24.01.2022 One of the biggest challenges facing people with Down syndrome is stigma and discrimination about intellectual disability. We need change in attitudes, better r...epresentation in the media and positive language used about Down syndrome. This week we provided the Disability Royal Commission with a submission on the Rights and Attitudes issues paper. Read our full submission here. https://www.downsyndrome.org.au//submission-to-the-royal-/

Follow this link to register your attendance and start your fundraising. https://stepupfordownsyndromeperth2020.gofundraise.com.au/ As promised, there is also a virtual option for Step UP this year. 19.01.2022 We understand that many people in our community are very worried about Independent Assessments. We have also heard from some people who think the Assessments wi...ll be helpful because it means they would not have to pay for reports to get access to the scheme. Some of the questions and concerns we have heard so far include: - How will these assessments include all of the contextual information about peoples lives which impact on their support needs? - How will the assessments work for people who might have difficulty when they meet a specialist for the first time? - If someone has a 'stable' disability, why will they need to have these assessments completed not just at access, but also at reviews? - What will happen for people who are non-verbal or are unable to comply with the assessments? We are trying to get more information about the Assessments and provide feedback to the NDIA. You find out more about the Independent Assessments in the NDIS National Disability Insurance Scheme video below. If you have any thoughts about how these changes might impact you - we want to hear from you. Please feel free to contact us at [email protected]. We will be continuing our conversations with the NDIA about the proposed changes and we want to share your views.

08.01.2022 Hi Everybody My name is Naomi Lake and I live in Albany with my family I am a childrens author and Im passionate about inspiring children to read and write Wr...iting has helped me to feel better about myself and developed my creativity. I want children to also be able to lose themselves in a magical world of books or write about their feelings and make their own adventures I think it very important for people to understand more about Down Syndrome especially health professionals. Our voices need to be heard through sharing our experiences. During the pandemic I kept myself busy by exercising with my support worker on FaceTime everyday. We followed my fitness program designed by my exercise physiologist. Plus I got fresh air with my mum by walking through our paddock on our large property. I also have another support worker who assisted me with cooking healthy meals in my Thermomix over FaceTime. Even though my life changed I was able to live a happy and healthy lifestyle.
