25.01.2022 Term 4 in the school year is always a time of endings for Year 12 students. While this year was no exception, it is the case that the advent of external exams has meant some ending rituals have occurred earlier than in the past. For Downlands Year 11 and 12 students, one of these rituals is the Lumière Mass. Bearing a name that links us to the French origins of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, the Lumière Mass is the setting for the ritual passing the light of leadershi...p wisdom from Year 12 to Year 11, inclusive of the naming of the College Leaders for 2021. Enrol now for 2021! #Downlands #Downlander

23.01.2022 John Tyson Doneley Award - for Outstanding Merit Across All Areas of College Life This award is named after John Tyson Doneley, a renowned landowner on the Darling Downs who, in 1902, purchased the then Strathmore and renamed it to Tyson Manor. He occupied the property until 1921 after many refurbishments. Many of his descendants were students and staff at the College, including Father Ignatius Tyson Doneley MSC (OAM). The John Tyson Doneley Award for Outstanding Merit Ac...ross All Areas of College Life recognises students who continue to show the Downlands College community their selfless acts of faith and merit as an allrounder. In 2020, we have been fortunate enough to award this to two students. The Downlands College staff would like to congratulate Michelle Phillips and Angus Koch this year. #iamadownlander #toowoombaschools #boardingschools #queenslandboardingschools

18.01.2022 A lovely Sunday at Middle Ridge Park, home of the Southern Districts Magpies Cricket (SDMC) Club, was the perfect setting for their annual Pink Stumps Day raising money for the Jane McGrath Breast Cancer Foundation. Everyone wore pink and mixed teams of kids/men/women played 5x T-20 games (some alternate (read unusual) adoption of rules meant great fun was had by all) along with raffles, canteen, and more frivolity. Downlanders, Soph Smith along with sister, Jemima, are pla...ying SDMC members and they turned up all in pink alongside super supportive mum and dad, Rachael and Jamie. Soph plays in the Men’s Senior cricket comp. alongside her dad while Jemima plays in the Juniors. Downlander, Mr Adrian Smith, staff member and proud father of three wonderful Downlanders (also an honoured SDMC Life Member and still playing and serving as Captain of B grade), took the field over the weekend and reports that in the first game on Pink Stumps Day, faced a sizzling ball from Soph to be clean bowled so he was happy to be on the same side in the final game. Rachael and Jamie are major sponsors of the club and of Pink Stumps Day, they serve on the committee and Jamie is C grade captain of C grade. The girls have taken the cue from their mum and dad and were awesome in their enthusiasm, conduct and energy. The girls are sensible, mature, and valued members who added much to the fun and in raising of precious dollars for breast cancer research. Well done, Soph and Jemima. Downlands is proud of you. And well done to everyone at SDMC!

17.01.2022 Did you see this? Seaton Robinson current Year 7 student, speaking out about equal opportunities in his chosen sport of Netball. Seaton has high aspirations of making the state age program and beyond, but these dreams are unable to come to fruition with the game being female only from 13 years of age. Seaton would like to see a change in the sport to allow boys to play past the age of 13 and be a co-ed sporting opportunity. #Downlands #downlander #TNA #netball

16.01.2022 Humanitas Award Winner 2020 - Preston Williams This moving award is presented annually in loving memory of Ben Strong, a former Downlands student who passed away in 2006. It represents the highest accolade in the College if we are thinking about ‘goodness’. A ‘humanitas’ outlook recognises that we are not perfect but seeks only, and touches into, the goodness of others, bringing out that goodness. Such an outlook manifests in graciousness and forgiveness and appeals to what... is best in us. It is an outlook borne of humility, understanding and a heartfelt and compassionate concern for people qualities that reflect our Ethos and represent the ‘perfect’ Downlander. This year, we are extremely proud to present the Humanitas award to Preston Williams.

12.01.2022 Entrepreneurial Spirit Alive at Downlands It was fantastic to welcome past students and young entrepreneurs, Tom McPherson and Tom Fu, both Class of 2016, to speak with our Year 11 and 12 Business students. In 2018, Mr McPherson created Motor Culture Australia. Welcoming all car enthusiasts who have a passion for any and all types of motor vehicles this online motoring community hosting awesome events, offering exciting giveaways and exclusive discounts to members. ... Both young men provided insight into the different types of online business models, exploring concepts around what being entrepreneurial means and some of the lessons they have learned while setting up their business being an entrepreneur and much more. It was heartening to hear that a driving force for Motor Culture Australia is about making a positive impact in people’s lives, supporting charities and creating an uplifting, friendly community. Thank you, Tom and Tom, for visiting us yesterday, it is always fantastic to see past students so passionate and creative.. #Downlands #DPSA #Downlander

12.01.2022 Congratulations to Downlands Past Student, Trevor Magei (91-93), who has been selected as ORO Provincial Administrator, Papua New Guinea. ON 25 February 2021 Th...e National reported: Trevor moving Oro forward ORO provincial administrator Trevor Magei is the first to be groomed and raised in Northern. Magei had never worked for any other organisations other than the Oro provincial administration. He joined the public service on July 12, 1994. On Nov 23, 2020 he was selected as the provincial administrator. He was only 20 when he entered the public service. Now at 45, he is one of the youngest to become a provincial administrator. His late father Thomas Magei was from Hangan village, Buka in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville. I hope to shine a light in the lives of others His mother Gwen Suja is from Barevaturu village in Northern. Trevor is the eldest of three brothers and a sister. He also has five other brothers and sisters from his father’s second wife. Dad Thomas was an agriculture and livestock officer while mum Gwen was working with the PNG Banking Corporation, later the Bank South Pacific. Trevor and his siblings spent much part of their childhood in Jiwaka, Western Highlands, Eastern Highlands, and in the National Capital District. Trevor still looks up to his mum as his role model. My mum is my role model to this day. He completed Grade Six in 1988 at the Resurrection Primary School in Northern but could not continue into Grade Seven. His father took him to a boarding school in Australia. He spent 1990 to 1994 at the Downlands College in Towoomba, South Queensland. In 2000, he was selected to undertake a six-month youth development programme under Jica’s fellowship programme. In 2010, he undertook a one-year diploma course in public administration. In 2014, he took up a certificate in project management course at the Kangan Institute of TAFE Colleges in Melbourne. Between 2016 and 2017 he pursued a Bachelor in Public Administration degree at the Divine Word University and graduated in 2018. He is currently doing a Master’s in Business Administration degree at UPNG. He became the coordinator of the provincial disaster centre where he interacted with people, worked on how to address their problems which were far more complex than natural disasters. He was mentored by former administrator Sem Vegogo who in 2017 appointed him as one of his deputy provincial administrators. Trevor witnessed one day how a sick person was carried on a makeshift stretcher by relatives from one of the remote villages in the outskirts of a patrol post that he managed. He arranged for an ambulance but it was too late. When it arrived, the patient looked up at him from his makeshift bed, breathed his last breath, and closed his eyes. It was a devastating and heart-breaking moment for Trevor. It made him want to work harder for the people. His five-year development plan (2018 to 2022) has already been approved. His proposed restructure of the provincial administration is ongoing. He has also secured K14 million for the Oro provincial administration office complex and more than K100 million for three main roads in the province. Trevor is moving ahead with development projects. The people of Oro are already seeing the benefits of his hard work. I have developed a habit of challenging myself to see how much further I can continue in my pathway for the highest in education or the best in my performance and perhaps shine a light in the lives of others.
