest in peace.

14.01.2022 **A message from our Commissioner Paul Baxter** Today, we are grieving with Coulson Aviation - Next Gen Firefighting as they mourn the loss of Captain Ian H McB...eth, First Officer Paul Clyde Hudson, and Flight Engineer Rick A. DeMorgan Jr who were tragically killed during firefighting operations yesterday afternoon. Our hearts go out to the families, friends and colleagues of the three crew members of the C130 bomber 134. Coulson’s aircraft have been a common sight in our skies during our bushfire crisis and have made so much difference to our firefighters on the ground. As a mark of mourning and respect, flags will be flown at half-mast today from all Fire and Rescue NSW buildings. 13.01.2022 HOUSE FIRE TRAGEDY: As part of our job we attend many incidents where no matter how hard we work we witness injury and loss of property however the worst we at...tend is the loss of life. This sadly was the case earlier this morning when crews arrived to find a house on Scaysbrook Ave on fire in Kincumber. The first arriving crew from kincumber immediately entered the building and was shortly followed by crews from terrigal. A 13 year old girl was found and removed from the burning building however could not be resuscitated. As the local station we really feel for the family and friends of the girl. We will share any local fundraiser pages once they’re setup.

12.01.2022 As the COVID-19 pandemic changes the way we go about our lives, our firefighters and support staff continue to ensure we remain prepared for anything. You may see our firefighters wearing a mask, we'd appreciate it if you could also wear yours if we visit your home or workplace.

12.01.2022 MODERATE TO MAJOR FLOOD WARNING - #THORA, #BELLINGER - 9:30PM, Thursday 13th February ... Heavy rainfall has been recorded across the Bellinger catchment since Wednesday afternoon, which has caused rapid river level rises at Thora and Bellingen. Moderate flooding is currently occurring at Thora with rises to the major flood level possible Thursday night. Minor flooding is current at Bellingen with rises to the moderate flood level possible overnight. THORA - The Bellinger River at Thora may reach the major flood level (5.80 m) overnight Thursday into Friday. 11.01.2022 Solar panels are a very popular addition to homes, however fires involving solar panels have increased dramatically- almost 80% in the last five years. Solar pa...nels were found to be the cause of four fires in the last week alone and are up more than 20% from this time last year, with solar isolation switches causing almost half of all solar panel-related fires. NSW residents can play their part in ensuring solar panels are as safe as possible by making sure their solar panel system complies with Australian standards and using a qualified installer. It's always a good idea to do a license check with NSW Fair Trading before any work takes place. Remember, calling Triple Zero (000) for a fire emergency can be the difference between life and death, or a building or other property being saved or destroyed. For more information on solar panel safety, visit the Fair Trading website here: https://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au//during-th/solar-panels
