12.01.2022 ...METEOR SHOWERS, AND A GREAT CONJUNCTION... Lots happening in our night sky during December, these are a few of our picks. PHEONICID METEOR SHOWER ... Not the most active of showers, but it is best viewed from Australia and New Zealand. This shower peaks around December 2nd. These are visible from after sunset until around dawn. Look to the south. These can be seen without a telescope or binoculars. GEMINIDIS METEOR SHOWER One of the most active showers, with up to 120 an hour visible during it's peak. The best dates to view this shower is 13/14th December. Interestingly, this meteor shower originates from an asteroid, unlike most others which come from a comet. * will pop an article in comments about some of our biggest meteor showers * THE GREAT CONJUNCTION ( cue all The Dark Crystal references ) This truly is one to try and see! This conjunction is when Jupiter and Saturn appear closest in the sky. The last was in 2000, and this will be the closest since 1623! The 2 planets are moving closer together now, but will be closest December 21st, around half an hour after sunset on the western horizon. It will be visible to the naked eye, but with a reasonable telescope you will pick up much more detail. * Will pop a link in comments with more info about this conjunction.
