17.01.2022 Would you like to see this ship pull into Yamba? CRUISE COMPANY ADVERTISES YAMBA STOP A UK-based company is advertising an ocean cruise that includes a stop at ...Yamba. The website for Noble Caledonia offers places on an Australian Coastal Odyssey which departs from Thursday Island in October next year. The 90-metre-long Caledonia Sky will sail for 22 nights down Australia's east coast at a cost of more than $19,000 each for about 100 passengers. One of the destinations listed is the north coast port of Yamba, but the state's Port Authority says there is no confirmed booking for the ship. The ABC is seeking comment from the company. The prospect of Yamba being used as a cruise ship destination has been debated since the idea was floated as part of a state transport plan last month. The issue is currently being explored by the Clarence Valley Council. Spokesman Des Schroeder said the council would tomorrow consider the Yamba Port's potential as a destination for small cruise ships. "What the council is saying, they should be boutique ships," he said. "We don't think we can handle great big ships with a couple of thousand people on board, we're talking the small boutique cruise ships. "Yamba is a port, we've got a tug etcetera. "The actual maximum depth there at high tide is round about six maybe six-and-a-half metres. "So potentially [smaller cruise ships] could come into the port of Yamba." Yamba resident Judith Melville said there had been little consultation with the community about opening the port to cruise vessels. "Enough people are beginning to express their views and one of the things that concerns the community there has been no feasibility study of whether a cruise ship industry could be accomodated in the estuary," she said. "There's been no business case presented, there's been no community consultation with the communities that would be most affected."
16.01.2022 (This is an emotive issue - please keep your comments respectful and not personal) LOCAL MP FEARS 'DYSTOPIAN WORLD' WHERE GOVERNMENTS DECIDE WHO CAN DIE A north... coast MP says experience in the US shows suicide rates could climb if voluntary euthanasia was made legal. A bill that would have allowed terminally ill patients over the age of 25 to end their own lives with the help of doctors was defeated in the Upper House last night. After a marathon debate 20 MPs voted against the bill, while 19 voted in favour. Liberal MLC Catherine Cusack said she had several reasons for voting against the bill. "I suppose I'm one of those who fear a dystopian world in terms of government trying to define who should die and who should not die," she said. "The bill that we debated last night is modelled on the Oregon Bill. "I was really shocked when I read about what's happened to suicide rates in Oregon. "They're 47 per cent higher than the national average."

Kyogle Mayor Danielle Mulholland said the latest award at the 2017 Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia Excellence Awards, shows Council's ingenuity and commitment to the environment.
13.01.2022 FACELIFT FOR POTTSVILLE PRIMARY WHILE WAIT CONTINUES FOR HIGH SCHOOL The Pottsville Primary School is set to get a $5 million facelift. The State Government is ...calling for tenders to replace 13 demountable classrooms with permanent facilities. Tweed MP Geoff Provest sais it was part of a four-year, $4.2 billion school building program announced in the 2017-18 State Budget. He said it was also recognition that population growth in the area was permanent. "As populations grow, a way to satisfy that remand is to move demountables," Mr Provest said. "Those demountables aren't being pulled down by the way, they're actually moved to other schools. "We monitor five years in advance what we estimate student numbers to be, and then allocate capital expenditure accordingly." There has been a long-running campaign for a new high school in the area. Mr Provest said it would happen, but the time was still not right. "Pottsville will eventually get a high school," he said. "Now we only had a visit from the head department demographers last week, [and] the need for a new high school isn't quite there at the moment."
