24.01.2022 PREGNANCY INFLUENZA With flu season in full swing, it's time to think about immunisations. Influenza is a highly contagious virus that spreads by contact with fluids from coughs and sneezes. Every year, the flu causes widespread illness in the community, and a new vaccine is developed. Annual vaccination is recommended before the onset of the flu season. ... Getting the flu can cause serious problems when you are pregnant. Even if you are generally healthy, changes in immune, heart, and lung functions during pregnancy make you more likely to get severely ill from the flu. Pregnant women who get the flu are at higher risk of hospitalisation and even death. Severe illness during pregnancy can also be dangerous to your developing baby because it increases the chance of significant problems, such as premature labour and delivery. The flu vaccination can be given at any stage of the pregnancy and is safe for breastfeeding mothers. If you currently have flu-like symptoms (e.g. fever, cough, body aches, headache and fatigue) even if you have already had a flu shot call your GP right away. Doctors can advise on appropriate treatments for flu that are safe to use even during pregnancy. Because pregnant women are at high risk of serious flu complications, it is recommended that they are treated quickly with antiviral medicines if they get flu symptoms. These medicines work best when started within 48 hours of symptoms starting.

18.01.2022 Wondering why pregnancy causes you to urinate more? This is mainly because the blood flow to the woman's kidneys increases by up to 35 to 60%! The extra blood flow makes your kidneys produce up to 25% more urine soon after conception. But don't worry, this increased urine production peaks by about 9 to 16 weeks of the pregnancy, and then it settles down ... If you're sick of walking to the loo every 5 minutes, give us a in the comment section below!

10.01.2022 We've recently come across the supermarket.swap page and we were so impressed! The founder, a mum herself, is passionate about avoiding products which are loaded with sneaky additives and preservatives Whilst we recommend that all parents do their own research, we found this page doing a lot of the groundwork with research and label reading. You may find it interesting Click on the post below for more information ... *Dr Colin Blair - Perth Obstetrician is not endorsing this Facebook page, however, we acknowledge that some parents may find the contents of supermarket.swap helpful.

05.01.2022 MENTAL HEALTH PREGNANCY DURING COVID-19 Having a baby is an emotional experience at the best of times. But during this pandemic, it is understandable that you might feel additional anxiety, worry or stress about your pregnancy, birth or how you will cope as a parent with a new baby For many people, the most challenging thing about this pandemic is being physically isolated from family and friends, especially elderly relatives ! While it is important to help... control the spread of coronavirus in our community, physical isolation is particularly hard for new and expectant parents. Pregnancy and early parenthood is usually a time when accepting help from others is encouraged, but for the time being, receiving visitors may not be possible. Although physical isolation may be challenging, it is important to remember that there are things you can do to look after your mental health during this time: Be kind to yourself. This situation is not ideal or easy, but you will do the best you can. Look after your physical health. Do some gentle exercise, eat nutritious food, drink plenty of water, and prioritise sleep. Stay at home, but stay connected. Call, text or video chat with friends and family. Remember your strengths. Think about when things were hard in the past and the positive steps you took to get through them. Know that its normal to be anxious and worried at a time like this. You are not alone in feeling this way. Focus on what you can control, such as what you read and watch. Consider limiting time on social media if its causing you stress. Get your information from reputable sources. Talk to your GP, midwife or doctor if you have concerns about your mental health
