25.01.2022 The final week of the 30-Day Challenge has arrived! Have you kept up? A few reports are better than no reports, so use the final activities to collect important plant health data. This week we’re searching for organisms doing the nightshift to observe how light and temperature affect pest activity. Activity 22 Many species increase their nocturnal activity on moonlit nights, hunting or foraging more easily under the light of the moon although risking themselves being ...Continue reading

25.01.2022 Many West Aussies live on or around our coast and enjoy all the ocean has to offer. Be it fishing, water sports, boating or a casual dip on a hot summer’s day, we all need to switch on our Sea Sense so we can enjoy the beach and ocean with confidence. To help beach and ocean goers, the WA Government has one of the most comprehensive shark mitigation programs in the world. The free SharkSmart WA app reached 37,000 downloads and can be checked for shark activity in y...our local area at any time of the day. Maybe you’ve noticed new signs at your local beach, with codes on them? This is our Beach Emergency Number (BEN) sign program. With over 1200 signs up and down the west coast since 2017/18, the BEN signs have a unique code to help pinpoint exact locations and improve crucial emergency response times for any serious incidents, such as fishing accidents, surfing injuries and sharks. Our Shark Monitoring Network (SMN) receiver project is one of the largest and most sophisticated research and public safety projects of its kind, providing vital safety alerts for WA beach users. There are now 34 SMN receivers located along the WA coastline So, beach and ocean lovers, switch on your Sea Sense and download the #SharkSmart WA app now:https://bit.ly/38ed65J See more

23.01.2022 More than 250 grains research experiments across WA, including the aim and lead scientist, can now be easily found with the click of an icon, thanks to a new interactive map. Launched in September, the DPIRD innovation reflects our significant investment in grains research. The trials shown include our collaborative research with external parties, such as the Grains Research and Development Corporation, CSIRO and The University of Western Australia. The map includes trial...s at our research facilities such as Merredin, Carnarvon and Geraldton, as well as many on growers’ properties and laboratory work such as South Perth and Murdoch University. A great resource for growers, consultants and the public alike, it can be used to discover how extensive and diverse grains research is in WA and what is happening on the ground to improve productivity and profitability in the industry. https://bit.ly/3nBNHsW See more

23.01.2022 It’s really about changing the way we do our existing business to become more sustainable. We’d all like to see less plastic around so we used the voucher to explore what else was out there. WA subtropical bananas are thinner skinned and bruise easily, so extra packaging helps protect them on their journey to the consumer. But like many of us, Carnarvon Sweeter Banana, a collective of 20 family-run farms in Carnarvon, was aware of plastic being an issue. They recently used ...a DPIRD program to have desktop research done on what sustainable packaging was available globally. Using the voucher to get the research done pushed us into going to the next step to actively try to solve the problem and do trials on products. Our Agrifood and Beverage Voucher Program helps WA food and beverage manufacturers engage technical experts and business consultants to help their business capture new opportunities for growth. Our current voucher program round is now open. Applications close 5.00pm (AWST) Friday, 11 December 2020. For more information: https://bit.ly/2Sfje62 See more

20.01.2022 This week during Biosecurity Blitz, we’re exploring different habitats to locate pest shelters and hiding places to find out why shelter selection is so important to an organism’s survival. Activity 15 Depending on the species, insect seek shelter from the weather or from predators in a variety of places in crevices in bark, inside holes in trees, inside flowers, fruits or seeds, under rocks and other objects on the ground, and in burrows in the soil anywhere that ...Continue reading

17.01.2022 Celebrating 20 years of a star-studded line-up! . ‘Yardstick’, part of a national sheep sire evaluation project, benchmarks the progeny of a merino ram by comparing measured traits of the progeny in relation to the progeny of other rams entered in the trial. Not only has our department hosted the WA program in partnership with our industry partners, the WA Federation of Performance Sheep Breeders for 20 years, but the national genetic benchmarking program is also the... longest-running in the world. More than 30 measurements are taken from birth to hogget stage (18 months), including regular body weights, eye muscle and fat depth, wool measurements, fleece weight and scoring for a range of easy care and conformation traits. During ram sale season, this data helps buyers make decisions based on what traits they want to breed for and their overall breeding objective. Congratulations to all involved with this world-leading project, including our own amazing and dedicated staff in Katanning! Wondering what’s with the extra tags? These sheep are tagged and identified as part of the requirements for a research trial. https://bit.ly/2ZQAOls

05.01.2022 Behind the packaging you see on the shelf, is a WA business owner hustling to produce the best product they can. Grants are one way our department works to support the growth of WA businesses, either by supporting their expansion, investing in new projects or by helping to reduce risk. Rok Kombucha is one WA company that was able to use a grant to secure their future by purchasing bottling and packaging equipment. This not only reduced their risk, but it also opened opportunities to grow. Have a listen as Amanda talks about her business and also provides her tip for other businesses looking to apply for grants. Our state-wide program supports investment and expansion opportunities for the Western Australian food, beverage and value add processing industry. https://www.agric.wa.gov.au/agribusinessfunds

04.01.2022 Heading north with your best mate this summer? You have your sunnies & sunscreen but have you packed the tick treatment? If you’re travelling in the Kimberley, Pilbara, Gascoyne and northern Goldfields, be aware that a new disease, ehrlichiosis, has been found in dogs in these regions. The disease occurs when an infected brown dog tick bites a dog. Dog owners can help stop this disease from spreading to other parts of Western Australia with these simple steps: Before you go..., see your vet about putting your dog on a tick control program. Check your dogs for ticks regularly (especially around the neck, head, ears, armpits and belly) and carefully remove any ticks. This is important as tick treatments may not always kill the tick fast enough to stop the dog from becoming infected. If your dog gets sick, call a vet. Dogs with ehrlichiosis may stop eating, lose weight, become lethargic, bleed from the nose and may die if not treated promptly by a vet. Before you leave northern WA, check your dog is healthy and fill out the movements notification form at https://bit.ly/3raf53Z. To find out more about ehrlichiosis, visit https://bit.ly/3oZwLxh See more

01.01.2022 As part of our intensive Qfly Spring baiting program, the operations team recently established a new base at Claremont Showground, located within the Quarantine Area. The move has provided the team with adequate space to complete important operational activities such as field team logistics, storage, increased office space and car parking. Almost 300 field staff have been visiting 13,000 properties to complete baiting and surveillance activities. More than 100,000 inspections have been completed and over 250,000 host plants identified as part of the ongoing eradication program. We have employed 9 Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia staff who have been unable to work on activities related to the annual Perth Royal Show. These staff are now undertaking various roles within the response.

01.01.2022 You may see our Queensland fruit fly (Qfly) vehicle driving slowly through your suburb during the next few weeks. The Qfly eradication program is tracking well and set to enter a new phase in an effort to wipe out any remaining wild Qfly in the Quarantine Area (QA). Response personnel will be releasing sterile Qfly via a slow-moving specialised, marked vehicle. Once released, the sterile Qfly are expected to mate with their wild counterparts, resulting in infertile eggs and t...herefore no future hatchings of fruit fly larvae. A key defence in eliminating localised Qfly outbreaks, the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) does not harm beneficial insects or the environment.
