The posted words really got me thinking ... Here is my interpretation: When life isn't so great, we often prioritise external demands and deprive our needs until they can't be ignored. When life is great, we have a tendency to protect our energy and indulge in more things that replenish ourselves. "The unconscious processing abilities of the human brain are estimated at roughly 11 million pieces of information per second. Compare that to the estimate for conscious processing: about 40 pieces per second. Our conscious processing capacity isn’t insignificant, but clearly it’s just a retention pond compared to the ocean of the unconscious." So how are we determining what we focus on? In simplified Neuro Linguistic Programming terms: All incoming information is filtered by our beliefs (influences), values, memories/life experiences and subconscious programming (historical behavioural decisions). These delete, distort and generalise to represent what we consciously focus on (what we see and interpret). Hence my quote "Be careful what you focus on - you get what you expect." So if you are expecting the worst, you will find it! So how do we improve what we focus on? Carl Jung (Swiss psychiatrist) wrote: "Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate." 06.01.2022 BREAK THE CYCLE Let me start todays post with a quote by Liza Palmer that I often use with clients to understand the source of: their own anger, someone they care about or a cycle they are both caught in; it reads: "Anger is just sads bodyguard."... In other words when you, or someone else is angry, it is often associated with feelings of hurt (sadness, fear, resentment etc); This could be from a cycle of interactions with the person we are dealing with, however more often than not, it is from a past or current unresolved EXTERNAL experience (e.g. past relationships, other current relationships, work or financial pressures, childhood, etc). A way break the cyclen is to: CONSCIOUSLY identify when we feel a lack of control within ourselves, or identify it in another. pause, dont react and think objectively; What is the true source of the anger? (hurt, sadness, fear, resentment); Is it really about the current situation or something else? (past relationships, work or finacial pressures, childhood, etc) If you are the one acting in anger, accept responsibility and apologise. To improve your self control it is important to talk it through with the person, or a trusted person, to identify and unearth the source of the trigger. This helps to make the unconscious behaviour conscious and therefore gain clearer perspective of issues as they occur and respond instead of react. When dealing with someone who is angry, it is equally important to pause and not react - BE CALM ( "Conflict cannot survive without your participation." - Wayne Dwyer) LISTEN TO UNDERSTAND where they are coming from (what is the true source?) Showing understanding and respect for their feelings, offer your point of view (and / or feelings) without blame or excuses. Focus on what can be done to improve the situation. They are the major source of motivation, and a big factor in our ability to think clearly. Emotions are the most present, pressing and sometimes painful force in our lives. When we act on our emotions too quickly, or when we act on the wrong kinds of emotions, we often make decisions that we later regret. ... 03.01.2022 EMBRACING CHANGE Over the last two years (since creating this page) I have shared many posts with insights into how we perceive change (and associated topics such as fear, procrastination and the antifragile mind); and how we can reframe our thinking to work with it more positively. - Today I will share below (and continued in comments) extracts from an article ... by Jack Canfield titled "4 tips to help you accept and embrace change". (full article link address at end of last comment) --- "Whether you perceive it or not, everything is constantly changing the environment, the weather, the economy, technology, society, culture, your friends and family, your body, everything. And the better able you are to embrace change in what is happening in your world, the easier it will be for you to live your best life. Change is the only constant in life. Heraclitus For some people, the idea of constant and never-ending change is terrifying, because change often involves risk and loss possibly of something big, like your house, your job, your money, your friends, your family, or just the loss of whatever is comfortable and familiar. Some people see change as something to fear or dread, instead of something that is a new adventure that has the potential to improve them or their life. Thats what change actually is: its an opportunity for you to experience something new and to grow and evolve as a person. Change asks you to: Learn new things. Master new skills. Develop new qualities like flexibility, optimism, courage, and persistence. All of which ultimately results in you becoming a better, more capable person. And thats a good thing!" 03.01.2022 GO DEEPER | EMOTIONAL VOCABULARY is imperative to understanding, accepting and making a positive personal change. - In my recent posts I have talked about change in our lives and how it makes us feel and how we can tap into it to identify positive changes we can take to improve our lives. - The one thing we cant avoid is our own thoughts.... NEGATIVE CORE EMOTIONS such as ANGRY, SAD and FEARFUL indicate behaviours and situations that we wish to avoid (move away from); while POSITIVE CORE EMOTIONS such as HAPPY and PEACEFUL indicate behaviours and situations we want more of (to move toward). - HOW to go DEEPER When faced with any of the core emotions you can: Write down the core emotion the situation that has created it (when, who, how) identify the deeper feeling (using the below CORE EMOTIONS list) Ask yourself why / what upset you about it? Was it the actual situation or something from past or something else that is happening concurrently in your life? Is it something you can change? (get better at, work at, improve on? Or even move away from?) What can you do about it (take action)? If you cant control the situation you have the power to change how you react to it. CORE EMOTIONS LIST ANGRY: hurt, disgusted, threatened, frustrated, embarrassed, irritated, provoked, resentful SAD: lonely, ignored, depressed, abandoned, indifferent, vulnerable, isolated, powerless, ashamed, empty FEARFUL: rejected, insecure, anxious, scared, humilated, inadequate, frightened, overwhelmed, insignificant HAPPY: proud, loving, optimistic, respected, fulfilled, hopeful, inspired, confident PEACEFUL: content, loving, relaxed, thankful, trusting, thoughtful, nurturing, grateful, sentimental - If you, or someone you know, is having difficulty understanding their emotions or need help in exploring actions for positive life change, Life Coaching is a safe space to get the support and assistance you need. - Its free to have a chat to find out more. 03.01.2022 "ABOVE or BELOW THE LINE THINKING" explained | The following is extracted from an article by Carolyn Rowland: "At any given moment throughout life, you are either living above or below the line.... This is also referred to in NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) as cause versus effect thinking. (Sometimes also referred to as "Victor / Victim thinking) The question to ask yourself at all times is which side of the line are you living? Are you living Above the line, or at Cause? Or Are you living Below the line, also known as living at Effect of things that happen to you? Before you answer that question, lets take a look at each side. Above the line, we own the ship and have an O.A.R. (Ownership Accountability Responsibility) in the water. Below the line, youre making your B.E.D. (Blame Excuses Denial), and you must lie in it. When something goes wrong, the easiest thing to do is to blame it on someone else, find an excuse or deny that there is a problem. Playing below the line is destructive as it doesnt resolve anything. If you have a problem and play below the line, the problem gets worse, its the behavior of a victim, and thats where failure becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Whether you play above or below the line all comes down to one word, decisions. It is up to you to decide whether your actions are above or below the line. It is up to you to decide because your decisions x your actions = your results. So, if you want your results to improve, it is up to you to determine above or below the line. "Playing above the line" is constructive because taking ownership of, and responsibility for our decisions and actions leads to the resolution of problems. It also ensures that they dont happen again. This pro-active approach is typical of people with a victor mentality. It is essential we all need to commit to playing above the line at all times.
