24.01.2022 A little Saturday Silly...

23.01.2022 Hi Everyone! What’s with the crazy weather we’re having around here! Wouldn’t think it’s Summer! Not to worry! It’s perfect weather to do some work outside...not too hot! A nearby place is looking for a couple of people to do some general outside work...weeding, brush cutting, wood splitting etc for a few days. Dougie’s Place has a couple of beds available for accommodation, but you will need a car to get to the work.... Contact us for more info! See more

22.01.2022 Hi Everyone! Very quiet around Dougie's Place at the moment...stage 4 restrictions are in place which means no-one can travel too far. We are looking forward to welcoming visitors as soon as possible, but in the meantime, please stay safe, mask up and stay well!

20.01.2022 Picking season is almost upon us and the kiwi berry farm in Gembrook is looking for fruit pickers to work between late Feb - early April. For more info and hourly rate please email Henry on [email protected]

19.01.2022 In light of current events, this is a reminder that toilet paper is the only flushable paper. Any other paper products (tissues, wetwipes, napkins, kitchen to...wel) belong in the rubbish bin. Respect your throne and pipes and only flush the 3Ps - pee, poo & toilet paper. #yvwater #respectthethrone #toiletpapercrisis #3Ps #toiletpaper #toiletpaperapocalypse

19.01.2022 Lovely and warm (hot!) here today! Blue sky and sunshine. Not to make you jealous or anything, but this one is for you Oli Löwenherz!

18.01.2022 Anyone looking for a bit of work? Enjoy being around horses? Not for 2nd year visa/88 days, but good for $$$!!! General farm stuff including fence painting! Close to Dougie’s Place, but you’ll need a car. Contact Dougie’s Place for details. ... And YES! We do have vacancies - at the moment!! See more

18.01.2022 What a cracker of a morning here in beautiful Emerald! Spring is definitely here at last! Restrictions will ease - eventually - and the tree farms will be needing workers. (The trees & plants don’t know about all this covid19 business; they just keep on growing!!) Keep this in mind and watch this space for jobs as they come up. In the meantime, have a look at the Tassie Devils being fed this morning! https://facebook.com/events/s/friday-feeding-tasmanian-devil/2841655292829617/?ti=icl

16.01.2022 Well there you go...

15.01.2022 Pretty much sums it all up!

15.01.2022 Did you know.... Dougie’s Place opened 23 years ago! After several years of travelling and working to earn money to do more travel, the owner bought a house in Kings Rd, Emerald and opened it up to travellers from all over the world. She continued to enjoy the travelling lifestyle, without actually travelling! Dougie’s Place was born! The first backpackers to stay were two girls from South Africa; thus started the Dougie’s story! Dougie’s Place was so popular that many ...people had to be turned away as there were no vacancies. With the help of her parents, Clancy’s opened at 13 Russell St (where the current Dougie’s Place is) and more travellers were able to enjoy Emerald and the surrounding area. The nurseries around Monbulk & Silvan provided year round work, which was a great draw card. One particular backpacker, Lisa, worked at a native plant nursery. One day, about 21 years ago, she brought home two sad-looking seedlings which were planted in the front garden. They are still growing (albeit messily) and are a great reminder of the Dougie’s Place legacy...providing a Home In The Hills for people far from their homes. (See photos) The legacy garden has also acquired other plants from backpackers including a rose bush and a lovely weeping tree. (Thanks to Anna, Franzi, Ashleigh & Wes) In 2001 the owner got married (to a lovely man she met whilst travelling!!) and moved to the USA for several years. She sold the original house in Kings Rd and rented out Clancy’s as a family house. Fast forward to 2017 when they decided to reopen Dougie’s Place in Russell St (the old Clancy’s ) to welcome another generation of travellers from all over the world! So! Here we are! 23 years later! The wonderful thing is the people travelling today are just the same as the people travelling back then. Each with a love of life; a desire to see the world; experience new things; meet people and to have fun along the way. We are all the same at heart. Hope to see you soon!

15.01.2022 Hi Friends near & far, We hope you are all well and keeping distant! If you’re looking for ways to fill your days, here is a link to have a squiz at! Towards the bottom on the article, there are several links to live streams of all sorts of things... koalas sound the cutest though. https://www.timeout.com//an-australian-zoo-is-running-a-24... Stay well and we hope to see you all travelling again when this is all over. Until then, keep in touch!!

13.01.2022 Spring has sprung! A couple of the tree farms have contacted Dougie’s to let us know that they will be looking for a couple of workers in the next month or so. 12.01.2022 For anyone who is looking for a way to help with the recovery effort...

11.01.2022 Dougie’s Place is close enough to Melbourne that you can spend the day in the city and come home to the quietness Dougie’s offers. Looking for ideas for a day out in Melbourne? Try some of these... https://www.atlasobscura.com/things-to-/melbourne-australia

11.01.2022 A heartwarming little story.

10.01.2022 G'day Everyone! Just came to me that not everyone knows they need a Tax File Number to work in Australia. Your employer will ask for it as it all related to how much tax you will need to pay. (Usually as a backpacker, it is 15%, but you'll need a TFN!) It is free to apply for one and you do it online....no need to go through an agency, there's an official Australian Government website that will help you out. :D If you haven't applied for one already, here's the link.... https://www.ato.gov.au/Ind/Tax-file-number/Apply-for-a-TFN/ Happy job hunting!

10.01.2022 Looking for walks in the area? Here are some good ideas...

08.01.2022 *** POSITION FILLED!!! *** Thank you so much for all the interest and messages. This job has been filled, but keep checking back for more! :)... G’day Everyone! What a beautiful day!! A nearby tree farm is looking for a worker to start on Monday!! You will need a car to get to and from work as there isn’t a bus or public transport available. Please contact Dougie’s for more info if you’re available!! And YES!! We do have a vacancy!!

08.01.2022 Hi Everyone! Been a bit quiet with posts recently, but rest assured Dougie’s Place is alive and well! We have a couple of vacancies now as a few people have made a move to explore more of Australia! ... There are tree & plant farms around The Hills who are often looking for workers, so come on up and contact the farms! Only an hour’s drive from Melbourne, so great for a few days away too.
