25.01.2022 We often hear: There were no warning signs, it came out of nowhere, the other dog was just trying to play ... then the dog just attacked. There are so many laye...rs to communication, body language, social etiquette and socialization with dogs that are not carefully monitored enough by people. To provide an example of an overly friendly dog I let Sheena pester Elke the German Shepherd for a few extra minutes and get on her nerves (this is not something we generally allow). Even after being corrected, if I had not stepped in to help reinforce, Sheena was immediately ready to go right back to pushing Elkes buttons. Often times we see not as friendly or neutral dogs blamed for "starting" something with a puppy or younger dog when they we just trying to play ! More often than not it is the playful pups behavior that causes the conflict! Too often people will bring dogs together and just let them work it out on their own and things go south quickly. Or allow the friendly dog to pester and push buttons unrelentingly. Dog parks, dog daycare, play dates, family visits / gatherings, bringing a new dog or puppy into the home, etc etc. Dogs can quickly go from tolerating to becoming defensive/offensive when they realize no one else will help curb the unwanted, pushy behavior of the friendly dog . We will sometimes allow a dog to correct or be corrected, but a majority of the time I step in to take control and responsibility so that all the dogs understand I will help. I dont want neutral dogs to feel like they have to correct, correct, correct and will be allowed to act as other dogs punching bags or fearful dogs to be bullied into self defense and over reacting. Especially this holiday season when families will be getting together to celebrate (and perhaps including canine companions) it is important to take responsibility and help neutralize pushy behavior so our dogs dont have to play sheriff. Help break up potential conflicts and DONT just let them work it out.
25.01.2022 This dog is living his best life...

22.01.2022 Are you thinking of buying a doodle, or Cockapoo, or any Poodle cross? Have you got one of these puppies and been told they dont need grooming until they are ...a year old, or that their coat maintenance is easy? If so please read this. (The original post was written by an unknown groomer but I have edited it quite a lot! Please feel free to share.) Poodle crosses (cockapoos, doodles, maltipoos etc.) are not "easy breeds" to maintain. The photo attached (shared from another groomer) shows how matting forms at the skin. By looking at this dogs top coat, you may not see the knots and you may not feel them as you would a knot on the ends of the fur but under that fluffy top layer this is going on. Once it starts its very difficult/ impossible to brush out... and even if you could it would be cruel to put the dog through it. Maintenance at home has to be more than a quick once over for these dogs if you want to keep them in that fluffy coat which was probably one of the reasons you chose a poodle cross in the first place. You really need to sit down with a brush and then a metal comb and make sure you can get it through the entire body at least 2 to 3 times a week. I often feel like owners dont believe groomers when they say their dog has to be clipped very short. I always hear "I know he/she is matted, but leave as much as you can". You cannot clip through matting, you can only clip under it. As this photo shows, clipping under the matting means taking the coat back to the skin. I promise you, your groomer really doesnt want to do this but they wont hurt your dog by putting it through dematting, they also dont want to hurt their reputation when the clients go around complaining about how the last groomer "scalped" their dog but there really is not any alternative. Instead of being angry with your groomer if they clip your dog very short please respect their commitment to do what is in your dogs best interest, accept responsibility for not having brushed your dog properly at home, and work with your groomer because, together, you can prevent this happening again. All groomers will be very happy to demonstrate a technique called line brushing which will help make your grooming at home more effective. Just ask! We all want owners to know how to do this Poodle crosses are easily one of the highest maintenance dogs in reference to their coats. The combination of the soft coat they are mixing poodles with these days is a coat that is extremely prone to matting. If you like a fluffy pup, you probably need to consider no more than 3-5 week intervals between grooming and set aside time for regular brushing AND combing at home. Please know, if you bathe your poodle cross you really need to blow dry and brush out right after. Moisture, be it a bath, rain, swimming, snow etc are all going to make matting worse. If you know your dog is already matted-- bathing is only going to make it worse! Brush out before the bath. Lastly "breeders" who say these dogs cant or shouldnt be clipped and not to give them a hair cut until they are one year old are misleading potential owners in order to sell puppies and setting them up for a sad day when they finally take their pup to the groomer. If this hasnt put you off buying one please schedule your puppys first groom immediately after theyve had their vaccinations and then be prepared to do the maintenance at home between regular professional grooms.

17.01.2022 Do you see what I see? This picture could very well be the precursor to a bite. Maybe not that day, but at some point. Most people don't see their dogs' discomf...ort in this type of situation. Most people think it's cute when babies and dogs interact. Most times nothing remarkable or tragic happens. But let me tell you what I see. -the whites of the dog's eyes -the dog's ears pinned back -tense "grin", tense corners of the lips pulled back -head turned watchfully -tension in the neck and shoulders -front legs in a position that would enable a quick push toward baby's face -panting -the adult sitting relaxed and smiling, thinking they are "supervising", obviously unaware that if this dog snaps at the baby, it will be too quick for them to do anything but feel guilty on the way to the ER afterward. Don't get me wrong. I do think kids should be able to have animals. I grew up with animals. The vast majority situations just like this one will pass without incident. But situations like this is how kids get bitten. Situations like this is how beloved family dogs get taken to the vet for euthanasia because they bit "without warning". Dogs who have bitten someone, especially a kid, will almost never be rehomed. It's generally a death sentence for them. Which isn't fair. It isn't fair to the kid who has no idea how uncomfortable they are making that dog. And it's not fair to the dog, who was probably trying to be a "good dog", who was probably screaming with their body language that they are absolutely uncomfortable with the situation. But when they are pushed past their limit, it is the kid left with life long scars, and it is the dog who will likely end up dead. People always think their own dog would "never do such a thing". But it happens. It happens more than you know. If you are going to have kids and dogs (or any animal) learn to read that animal's body language. Invest the time to keep the kids safe, and the dog happy and alive. And obviously teach the kids to interact appropriately and with care. And learn not to cross thresholds you may never be able to uncross. #PSA #veterinaryPSA See more
17.01.2022 Dog Poisoned by the Diffuser Saturday night I got home late and my dog didn't recognize me. Being a nanny I thought I woke him up and he was having a night terr...or. Sunday, he was still acting weird. I realized that I had been running my new diffuser and decided to turn it off. Sunday afternoon, he was feeling better. Today at work, my dog sitter said that he wouldn't come out from under the bed. It was very odd as he is a happy dog. I came from work early and again, he was very confused about who I was. So I took him to emergency vet. It turns out that the tea tree oil I was using in the diffuser is toxic for dogs. Thankfully the test showed that his liver was ok but we weren't out of the woods yet. He was given fluids under his skin to get the toxins out. The vet and the poison control are saying that they see these cases often now that the popularity of essential oil is growing. Please make sure that the essential oils you are burning are not toxic for your pets. Here is a list of essential oils not to use if you have a dog at home Anise (Pimpinella anisum) Birch (Betula) Bitter Almond (Prunus dulcis) Boldo (Peumus boldus) Calamus (Acorus calamus) Camphor (Cinnamomum camphora) Cassia (Cassia fistula) Chenopodium (Chenopodium album) Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) Garlic (Allium sativum) Goosefoot (Chenopodium murale) Horseradish (Armoracia rusticana) Hyssop (Hyssopus sp. with the exception of Decumbens) Juniper (Juniperus sp. with the exception of Juniper Berry) Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) Mustard (Brassica juncea) Oregano (Origanum vulgare) Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium) Red or White Thyme Rue (Ruta graveolens) Santolina (Santolina chamaecyparissus) Sassafras (Sassafras albidum) Savory (Satureja) Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) Terebinth (Pistacia palaestina) Thuja (Thuja occidentalis) Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) Please share this story as it may save someones precious furry family member!

09.01.2022 Working at the animal shelter, we hear all different reasons why people need to surrender their pets to us. Moving, allergies, frequently escaping from the home..., divorce, etc. But when it comes down to surrendering a heeler (Australian Cattle Dog), its almost the exact same reason every time. Hes biting us Being very nippy He keeps chasing my kids and biting their ankles Too mouthy, and getting rough Going after people and/or other animals These photos (credit to Jeff Jaquish) show exactly why the dog is displaying this behavior. They are bred to work. They are bred to herd and handle large livestock, even the mean, nasty ones. Not all cows are nice and go where you want. They are bred to bite. So you take this fluffy cute puppy, raise it in a pet home and not provide any drive satisfaction, that breeds genetic make up of specific desires and needs come out. One way or another. Biting, destruction, running away. Research the breed before you commit. Know what individual breeds are bred to do, and within those breeds know what breeders breed for in traits because there are so many degrees of traits within a breed standard. Pet home vs working dog. (Note: pet homes still have variations of drive levels.) And if you dont have cows, or able to provide the sole purpose that dog was bred to do (hunting, racing, detection), give it another type of job (dog sports for example) that can satisfy the dog mentally and physically. Plus train, train, train! Most importantly, its a life time commitment, so make it a happy one for you and your dog by getting to know your dogs world better. Update: my post is in regards of dog behavior, genetics and drive satisfaction. Im not saying if a dog bites or mouths its meaning the dog is aggressive. In addition, a dog with working traits can still make a good family dog when their needs are met. Also if you own a dog that bites, seek a professional to determine the underlying reason. (Feel free to share!)
