24.01.2022 Following surgery, patients may be prescribed to use a Triflow device while still in hospital. Using a Triflow involves taking deep, strong breaths every 30 minutes. These inhalations cause the three balls within the device to rise up. The goal is lift all three balls and to hold them up for as long as possible. Using this device assists in encourages breathing deeply to open your lungs and clear any secretions. This is important to prevent chest infection.... How to use the Triflow Incentive Spirometer: 1 Sit on the edge of the bed or sit up as far as you can. 2 Hold the triflow device upright. 3 Exhale and place your lips tightly around the mouth piece. 4 Breathe in as deeply as possiible and at a sufficient rate to move the three balls. Your aim is to lift the three balls and to hold them up as long as possible. 5 Rest then repeat 5-10 times every hour. It is normal to cough after your breathing exercise. #lifeafterwls #vsg #oagb #rygb #weightlosssurgery #triflow #bariatricsurgery #lifeafterbariatricsurgery #wlsaustralia #wlstips @ Sunshine Coast, Queensland

24.01.2022 Following your surgery you may wonder how you can go about enjoying an alcoholic drink socially. It is important to note that alcohol may affect you differently as to how it did before surgery and you may find yourself tipsy after a small amount. While we do not endorse alcohol consumption to excess, we understand that an occasional drink is something many people enjoy, especially during the festive season. We have collated some tips with the help of the lovely dietitians at ...@simplynutrition to help you make the best possible choices should you decide to drink. Tips for when consuming alcohol: - Drink selections could include red wine, white wine (non-sparkling), spirits on the rocks with or without water added. - Avoid fizzy mixers. - Do not use a straw. - Avoid having alcohol on an empty stomach as blood alcohol levels are higher post bariatric surgery. - Try and have any alcoholic beverages after a main meal as this can help to avoid extra nibbles that often occur before dinner when having alcohol. - Ensure that you wait 30mins after meals before drinking. - Limit cocktails. The combination of a sugar sweetened drink and 2+ shots of alcohol is a recipe for dumping syndrome. - Limit mocktails. The very high sugar content (often fruit juices) can cause a dumping episode. #vsgaustralia #wlsaustralia #bariatricsurgery #sunshinecoastweightloss #vsg #wls #sunshinecoast #bariatrictips #wlstips #sleevelife #bariatricpostop #lifeaferwls #drinkresponsibly

22.01.2022 Should I tell people Im having or have had weight loss surgery? We believe that sharing this personal information is your choice and there are pros and cons to each decision. With that said, in order to achieve long term meaningful life changes, social support is critical. Whilst our team will steer and cheer you throughout your weight loss journey, having support from those closest to you will benefit you in both the short and long term. Should you be considering not sharin...g your surgery with the people around you, we would strongly encourage you to give thought to engaging with the team psychologist for ongoing and regular meetings for support. 22.01.2022 Following metabolic surgery patients are at risk of developing a micronutrient vitamin deficiency. This is due to a change in absorption from the stomach and small bowel but also due to a change in diet. The most common deficiencies we see are Vitamin D, B12, Folate and Iron. Other deficiencies that can occur include thiamin, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Zinc, Copper and Calcium. Being deficient in micronutrients can lead to fatigue, lethargy, excess hair loss and more seriously, th...ere have been reported cases of extreme deficiencies causing damage to the nervous system and paralysis. Please remember to take your multivitamins daily and to attend your follow-up appointments so we can check your nutrient levels! #vsgaustralia #wlsaustralia #bariatricsurgery #sunshinecoastweightloss #vsg #wls #sunshinecoast #bariatrictips #wlstips #vitamin #bariatricpostop

21.01.2022 How much should I be eating post-op? This varies from patient to patient and how far along your weight loss surgery you are. 18.01.2022 Now that the warm weather has well and truly set in, swimming is a great way to incorporate exercise into your week. 18.01.2022 Your health, safety and well-being of upmost important to us. Our team and hospital are taking thorough steps to ensure this. The Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital is COVID-19 free and does not treat COVID-19 diagnosed cases. Nor are we treating respiratory illnesses, who may be COVID-19 positive. At this time any patients suffering with respiratory illnesses are being treated at the public tertiary hospital and not at the private hospital (SCUPH) where all surgeries... performed by Dr Askew are undertaken. At James Askew Medical we are taking measures in line with the evolving guidelines and protocols set by the Department of Health and Queensland Health as well as Ramsay Health Care to ensure your wellness and safety. We are offering Telehealth appointments to all and politely request that if you suffer from a cold or flu symptoms, even a runny nose, to not attend any in-person appointments. If you have travelled overseas within the last few week you may not enter the hospital. This is in-line with Ramsay Hospitals COVID-19 policy. Precautions taken in our consulting suites include: * Offering Telehealth appointments for all members of our Care Team (Dr Askew, Dieticians Kate and Bethany, Psychologist Nicky and Administration staff Kye and Amy) * Cleaning of surfaces such as counters, desks, eftpos machines, clipboards and pens between each patient attending our rooms * Hand sanitiser, soap and water facilities, tissues and disposable cups accessible for every patient. At this stage, all elective surgeries are continuing to go ahead as planned. However this may change depending on how COVID-19 impacts the community and the workers at the hospital. Should there be a need to reschedule any surgical procedures our rooms will be in contact with you as soon as possible. Best wishes, The Team at James Askew Medical. #covid19 #bariatricsurgery #sunshinecoast #washyourhands #coronavirusupdate

17.01.2022 Many patients will experience taste changes after surgery. Generally this occurs with sweeter tasting foods becoming too sweet but some people report that they no longer can tolerate very spicy foods, or now desire a lot of heat to their meals when previously they had not. 16.01.2022 One of the best stories in clinic this week was hearing how one of our patients had never really played kickball with his kids. 14.01.2022 James has been busy in the kitchen! Delicious stuffed Amalfi Baked Lemons - A Jamie Oliver creation from Jamies Italy, adapted. RECIPE // - Line an oven tray with greaseproof paper and preheat your oven to 210c. - Wash and dry lemons and slice pointy ends off the top and base, being careful not to slice right through you want the lemons to collect the cooking juices and not leak away. But still want them to stand without rolling to the side when stuffed!... - Slice each lemon in half and try your best to scoop out the inside being careful not to pierce the base. - In each lemon half, place a slice of mozzarella in, 2 large or 4 small basil leaves on top. Follow that with 2 pieces of oven-roasted tomatoes l. Add a sliver of anchovies, a sprinkling of crumbled dried chilies if you desire and finish off with another layer of mozzarella. - Bake for 10 - 15 minutes till the cheese meltsEnjoy! @ Sunshine Coast, Queensland See more

13.01.2022 Recently a few of our patients have spoken of roller skating being one of their non-scale victories that they are working toward. Roller skating is a great aerobic exercise. Moderate roller skating and rollerblading for 30 minutes will increase the average skaters heart rate from 140-160 beats a minute. Because the movement of skating is fluid, it can be found to impact the joints of the body less than running or more traditional aerobic / cardio workouts.... 09.01.2022 The one anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB), is also know as the mini gastric bypass, Omega loop bypass or single-loop gastric bypass. The OAGB is performed via laparoscopic surgery. Similar to the Roux-en-Y (RYGB) the stomach is divided to create a new small stomach pouch. The small intestine is then joined (anastomosed) to the new pouch with food bypassing the majority of the stomach as well as up to 200cm of small bowel. No stomach is removed, and thus the procedure can... be revised or reversed. The advantage of the OAGB is that there is only one anastomosis. This decreases the risk of developing an internal hernia, a potential complication of the RYGB, which has two anastomoses. In addition, The anastomosis between the stomach and small bowel is larger thus enabling food to enter the small bowel easily. The larger join enables less restrictive eating habits. However due to the strong metabolic effects average weight loss following the surgery is just an impressive as the RYGB. Following a OAGB there is a slightly higher risk of developing post-operative vitamin and micronutrient deficiency making post-operative multivitamin compliance and follow up especially important. #oneanastomosisgastricbypass #OAGB #minigastricbypass #Omegaloopbypass #singleloopgastricbypass #wls #wlseducation #bariatricsurgery #bariatricsurgeryeducation #multivitamin #sunshinecoastweightloss #sunshinecoast

08.01.2022 Dog tired? Maybe you need more protein! Protein helps your body in a number of ways after your surgery. It maintains and builds muscle mass that is essential for weight loss. Because of your low calorie diet, you are already at risk for reduced muscle mass. This is something that we monitor post-operatively using our body composition scales.... If your body does not receive enough protein from outside sources, it will break down even more of your muscle mass to compensate. Protein also helps your body heal from the surgery and wound itself. Other benefits include healthier skin, nails, and hair. Protein fills you up for longer periods of time, so you will find yourself less hungry between meals. After surgery your dietitian will discuss with you your individual needs, however, as a general rule, 60-70 grams of protein a day is a good goal. #vsgaustralia #wlsaustralia#bariatricrecipes #bariatricsurgery#sunshinecoastweightloss#weightlossteam #vsg #wls#wlscooking #wlstips#sunshinecoastfitness #bairatrictips #protein #chocolatelabsofinstagram #labrador @ Sunshine Coast, Queensland

While the Australian Medical Associations (AMA) Obesity Awareness Week comes to a close today, the focus on simple ways that everyday habits can be swapped for healthier outcomes should not be forgotten. 02.01.2022 Did you know that being overweight significantly increases your risk of 11 different types of cancer? These include breast (post-menopause), bowel, kidney, liver, endometrial, ovarian, stomach, oesophagus, gallbladder, pancreas and prostate (advanced) cancers. Excess body weight increases insulin resistance, which leads to the pancreas producing more insulin. Elevated levels of insulin-like growth factor 1 can promote the growth of cancer cells. Excess body weight can also increase sex steroid hormones, which are linked to endometrial and post-menopause breast cancer.
