19.01.2022 Well that was uneventful! Less than 24hrs after TC Kimi was introduced on the scene, the fun of cyclone track mapping and the mild hysteria and well, nothing. N...ot even a gust of wind. Yet ALL the media continue to broadcast to their millions of followers that Port Douglas / Cairns is in the firing line. The damage that misreporting about cyclones does to our town is devastating. Like everyone, we’ve suffered a tough year, this summer we won’t get our usual international visitors - now, we’ll likely miss out on domestic travellers because of this out of towner just cruising down the coast, hopefully sending rain to those who need it. For us, is business as usual. So hey Australia, come and Visit Port Douglas & Daintree. Douglas Shire Council | Explore Tropical North Queensland | Sunrise | Today Show | Karl Stefanovic

15.01.2022 DOUGLAS LABOUR SHORTAGE || FORUM Local business owners and leaders will come together next month to solve a critical labour shortage caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Douglas Shire Council, Douglas Chamber of Commerce, FNQ Employment and Tourism Port Douglas Daintree - Industry are inviting business owners to attend collaborative Local Jobs Program forums in Port Douglas and Mossman in a bid to fill the gap left by a reduction in working holiday maker visa holders.... The forums will be held on Tuesday, 9 February 2021. The most recent Economy ID job data (November 2020) shows that about 1275 people or 15.8 per cent of the population in the Douglas Shire were on JobSeeker or Youth allowance. The program will see a tailored approach to getting local people back to work or into work for the first time in local jobs, Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr. We know there are local people out there who can work for our local businesses and help us solve the issue. In particular, the accommodation and hospitality sector is finding it really challenging to fill vacancies. The program may range from a phone call providing advice, or even a grant-funded project, with most still active until June 2022. If you, or anyone else you know, are interested in participating in a forum to focus on your own business, or finding out what the local challenges are, then this is the session for you.
