11.01.2022 Hi all, Kieran here, Dots+Loops' founder and director. Dots+Loops began as a post-genre concert series, under a purposefully post-modernist framework. Yes, a lot of what we do stems from the classical music tradition. But as per our post-modernist roots, what we do is just as much a reaction against classical music. I do not consider ourselves a classical music organisation, because I have as many issues with the tradition as I have reasons to love it. I've been reading a lo...t of platitudes from classical music organisations talking about how they need to "do better" and how they are "committed to learning". Acknowledging (and more importantly, acting on) these sentiments is important. But for us to enact real change for black lives, we need *systematic* change and rebuilding. It's a plain fact that classical music is a euro-centric traditionand is very often racist. If black people (and other POC) want to be a part of classical music, they should be welcomed with open arms. We only grow from diversity. Classical music organisations "offering" black creatives "opportunities" to compose for, or perform with them is great. But it's important to realise that these "opportunities" are as much, or even more, for the benefit of classical music and the organisations offering them, than they may be for the black people they're offered to. *Without systematic change, it's just another form of colonialism*. When youexplicitly or implicitlydictate the framework that black creatives need to operate under to work with youa framework built on whitenessit's colonialism. Real change can only come from honest, open and conscious learning and collaboration. This conversation is not about us. It's about black voices. But I do feel compelled to be the best ally I can, and I think it's really important me and my colleagues in the greater contemporary art music sphere really think about this from a different perspective. However, If you do care, I will do another post soon with what we have done, and what we are specifically doing now at Dots+Loops to enact real change, and not just spread meaningless platitudes. In the mean time, solidarity, love and hope to everyone fighting because #BlackLivesMatter. They matter in America, and here in Australia. I live, and Dots+Loops operates on Turrbal and Jagera land, land that was never ceded but was stolen by force, and the first inhabitants of our land still routinely experience so much violence, discrimination, poor health and so much more as a result of this colonialism. We need to learn. We need to be and do better. You can start by turning up to Black Lives Matter - Stop Black Deaths In Custody Meanjin (BNE) this Saturday! #alwayswasalwayswillbe #aboriginalland.

09.01.2022 None of us would be where we are today without the support of our community, and our primary goal is to give back to and build this community. However, arts funding in Australia is scarcer than ever, and at the same time, COVID-19 has resulted in a significant reduction in arts employment, creation and education. This makes the generous financial support of our patrons vital to the continuation and sustainability of Dots+Loops. Support for our 2020 projects is welcomed via t...he Australian Cultural Fund. Between Joining the Dots and Reboot, every cent donated will help provide employment for over forty artists and artsworkers during this unprecedented time of disruption to the arts community. All donations over $2 made through the Australian Cultural Fund are tax-deductible. We can’t thank you enough for your support! Visit https://www.dotsandloops.com.au/donate to donate today.

08.01.2022 Have you bought tickets for Dots+Loops Reboot yet? Make sure you grab them quick as its likely to sell our! It's just over two weeks away and we're getting super excited, so in the lead up we're going to introduce all the artists involved in the show. First up is a new and VERY IMPORTANT addition to the lineup, Tristan Rogers! Trumpeter, improviser and composer, Tristan is making waves around the local jazz, hip hop and neo-soul scene. BUT, Tristan also makes some of the best... handmade sourdough pizza in Brisbane! Pizza has been an obsession of mine for many years now. What started as a Monday Night all-you-can-eat frenzy has now turned into a fun little side hustle. I noticed myself quickly becoming a ‘crust snob’, I would be pretty devastated having to wait half an hour and spend upwards of $25 on a pizza base that wasn’t all that flash. I want to deliver a high quality, hand-stretched Neapolitan pizza at a fraction of cost. Armed with a Gozney Roccbox and my 65% hydration dough, I’m ready to sling a ‘za to you street food style! Tristan will be slinging some of his legendary handmade sourdough pizzas at REBOOT, so arrive hungry! $15 for a pizza, $2 to add salami, and vegan options are available

02.01.2022 Two artists in our Dots+Loops extended family released (phenomenal) albums today! Tilman Robinson's Culturecide is his debut on Bedroom Community, and the album is as big a deal as landing a spot on the label! His third studio album, Culturecide "is an investigation of the anthropocene; a seven part lamentation for our chaotic world." If you like stunning ambient soundscapes, big ominous bass and glitchy electronics as much as we do, it's a must-listen. Seriously, Tilman's so...und-design is mindblowing! https://tilmanrobinson.bandcamp.com/album/culturecide Bec Plexus (FKA Brechtje) has also just landed on a big deal label, and releases her debut album STICKLIP on New Amsterdam today! "Introducing the wildly playful avant electronica of Amsterdam-based Bec Plexus, whose musical mantra is to invite and invert. Her meticulously structured debut recording STICKLIP wanders to unexpected places with each song serving as a channel for a secret to be revealed: an absurdist confessional booth in the church of Bec Plexus." We've loved being a part of Bec's musical journey since we first commissioned her in 2017, and this is such an exciting summation of her unique musical and artistic voice! https://becplexus.bandcamp.com/album/sticklip What do you think of these super rad releases?

01.01.2022 As with almost everyone else in the world, we originally had quite different plans for 2020. In particular, Dots+Loops annual festival Nonstop was planned for this December, and has had to be postponed to 2021. Instead, as the COVID-19 pandemic emerged and changed the way we currently live our lives, we have worked tirelessly on new ways to bring our community back together, safely. Joining the Dots is purpose-designed to bring our community back together in a temporarily phy...sically distanced world, providing artists with paid work, and providing free skill-building for our community. In doing so, we’re creating a safe digital space for our whole extended Dots+Loops family, new and old, to join together and celebrate exciting, adventurous and thought-provoking art, at a time when we need it more than ever. Buuuuuut - we want to hang out in person too! So, we have a save the date! December 12, 2020: Dots+Loops Reboot. This intimate event will be an opportunity for our local Dots+Loops family to once again celebrate live music in the flesh, support local Brisbane artists, and bring our community back together, all in a safe and socially distanced way. We don’t want to give too much away just yet, but we are so excited to see you again. Keep your eyes on our newsletter and socials for more details coming soon!
