24.01.2022 Did you know that you will likely go into labor on your own after your water breaks? It used to be more common to wait, but here in the US most women get induc...ed once their water breaks. In fact, I had to get these statistics from New Zealand! Waiting, otherwise known as expectant management can be an option provided there are no infections or fever and you maintain strict hygiene (I.e no exams, no tampons, changing pads frequently, no baths, etc.). Pregnant women will continue to make amniotic fluid, so staying well hydrated is important. Thank you Paula Skelton, Midwife @kiwifamilies for making this information available. #FunFacts #SundayStats #makemoreamnioticfluid #neverdrybirth #Yourbodyworkswell #NOEXAMS #expectantmanagement #midwiferycare #birthstreambabyof2020 #birthstreambabyofeveryyear See more

21.01.2022 A Queensland mother and her midwife will feature in an international documentary, investigating an increase in traumatic birth experiences. The documentary fea...tures accounts from many women who say they feel bullied by a heavily medicalised maternity system, with too many interventions. www.7NEWS.com.au #7NEWS

19.01.2022 Brancato et al. and Roberts et al. found that spontaneous pushing leads to greater release of oxytocin, effective uterine contractions, better rotation and descent of the fetal head in the maternal pelvis, rapid progress of labor, and, as a result, increase in spontaneous vaginal delivery. Each of these factors can lead to improved maternal and fetal outcomes A strong Valsalva maneuver causes the mother to increase abdominal pressure, which can result in a pressure higher than that of uterine blood perfusion, thus reducing the uterus-placental blood flow. This effect could alter the oxygen supply available to the fetus and cause fetal acidemia secondary to anaerobic metabolism https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5286842/

16.01.2022 There is a 95% chance that your EDD is NOT going to be the date your baby is ready to be born. For 66% of women their babies will be born within 7 days of their due date. Don’t start the countdown clock at 38weeks as you will go mad. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23932061/

15.01.2022 Fascinating read

15.01.2022 If you have any kind of ‘risk factor’ when you arrive at hospital during labour, usually step one is to put a cardiotograph (CTG) on you. This machine is strapp...ed on with two receivers and waist straps and displays your babies heart rate and your contraction patterns on a print out. The thought is that it would provide a first sign of a developing problem and allow prompt intervention to get your baby out quickly. Problem is that this idea has not proven effective. We’ve know for a long time that when continuous CTG is used on ‘low-risk’ women, the caesarean section rate goes up without improving outcomes for babies and now we know from current research by Small et. al in 2020 that using this machine on higher risk women doesn’t work to improve outcomes either. The link to the study is in my bio, or below for Facebook folk https://www.womenandbirth.org//S1871-5192(19)308/fulltext This is a literature review which looked at 38 different research papers including 11 randomised controlled trials, found that ‘current research evidence does not demonstrate improvements in perinatal outcome for infants born to women at risk of poor perinatal outcome when intrapartum CTG monitoring is used’. So, it’s time to ask ourselves, if it doesn’t work for low risk labour and birth and it doesn’t work for high risk labour and birth, why are we using it at all? Birth unit culture? Litigious coverage?... it’s certainly not for the benefit of women or their babies #ctg #obstetrics #obstetrician #birth @birthsmalltalk

14.01.2022 ......However, the use of prescribed positions to ‘fix’ an OP position is not supported by research (Desbriere et al. 2012; Science & Sensibility). ://midwifethinking.com/tag/positions/?fbclid=IwAR0nGYutALUP4ySWKn-GQ0lFZ03rSG4AeWmMA1BspgUDpRLBIv-a_2spjm0

07.01.2022 The perineal bundle... if you are an Australian woman giving birth THIS is something you need to know about. Here is a graphic of the hospitals using it, is you...r hospital on the list? (Graphic copied from @buntingforbirthrights) Hold onto your perineums because what I’m about to tell you is absolute insanity! In terms of care of a woman while she is pushing her baby out, Australian birth practice is going BACKWARDS! Get all the info you need from @themidwivescauldron podcast episode ‘perineal bungles’ ... basically, if you want a normal physiological birth and to avoid an episiotomy and an increased risk of perineal damage tell your care provider, ‘I do not consent to care according to the perineal bundle’. #birth #perinealbundle #perinealmassage #midwives See more

03.01.2022 BIRTH DAY 31-12-2019 We found out I was pregnant! 22-01-2020 We found out there was FOUR!... 21-07-2020 We met our 4 miracles! 29-09-2020 (TODAY) Our babies are 10weeks old! Every scan I saw and heard 4 strong little hearts beating I saw 4 little bodies that had grown and developed a little more since the last time. It didn’t feel like a dream because my belly grew week by week and I felt them all move everyday. Despite witnessing, feeling and knowing I was growing 4 humans, I struggled to really comprehend the true reality of it. On their birth day I wasn’t nervousI was BLOODY excited! I had been pregnant for 33weeks and 5 days and could not WAIT to meet them! Kahn and I arrived at the hospital at 7am, by 9.30 am I was getting prepped for theatre. The Quads we’re born via a very calm and well executed cesarean delivery by our AMAZING Dr and Team (who monitored my entire pregnancy). I was warned the room could be noisy, cold and overwhelming due to the amount of staff present. But I felt a GOOD kind of numb (from my chest down) and very well cared for. Each step of the operation was explained to me and before I knew it at 11.43am the drape was dropped to reveal our Son. His 3 sisters followed, all born within the next 3minutes.
