24.01.2022 Continueing on from my last post, It seems that generally speaking the people I see get the best benefit from leg stretches. However After legs, the most common area of tightness that I see in people is chest and shoulder tightness. Here Alan Thrall and Mark Bell demonstrate a great chest stretch that is quite unique in its simultaneous stretching of the chest, biceps and forearms. To complete the stretch: - Stand next to a wall with your hand flat against the wall, fingers ...pointed down (If you're not as flexible as Alan then for for a semi down position like Mark (The bald guy)) -Keeping your arm straight, tilt your upper torso away from the wall while keeping your hand flat on the wall. 20.01.2022 Postural and functional imbalances are generally as a result of two things: 1) a tightness of a muscle group(s) 2) Weakness in opposing muscle group(s) Knowing this allows us to develop strategies to overcome our miss alignments. For rounded shoulders - a very common miss alignment for most of us, the chest stretch from my previous post on Sunday will relieve issue 1 above. To complete the solution the opposing muscles also need to be strengthened, and in the case of the roun...ded shoulders I like to prescribe an exercise with a light resistance band called YTWL's. 17.01.2022 Another supplement I have been reading into recently is Beta-Alanine. If you've ever taken a pre workout supplement and after about 20 minutes felt face tingling (Paresthesias) then it likely had a moderate to high dose of Beta-Alanine in it. In lower doses these effects can be mitigated, and studies have shown that it can improve physical performance. It appears to do this by increasing the levels of Carnosine within the muscles. Similar to the way in which Creatine's water... loading is suggested to increase the hydrogen ion buffering capacity of muscles, Carnosine also plays a role in buffering against the muscle impairment imposed by hydrogen ions. Carnosine itself can be taken as a supplement, however it is not effectively transferred from the gut to the muscles, and therefore Beta-Alanine is seen as a more effective way to boost Carnosine levels in the muscles with studies showing increases of up to 80%. https://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/beta_alanine.htm
