25.01.2022 In an attempt to squash the rumour mill surrounding an Outbreak of Herpes in horses in Cairns and prevent me for having to answer 5000 questions, please rea...d here: There is no outbreak. There was one horse who tested positive (mainly because the incredibly diligent owner allowed us to test) to equine herpes virus 2 & 5- strains that are endemic in our Australian horse population. Up to 80% of our horses in Australia would be seropositive, meaning they have been infected at some stage. Chances are, your horse is already exposed, and maybe even an asymptotic carrier... shock horror! In fact, this time of year we get a lot of horses displaying symptoms of a viral infection (High temp, lethargic, clear nasal discharge, maybe a cough)- and yep, you guessed it, the most common viral cause is..... EQUINE HERPES VIRUS!!! We just often forego the testing, so we don’t get the specific diagnosis I suspect the stigma associated with the word herpes comes from the human version of herpes and our fear of it! Occasionally (mostly the other strains) can progress into more serious illness (just like the human cold and flu can). Rest assured, one single young horse testing positive, does not quantify as an outbreak. It also wasn’t a surprise to us, to receive this result, we tested to rule out more nasty infections. The horse is RECOVERED and required only very conservative treatment, as with majority of viral infections. So stress less lovely people and rest assure if there was a reason to panic, we would let you know Hope you all have a fabulous weekend Edit: this pic is a random horse nose with no correlation to the actual content of the post

11.01.2022 Please copy and paste. We need to give this idea momentum Wouldn't it be amazing if Brisbane Riverfire was cancelled for 2019 and the astronomical amount of... money that is wasted on fireworks donated to rural communities that are struggling to survive? With the kick Mother Nature has dished out to regional and rural Queensland since the beginning of the year, I believe there is greater need in the state than a night of extravagant fireworks. Given the very real struggles communities are having, such as the floods earlier this year in the north, Clifton with no fuel in town, whole towns like Stanthorpe and Warwick almost without water, and the most horrific bushfire season this state has ever seen, there are more worthy causes than an evening of fireworks #cancelriverfire2019 #saynotofireworks #byebrisbaneriverfire See more
