25.01.2022 Last week I had negative feedback on my first draft. Id missed the mark (a little bit). I was glum about it. If I dont get a you nailed it on my drafts thats a fail in my book. So I stewed for bit, then owned it. Luckily for me, the client was very clear about the feedback. That makes all the difference. When I get a make it pop or I dont like this its frustrating. Vague feedback is nigh-impossible to address. But this feedback? Crystal clear. Fix two elements. One was the tone. The other was more emphasis on a particular brand strength. Feedback like that? I can work with it. So this week, Ill be beavering away to get this second draft absolutely positively, beautifully perfect for my client. I wont rest till I get a love this its perfect. Fingers crossed.
23.01.2022 One thing that annoys me? (Besides adverts that BUTCHER classic songs to sell products.) Its bad blogging advice. Recently I had a potential client ask me: Ive heard that SEO agencies write blog posts that are not well written, they are just for SEO purposes and they are hidden on your website. ... Ugh. How very 2001. Kate Toon taught me to write for humans first, Google second. That means good quality, well written, interesting helpful blogs that you happily post on your website, not hide in a corner. Say NO to crappily written blogs.
21.01.2022 Im gonna delete my blog. Nooooo! I yelled. This was during one of my website audits. The client had a great blog full of useful content. ... He was afraid he was giving away his expert advice too freely. Why would anyone book his services when they could get his advice free in his blog? It makes sense, right? But weirdly, it works the other way. The more expert tips you share on your blog, the more your customers trust you. You dont have to persuade people you know your stuff. You prove it. So be unfailingly generous in your advice. And kiss goodbye the limiting belief that not sharing your insights protects you in some way. Worried about competitors copying? All the better reason to have a strong tone of voice, so they cant steal your stuff without being shown for the copycats they are. Plus, your blog will outrank them on all the important search terms. Nice.
21.01.2022 Have you seen Nats What I Reckon videos? Hes this hilarious tattooed guy who posts cooking videos. He swears up a shitstorm. During lockdown, hes become proper internet famous. In every video, he talks about how he really, very much indeed hates packet, processed food. ... His rants are too funny. And it gave me an idea. Could you get yourself a little of his magic by talking about what you stand against? (Swearing optional.) Maybe youre a graphic designer who hates curated Instagram feeds. Maybe youre a nutritionist who hates the keto fad diet. Maybe youre a baby sleep coach who hates controlled crying. Its important to talk about what you stand FOR. Its just as important to talk about what you stand AGAINST. Have you made that clear enough in your branding? Does it shine through in your website, socials and emails? Think about what you stand against and start talking about it.
21.01.2022 How do you get good at something? Anything at all? You do it over and over again. Ive been writing for business since I got my first job in PR in 1997. So, along the way, I got good at it.... Meanwhile, I cant ride a bike. Well I can, but Im always super nervous, and Id rather be at home with a hot chocolate. Sometimes I take on little writing jobs and I find it so easy I dont value it much. It didnt take me long, so it must not be worth much, right? I forget that it doesnt take me long because I got very good at writing very fast. It only took me 20 years of daily practice. So thats worth *more* right? (Writing this to remind myself, really)

20.01.2022 Back in the pre-covid days, I visited my daughter's class to talk about my job as a writer. I was crapping on about all the important things: do what you love, I help people, blah, blah. The kids were SO bored.... So teacher nudged everyone to ask questions. Clearly the questions were pre-prepared. Then one kid asked: What was your first job? Hungry Jacks (I told him). Well. I had them . They were transfixed. I told them all about making Whoppers, Bacon Deluxes and Grilled Chickens. I told them about the cleaning the sundae machine at night and helping myself to soft serve. It was the best fun. Until. A kid asked: I was there last week - were you there too? (Clearly not listening to the whole bit about being a writer, were you buddy?) I explained that I worked there in the 1990s. For fun, I asked: who was around in 1992? Duh, I knew the seven-year-olds weren't born then, obvs. But not even the TEACHER. Even the teacher was not born in 1992 when I started flipping flame-grilled Whoppers at Hungry Jacks. I am SO old.
20.01.2022 Last week I spotted a copywriting job that caught my eye. Someone was looking for an air conditioner specialist copywriter. Quite a niche, huh? ... The requirement was at least two years of experience writing for the air conditioning industry. Sadly, Im not qualified. The best thing about this post? The comments. Youd have to be pretty cool to do that for a living Somone who doesnt just blow hot air, you know, a real writer I hear its a breeze Never been a fan Turn it up you guys Would you have anything to add?
19.01.2022 Im a big fan of blogging for business. But I struggle to persuade clients to consider adding blogging to the marketing mix. They see it as the domain of recipes, parenting or travel. Its not something for serious business, right? ... Erm, no. Blogging is da best for business. Especially if you are on a DIY budget. They cost bugger all. So I wrote a blog. It details my five reasons you need a blog. Its good. You should read it. Do so right now.
19.01.2022 Recently I added an Acknowlegement of Country to my website. Would you like to do the same? In my latest blog Im sharing my research into the subject, useful resources and the wording I chose.
19.01.2022 When I worked in PR, dreamed of joining a PR agency with big-name clients. I did PR at RMIT but I didn't impress my lecturers. During my four-week job placement, the boss suggested I fail that semester. After I graduated, it took me seven months to get a job. I was lucky to join a small agency, a great start. But still, it didn't have the big-name brands.... Then I moved to a hotel, where I was sexually harassed, bullied, and fired. So I headed to London where I worked for a terrific PR agency for a few years. The agency even made the top 150 PR agencies in the UK list (at number 147). But. I still wanted those big-name brands. When I came home from London, I worked as a book publicist. Which was awesome! But it wasn't PR. Then, at the ripe old age of 29, I joined PPR and I made it! My clients were Bunnings, Emirates, Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, and Officeworks. And heaps more. I met Bob Geldof. I knocked over Michala Banas in the Emirates marquee. It was great. I had the BEST time working there and stayed for five years. These days? I couldn't give a toss about big brands. I prefer working with talented, passionate, small business owners. What about your career? Were you a late bloomer like me? Or did you take a few years to find your groove?

17.01.2022 Do you have a blog for your business but youve left it neglected? You cant write? It takes too loooong... and no one will read it anyway? Well I hate to get #woowoo on your ass. But if you keep telling yourself youre rubbish at writing and cant find time to blog, youll never get out of that rut. ... Really, if you want to show up for your audience, you gotta blog. If you want people messaging you saying your blog spoke to me, you gotta blog. If you want better ranking on Google, you gotta blog, dammit. Are you pouring your heart into Instagram and social media, while your blog stays neglected? Ahem. Average enagement on Instagram is 3%. Meanwhile, businesses that blog get 97% more links to their websites. Sites with a blog have 434% more indexed pages. Even just once a month is a good start. By the end of the year, you will have twelve great articles that help your customers and bring leads via shares and SEO. Dont neglect your blog! Thanks for listening to my TED talk. 17.01.2022 The minute you take a team photo for your website, you are GUARANTEED someone will resign. It's so frustrating, right? You've just taken a great team shot, everyone is happy-ish about their photo and it's centre stage on your website. Then someone resigns, and you have to go through the process all over again.... Even though you may have to get photos taken regularly, it's SO worth it. Customers want to see the people in your team that they'll be working with. (One of the benefits of being a solo operator - not having to worry about this problem.) Of course, you can also get individual team photos for your website too. That makes life easier if someone departs. Helping you decide the best photos for your website is part of my website mojo audit session. I'll take a look at your website images and help you make the most of them - or find better ones. Are your website photos doing your business justice? Book a one-hour website mojo audit with me for $99 and find out. I'll pop the link with all the info in the comments.

15.01.2022 Are you keen on blogging but not sure what to write about? Do you sit down to write a blog and your mind goes blank? A very common blog tactic is using listed items: - 13 reasons why you should start juggling daily... - 27 questions to ask before you hire a butler for your dog - 5 myths about belly dancing you should ignore You see this kind of blog content around everywhere. Because it works! So why not do it too? If you are STILL stuck? Ive created a list of 15 awesome blog posts you can write. If you steal these ideas and write a blog on each of my subjects each week? Starting today, youll run out of ideas on Friday 6 November, 2020. Not bad huh? #blogsandbloggers #bloggingforbusiness
13.01.2022 Could get the same in Kmart Someone on Upwork would do it for $50 Do you have customers making unfair price comparisons about your product or service? Sure, they could get the activewear from Kmart. But is it ethically made in Australia from high-quality fabric? Or someone could get a copywriter to write blogs for far less than what I charge. But do they get non-boring, gimme-more, Google-lovin blogs from a writer with decades of experience? Its like comparing Sporty Spi...ce with Posh Spice. One is doing all the heavy lifting vocally. The other is purely for decorative pouting. (Sorry Posh, its true.) When Im working with clients writing fresh website content, we discuss this question at length. Those unfair price comparisons need to be dissected and thoroughly understood. So, when I write the website content, I can debunk those assumptions and educate your consumers about true value. Does your website content get that message across? Perhaps your pages are more Posh Spice than Sporty Spice? If so, send me a DM about how I can help to get your website pages working harder for you. 12.01.2022 These are too funny. Im sure there are bad stock photos of writers too.
11.01.2022 Have you ever posted for a copywriter, designer or other experts on Facebook? Perhaps youve tried on Like Minded Bitches Drinking Wine or Mums with Hustle? How did it go for you? Did you get overwhelmed with responses? Did you get endorsements that seem a little far-fetched? Perhaps someone told you to check out her 300 5-star reviews, but on reading them, the reviews seem inauthentic?... Or did you find someone great? In my latest blog, Im sharing the pitfalls of looking for copywriters (and other creatives) on Facebook and how to get the best outcome. Ill share the link in the comments.
10.01.2022 Repetition. It's what makes the difference in your blogging success. You can't publish three blogs and expect results. But by regularly publishing content at least monthly (preferably fortnightly) everything starts to come together. ... *Your website traffic increases as you gain readers *Your audience is starting to trust you as an expert, because you publish free helpful stuff *Google's algorithm notices you and your rankings start to increase *You have quality stuff to share on socials and in your newsletter (that drives clicks back to your site) *Your audience knows that you will show up for them, so they trust you and like you more It all comes from repetition. It's not easy. It will cost you either time or money. Time to do it yourself or money for a copywriter to do it for you. But it is *SO* worth it. I have helped my customers rank in the top phrases for their keywords with content strategy and I can help you too. My 'Two Blogs in a Day' package is $677+ GST. You get two bonza blog posts, written to show your expertise and help, inspire and benefit your audience AND optimised for the right SEO keywords.
10.01.2022 Blogging is great and all for engaging with customers, showing your expertise and getting your audience to see the real, authentic, awesome YOU. But why not get a little Google-lovin while youre there? The key with getting your blog posts ranking on Google is using the right keywords in the right places. ... So to help you out (Im nice like that) I wrote a blog about how to find keywords and what the hell do to with them.
10.01.2022 Don't you hate it when you are reading a blog post and it's unreadable due to the keyword density? How to tickle a wombat Have you ever wanted to tickle a wombat? Tickling wombats is a great way to get a wombat to laugh. In fact, if you tickle a wombat every day, you will soon realise the many benefits of ticking wombats. Ready to dive into the word of wombat tickling? Let's go.... Does it drive you nuts? It's unreadable! Blogs written for SEO will often use this tactic. Getting the keyword in the headline and the first 100 words is a signal to Google. The WordPress Yoast plugin also encourages blog writers to do this too. The result often makes a blog WORSE. Writing for readers and Google is a tricky balance. I weave in the keywords in more subtle way, so the readability of the blog is not compromised. Because if the blog is a mess of keywords, it might rank - but it fails in that last hurdle - impressing customers. Want some customer-impressing, SEO findable blog content? Try my two blogs in a day package. We chat in the morning and by COB you get two killer blog posts in your inbox. It's $677 + gst. If you'd like to learn more, here's all the info.
10.01.2022 Why dont your customers buy from you? This is a question I ask during my epic website briefing conversations. Many clients have difficulty answering. They dont get the chance to speak to the people who didnt buy - so its hard to quantify. Often, we have to land on guesswork.... Do they think you are too expensive? Do they think you are too cheap? Do they not understand the value of your offer? And thats okay. Its about overcoming those objections in your website copy. By acknowledging those customer concerns you show that you understand them. Then you can prepare your strong counterargument. It may be expensive, but it lasts longer/works harder It may be cheap, but its still great quality (we save on costs by ) Imagine the benefits of the time youll save and the costs youll reduce when you Its all about overcoming objections. Its a crucial element of the persuasive process. Does your website content overcome objections? Does it do so with confidence? If not, give your copywriter a call (or send me a message to arrange a rewrite).
09.01.2022 Someone had to say it.
09.01.2022 Would you like me to tell you how crap your website is? Id be delighted to do it. In my $99 website audit, I go through your website home page and tell you what sux about it. But I also tell you how to fix it. Ive done about ten of these audits so far. I try to be kind but I guess Im kinda blunt. Website owners react in one of two ways. ... They either are super excited and can clearly see exactly what needs to change about their website. *Or* they get a bit defeated, and depressed about what they need to do and how to do it. I get it. It can be overwhelming to realise your website is like a lazy employee, slacking off instead of working hard. But once you know what to do, you can fix it. Want me to cast my expert eye over your website? Ill tell you whats what.
08.01.2022 Whats your opinion on feedback? Im starting to think its not overly helpful most of the time. If someone thinks youre too loud, and should tone down.... Or tells you do something salesly to get more customers, that makes you feel ick. Or thinks you should not be so open about personal things, you should be more professional Do you listen, and try and change who you are? You could try, but youd probably fail. Im all for learning and self improvement. But changing the way you do things, or following someone elses formula or advice, without stopping to see how it works for you? Not. Helpful. Quite often the person giving you the feedback is: *someone close to you who wants to keep you safe, so tries to stop you doing anything potentially risky (but you miss out on the reward) * some judgy random on the internet who doesnt reflect your ideal customer * an expert giving generic advice on what works for them and their audience - which may not be right for you Im learning to be more confident in my own opinions, and doing what feels right to me. I still follow the advice of others, but Im very careful about who I listen to. What do you think? Is there such a thing as the wrong kind of advice?
08.01.2022 Do you feel icky asking for Google My Business reviews? They are so very helpful for your business. They give you social proof and SEO value. But I have a few clients who dont ask, because they feel uncomfortable. Ive learned to ask, rather shamelessly. And its fine. The worst thing that can happen is they say no. And Im okay with that. Now Im used to asking, I only hesitate a little. Im still always a bit nervous, but I plough ahead anyway. ... Heres my tips on asking for reviews: *ask at the end of the project, or a few weeks or months of working with you *explain how it helps your business and you really appreciate it *dont ask heaps of clients at once, it could look dodgy (if youre using Google My Business, which you *should*) *ask via email so you dont put them on the spot on the phone *if you get a nice thank you message - reply and ask hey, could you turn this into a review? *make it easy - send them a link in the email to the reivew platform *dont ask them to review multiple platforms - its too time consuming *understand that some people are just 4-star review types - they never give a perfect five star *dont ask people to change the review once its written *respond to each review and acknowledge the work the client put in (subtle plug for their biz can help) *give plenty of reveiws yourself (dont expect anything back)
07.01.2022 My kids make outrageous claims all the time. Such as: I didn't sleep, I just lay with my eyes closed, not moving, all night. One time I was on a plane I opened the window and the cloud came in. ... It wasn't me who drew eyebrows and devil horns on the people in the magazine. They've learned to be skeptical of each other, so when one sister is bragging, another will say: "Prove it." That's where the lies come unstuck. And often, that's where the claims you make on your website come unstuck too. You have to prove it. Seriously, why would someone believe you? Here's how to prove it: - featuring testimonials - sharing your expertise with a blog - publishing case studies - using cold, hard numbers - how many clients you've helped, years of experience, hours you've studied, even money you've spent on your own development - having a brand and website site that reflects your values. A strong brand and quality site shows you mean business and offer quality (and vice versa) - showing you understand your clients' pain points - you know your clients well So, are you making claims on your website without proving it? Go get yourself some proof.
07.01.2022 Spotted on Facebook: I just launched my own business a week ago. Although I had good traffic to my site with my search and social media efforts, I havent had any potential customers contact me yet. Is this normal? Should I be more patient? To answer the questions: Yes and yes. ... If only you could launch your website and wait for the avalanche of sales calls. Wouldnt that be great? But alas. its not that simple. It takes time to build a reputation, to make a name for yourself and to gain word-of-mouth referrals. How long does it take? No one knows. If this is you my advice is: *price yourself cheaper than more established competitors - make the cheaper price conditional on getting that social proof via reviews, case studies and testimonials *focus on marketing that your competitors may neglect (due to being busy with paid clients) *create the systems and processes for when you are busy now (workflows, contracts, onboarding, terms, etc) *work on your SEO straight away, with a fast, content-rich, well designed website - and regular blogging of course What advice would you give someone whos launched a week ago and wondering where the customers are?
06.01.2022 Do you have particular times of year that your service is in demand? If so, then time your blogging activity around those peak periods. Perhaps youre a fitness coach and you getting heaps of leads at the moment (because we all want to lose our covid kilos)! ... A friend of mine is a Professional Organiser. She says December is dead, but come January? Shes ready with all the New Year resolution help. So if you have limited time to blog, why not focus on your core sales periods? Skip the quiet periods then blog your butt off at the time when your customer really needs your help. Skip the once or twice a month model and see if it works.
06.01.2022 In primary school, my best friend was Karen Johnson. Weve long since lost touch. But I think of her these days. Wondering how she feels about her name becoming synonymous with selfish, whiny, privileged middle-aged women. Poor Karen Johnson. She was fun. We used to pretend to be The Pink Ladies. She had the best Care Bear roller skates. It must suck to be a Karen these days.
06.01.2022 Most of my clients are very good writers indeed. But they still come to me for writing blogs. Why? Of course, they could write blogs themselves. ... It's a time factor. Clients aren't sure what to blog about. Plus because they don't have the experience in writing blogs, it takes them an entire day to get it written. That's just not a good spend of their time. It makes far more sense to outsource. It's very rarely about the writing, and very often about the time. Plus, blog writing is easily outsourced. You have to show up as yourself recording podcasts or videos. But writing blogs? You can totally handball that. If you are ready to save time and outsource your blog writing, try my two blogs in a day package. For $677 + gst, you get two scroll-stopping, authority-building, Google-loving blog posts.
05.01.2022 During my PR career, I was the Account Director the PR account for Bunnings. I was lucky to learn about the marketing and pricing strategy for one of Australias most trusted brands. They had a good-better-best product range strategy. The idea was not to overcomplicate with a range that is confusingly large. Instead, each product was carefully selected to fit into this category. So, customers at each price point had a purchasing opportunity. Best: Theres a percentage of VI...P customers who just want the best and will pay top dollar to get it. Their dearest commodity is their time, not price. So, anything that saves them time, theyll pay for. Good: A minority who are very price conscious. They want the cheapest option, as their budget is limited. But they still want good (not crappy). So the product element needs to deliver on its promises and still offer value for money. Better: A majority that dont want the cheapest, but dont want the premium rates either. So your best package will be your top seller, the program most customers choose. Can you create similar packages for your service with a good/better/best platform? If its good enough for Bunnings, its good enough for you.
05.01.2022 Weve been doing plenty of chalk drawings on our driveway/footpath lately. Kids love it. Its a rare moment outdoors and away from screens. #stagefourlockdown Neighbours and dog walkers enjoy our scribblings. (Weve gotten letters)... Plus, it all washes away in the rain so we happily start again with something new. *win* If youre in Melbourne with kids, how are you getting through lockdown?
04.01.2022 How do you make your blogs more readable? One of my favourite ways: headlines. Or subheadlines, to be precise. Subheadlines help. Heres why:... 1) skim readers I work all my key points into my subheadlines. That way, if someone skim reads only the headlines, they still get the valuable point. 2) structure If your blog is wavering from one point to the next, subheadlines will give it definition. It forces you to stick to the point of the headline. The result is better flow and clarity in your blog post. 3) helpful for readers Your audience can easily scroll to the part that they value most. (Like those food websites that have an essay before you hit the actual recipe.) 4) keywords Put a few keywords in your subheadlines (and elsewhere) for better search engine results. When you write your next blog, dont forget the headlines.
04.01.2022 In nearly eight years of copywriting, Ive noticed one thing that ALL clients have in common. No matter what the industry, they all do it. Im guilty too. They put their own business last. They are so busy looking after their clients that they dont give their business the same attention. ... Copywriters are bad at this. They write beautiful sites for others but their own is slow to launch, or hasnt had a blog published in months. I see it all the time. My meeting gets bumped because a client needs them. Theyre too busy packing sales orders to approve my draft. Theres an old saying about this. The cobblers children have no shoes. (A bit dramatic, but okay.) This year, now that I have more time and older children, Im changing this. Ive allocated a CEO day where I work solely on my business. I write blogs for my own site, whoo! I plan out content for social media. Im proactive as hell. Its great! What about you? Do you look after your business as well as you do your clients? Or are you like the cobbler, whose children have no shoes? (Especially not these Jimmy Choos.)
04.01.2022 Shoutout to my Melbourne peeps. Lockdown is tough. I feel sorry for my kids; they miss their friends. I feel sorry for friends with family overseas, wondering when theyll be able to see them again. Not for years, perhaps. I feel deeply sorry for those whove lost jobs, who have businesses forced to shut. Friends in travel, retail and hospitality doing it tough right now. I feel sorry for my husband working out of the laundry. Its cold in there.... I feel sorry for kids in grade six, who miss out on their year to be leaders at school. I feel sorry for VCE students who struggle to study under difficult conditions. I feel sorry for my wonderful father-in-law and parents, all in their seventies and missing out on the fun of retirement. I feel sorry for politicians who are working hard to keep us safe. I feel sorry for me! And all the parents trying to support home learning plus keep working at the same time. I dont feel sorry for dickheads who wont wear masks, bosses who tell their staff to breach isolation and that Mornington woman who refused to isolate after skiing in Colorado and is now rumoured to skip isolation for a trip to Mt Buller. 03.01.2022 I used to feel strange about asking for reviews. But now I just ask. I don't mind if people say no. And mostly, they say yes. Then I get reviews like this and I feel happy in my insides.
03.01.2022 When was the last time you took a good look at your website buttons? Those little babies are the only way you can get a sale or a booking. Crappy buttons make it harder for your customers to buy. Thats why you should have a good old think about your buttons and make sure theyre written right. ... So get rid of your learn more and your submit. In my latest blog I share my interview with button guru Jennifer Gale from Pink Hat Digital. This woman sure knows buttons!
03.01.2022 In my daily walks I often find myself in tears. Its the book Im listening to on Audible - Your Own Kind of Girl by Clare Bowditch. Its magical. Heartbreakingly raw and honest. ... I confess I didnt know much about Clare. (Except that she was on Offspring.) Shes such a gorgeous soul. She narrates the audiobook herself, and its just heavenly. Even though Ive practically sobbed while listening to it, Ive loved every moment. Do you like books that make you cry? Or prefer more lighthearted tomes?
03.01.2022 I pitched for a blog project. It's me versus SEMRush Marketplace. SEMrush market place is a resource for website content. You can get website pages, blogs, or emails written for very low rates. I'm far more expensive.... But I offer a few advantages that even the playing field: > I'm a native English speaker > I understand the Aussie market and use Aussie lingo when needed (Tell him he's dreaming) > I interview my clients in person, instead of writing from a few bullets But the one thing that gives me the edge? Because I'm paid quite well, I have the time to ask questions, research, and take a deep dive into my clients' businesses. Plus, as I work with my long-term clients I truly get to know the business, so it gets effortless and easy for us both. After just a few months of working together, (sometimes straight away) I start to proactively suggest blog posts, throw in value-add services here and there. Plus, I manage the editorial calendar and keep a steady stream of blog post ideas coming for you to choose from. If you'd like to book in my 'Two Blogs in a Day' service, it's $677+gst. Send me a DM and we can see if you're the right fit to work with me.
03.01.2022 On this day in 2012 I started my freelance copywriting business! Starting as a sole trader is like skydiving. Youre nervous as hell and scared youll fall flat on your face. When I launched I had NO clue. I specialised in writing websites, but you know what? I had not written a website before. How silly. I just figured Id be good at it. Spoiler alert: I was! ... However, I am not very good at celebrating my work anniversary. Actually, in eight years, I think this is the *first* time Ive even talked about it. So there will be no champagne popping or fancy dinner. Just business as usual. How do you celebrate your business anniversary? By doing barely anything, like me? Or something cool like skydiving? #copywriting
02.01.2022 Your website has two jobs: 1) Attracting your ideal customers 2) Repelling customers you DONT want You dont want customers who haggle on price or who dont value your products. ... Also? You dont want customers who dont like your style. If your brand personality shines through on your website, the people who dont dig it wont take the next step. If your website accidentally appeals to the wrong kind of people you end up with: time wasting phone calls asking how much? (then getting mad when they cant afford it) PITA (pain in the arse) clients who treat you badly, dont follow process and nitpicker your strategy unfun projects as clients shoehorn you into their own expectations that dont fit your ethos in retail, plenty of costly returns or lack of repeat customers Youd really rather they swan off before buying from you. They can jog on and make room for the customers you do want. The best way to repel? Strong brand personality Confident pricing The brand personality repels those who dont like your vibe. And the pricing repels those who dont value your service and think youre overpriced. So today? Take a fresh look at your website with this in mind: is it repelling those customers you dont want?
02.01.2022 I once took a freelance gig with an agency paying me 35 bucks an hour. I wasnt getting much work so I thought it was better than nothing. Wrong. They were very nice people. Trouble was, I didnt love their approach. ... I churned out content, mostly blogs stuffed with keywords. The only briefs I got? Directions to copy competitors website content. They didnt charge their clients for my copywriting. So, the clients didnt value the service. They had a dude employed full time just calling businesses out of the yellow pages and asking them do you want a website? He got no leads. After about six weeks, he quit. I couldnt help but wonder: if they are so-called marketing experts, why do they have to cold call? The whole thing just wasnt my vibe. I had experience working with a successful, dynamic, clever PR agency. This lot just did not compare. So after a while? I quit. My business grew rapidly after I left. Turns out, by working for them I had neglected my own clients and marketing. Without them, I was free to work with clients who valued my expertise. Life was much better.
