22.01.2022 CLARK, John Heaviside, ca. 1770-1863; [LEWIN, John William 1770-1819] The dance. London : Edward Orme, 1813. Hand coloured aquatint, 240 x 185 mm (plate line), 315 x 225 mm (sheet), fine condition. A fine early image of a dance performed at a corroboree in New South Wales.... From Orme’s Supplement to Foreign Field Sports, titled Field sports of the native inhabitants of New South Wales, originally published in 1813 and later reprinted. Although the plates themselves name Heaviside as the artist and Dubourg as the engraver, it is known that Heaviside, who had never visited Australia, could not possibly have been the original artist. Rather, Heaviside must have adapted the original sketches which, as Wantrup argues convincingly, were probably made by J.W. Lewin (Australian rare books, pp 280-1). see: Ferguson, 739; Wantrup, 213b (note), and pp 280-3. #thedance #heavisideclarke #indigenousaustralia #aquatint #corroboree $440.00 AUD

19.01.2022 GLEESON, James (1915 - 2008) The watcher at the third gate. Oil on board, 150 x 125 mm, signed lower right. Painted circa 1970s. A fine example of Gleeson’s distinctive miniature scenes of a nude male figure in a psychoscape, an exploration of body and mind.... ‘Renowned as Australia’s foremost surrealist painter and poet, James Gleeson’s oeuvre explores the human condition beyond visible reality and the limitations of the senses through powerful enigmas of fleshy biomorphic, mechanical and illusionistic landscape forms. In addition to his contributions to surrealism, throughout his career Gleeson made important contributions to the Australian art world as a dedicated writer, critic and affiliate of a number of art institutions.’ Art Gallery of New South Wales #jamesgleeson #watcheratthethirdgate $3,850.00 AUD
19.01.2022 TILLEY, Peter (1946 - ) A room of one’s own (2012). Cast iron, steel, reclaimed timber sculpture, measures 32.5 cm (h) x 41.5 cm (w) x 16 cm (d), signed and inscribed underneath base, fine condition. Born in Williamstown, Victoria in 1946, Tilley now lives and works in NSW. Tilley received a Certificate of Art and Ceramics from the Newcastle School of Art and Design, NSW and was also privately trained as a sculptor. He was awarded his Master of Philosophy (Fine Art) from New...castle University. Still-life has been the primary focus of Tilley’s recent work and remains a current influence. Drawn to the spatial relationships of scale and context, Tilley continues to investigate the connection of objects and figures as they are precisely staged by the artist. His work investigates the human condition in our contemporary world. He uses animals as avenues for affection, patience and compassion that are not always available in human relationships. They also serve as a metaphor for human behaviour and personality. Tilley’s exhibiting history is extensive, with over 70 group shows and 20 solo exhibitions to his name. He has exhibited in Sculpture by the Sea regularly since 2004, including Sculpture by the Sea, Aarhus, Denmark in 2009 and 2011. #petertilley #aroomofonesown #sculpture $2,200.00 AUD

Fred Williams (1927-1982) is regarded as one of Australia’s most important landscape artists. A fine w...ork from Williams’ period of study at the Chelsea School of Art. This vibrant portrait features on the cover of the significant exhibition catalogue Figures and faces : drawn from life (Heide Gallery, 1983). ‘A portrait from Fred Williams’ London years appears on the cover of this catalogue. It possesses all the spontaneity of observation and sure touch the lucid fluid line of the Music Hall etchings of those years. In the few years before his death he produced a series of portraits of great stature’ Elizabeth Cross, the Introduction to the catalogue. #fredwilliams #louisjames #heidegallery $4,400.00 AUD

His account includes a commentary on the discovery and occupation of the Falklands, with a chapter devoted to their flora and fauna. Bougainville then continued through the Strait of Magellan and entered the Pacific, eventually crossing it from east to west and visiting the Tuamotu archipelago, Tahiti, Samoa, the New Hebrides, the Solomons, and the Louisiade and New Britain archipelagos. His lengthy and lyrical descriptions of Tahiti, depicting it as an earthly paradise, were a major influence on Enlightenment thinkers such as Rousseau and Diderot; the appendix contains a Tahitian glossary. 05.01.2022 WHITELEY, Brett (1939 - 1992) Towards sculpture 5, 1977. London: Ganymed Original Editions, 1977. Lithograph printed black ink on Arches Velin paper, 77.5 x 79.8 cm (image), 90 x 63 mm (sheet), signed lower right, editioned by the artist lower left, stamped with artist’s monogram upper right. Printed in an edition of 50 copies, plus 5 artist’s proofs. Printed at Curwen Studio, London. Framed. Published as the fifth of eight lithographs in the portfolio Towards Sculpture, Eigh...t Studies of the Nude. ‘In the mid-1970s Whiteley made a number of drawings for nude sculpture which he carved from mangrove wood, exploiting the organic, erotic forms of the material and mounting them on geometric Brancusi-like bases. In 1976 he produced a series of sixteen charcoal drawings of the nude viewed from the rear, with the emphasis on callipygous buttocks, progressing from the eloquent single line of a half-buttock to more fully worked tonal modelling of the form. The following year he made a group of eight lithographs of the nude entitled ‘Towards sculpture’, from which this print comes. The series was commissioned by the London print publisher Bernhard Baer of Ganymed Original editions who first befriended Whiteley in 1962 after seeing his paintings at the Whitechapel’s Australian exhibition.’ Coppel, p. 109 In the handwritten introductory notes to Whiteley’s survey exhibition of printmaking at the Art Gallery of Western Australia in 1983, Whiteley writes ‘A good print should have the same feeling of ‘rightness’ that a one-off drawing should have’. He does not elaborate on that this ‘rightness’ is, but it is surely felt in his Towards sculpture series. In these lithographs, Whiteley allows the figure to bend and curve, capturing in a moment the grace of the form. The fifth lithograph is perhaps the most impressive, the woman’s arms stretched high, her curves exaggerated and captured while in motion. Of all his graphic works, Towards sculpture 5 perhaps best demonstrates the ‘rightness’ Whiteley sees in a good print. #brettwhiteley #whiteley #lithograph #towardssculpture #nude #australianart $48,500.00 AUD

02.01.2022 FOLEY, Fiona (1964 - ) Wild Times Call 2001. The complete suite of seven Type C photographs, edition number 4/10, each signed, dated, numbered and inscribed with title verso. Framed in museum timber. In Wild times call, one of Foley’s most critically acclaimed series of photographs, the artists inserts herself within the image, in this case dressed in the traditional clothing of the Seminole people in southern Florida. There is an uneasy familiarity to the works, we are accus...tomed to seeing dark skin in traditional dress, but in this case the subject (Foley) has no personal connection to the Seminole culture. The artist addresses a number of topics with this cultural appropriation, styled in the manner of vintage prints from another era, including the props such as a canoe and dress. Does the view see an individual in such ethnographical portraits, or just a representation of a little known culture? Are there shared or universal experiences felt by first nation cultures in different parts of the world? Can a black woman step outside her cultural heritage and step into another one, or does hers follow with her? Inspired by a fashion shoot published in Oprah Winfrey’s ‘O magazine in September 2000, Wild Times Call raises questions about ethnic identity which are constantly facing indigenous people in Australia and other cultures internationally. #fionafoley #wildtimescall $14,000.00 AUD
