25.01.2022 We are so pleased to share the new directions for compassionate, humane care for people who have attempted suicide and those affected by suicide, shared yesterday. Professor Myf Maple and I, as well as a team of University of New England, AU post-doc researchers are proud to have played a small part in working on background for this new direction. Most importantly we send out thanks to the 1600+ people who took part in our Lived Experience of suicide survey which helped info...rmed these reports. That the Prime Minister specifically mentioned yesterday. The generosity you have shown to share your experiences to improve the care of people in the future is incredibly brave. #suicideprevention #livedexperience #compassionfirst https://www1.health.gov.au//mental-national-suicide-preven

24.01.2022 During the first wave of COVID I threw myself into writing as a way to fill the void. And last week, during National missing persons week, this was published. 2019/20 have been immeasurably hard for me, as I know it has been for others. So I hope that by sharing my wonkiness it’s a reminder that behind the facades and the titles and the outputs we’re all muddling along.... Thanks to my friend Dr Mim Fox for turning up at the right time with her writing magic...

23.01.2022 Sydney Health has been sharing an anonymous online survey over the last month to understand the experiences of people who go missing and return. 50 people have ...already shared their story and we would love to hear more to develop support services to provide care when people come back. In order to develop better understanding about the role of police working alongside health professionals the hidden stories of returned missing people are so integral, to ensure their voice is heard. You can complete the anonymous survey, share it with a family member or friend, or within your organisation at: https://sydneyhealthsciences.au1.qualtrics.com//SV_0Cdb1IA

21.01.2022 This is the final episode, of Season 1, of What's missing by Missing Persons Advocacy Network - MPAN. Here Dr Jodie Ward speaks about DNA matching of unidentified remains, given there are hundreds in Australia awaiting their journey home to families. I'm happy this project is being funded, and that its being led by a compassionate and skilled professional, I hope that those families who find out news are well supported around Australia. 19.01.2022 Hi friends Ill be on Hack on triple j at 545 tonight (Sydney time) discussing the anniversary of the disappearance of Looking for Théo Hayez and my new research survey trying to uncover the stories of those who return, so that we actually have a chance to reduce the rate of #missingpersons https://sydneyhealthsciences.au1.qualtrics.com//SV_0Cdb1IA

18.01.2022 One of my amazing phd students shared her lived experience of Crohn’s disease, for International day of People with Disability. Faces, and stories, and sharing, and insight. More of this is needed in the media #representationmatters

18.01.2022 A visual representation of parenting the first week back at school - somewhere between being dumped in the waves and calm paddle boarding. With no way out but through #solidarity

16.01.2022 Welcome to 2021 - did you know that the rate of people going missing is now over 40000 cases each year in Australia! 16.01.2022 CW: Suicide Tomorrow is #WorldSuicidePreventionDay. As well as shining a light on suicide prevention, we wanted to remind you of the resources and support avail...able to us when we're struggling. One such resource we're really proud of is 'You Are Not Alone'. This online channel can help you through, if you're caring for someone who has attempted suicide, or is at risk of doing so. Do you care about someone who has tried to take their own life? Head to sane.org/you-are-not-alone where you can learn how to look after them and yourself.

16.01.2022 Some beautiful reflections on the moment of waking, before awareness.

14.01.2022 I’ve been a proud social worker from way back - my recent article in The Conversation even talked about the ways in which social work has the capacity to understand crime and risk issues in a holistic way. 14.01.2022 Important for us to make sure the victims know that we hear them and see them and stand by them.

12.01.2022 #missingpersons who return: this month Ive heard from 39 people who came back from being missing. Almost all said they went because of significant emotional distress that made it hard for them to stay, and that when they were found they needed support. The majority said the support wasn't specific to what they needed. We can do better, if we know more. If you are, or know of someone who went #missing this simple survey offers them a voice. To help shape what we understand missing to be - outside of simply being lost and found. Please share: https://sydneyhealthsciences.au1.qualtrics.com//SV_0Cdb1IA

11.01.2022 Young Aboriginal women are statistically more likely to go missing in Australia than any other population group - yet the media rarely profile those stories and research hasn’t been invested in understanding the social and emotional well-being of young women who vanish and return. We have one culturally sensitive report from 2006, but that’s it. One of the National Health and Medical Research Council - NHMRC projects I work on is looking at the throughcare needs of Aborigina...l women leaving custody. Some work coming out of UNSW is looking at the pathways between missing, juvenile justice and prison and how we need to disrupt the pipeline. If you want to keep up to date on incarceration inequalities the #justjustice project in Croakey - independent, in-depth social journalism for health is your go-to. Read more, think more, talk up more. #blacklivesmatter https://croakey.org/justjustice-tackling-the-over-incarcer/

11.01.2022 Have you, or someone you know, ever gone missing and come back? We would love to hear your thoughts about what you needed when you came back - so we can identify what good support might look like. #missingpersons #IMCD2020... https://bit.ly/2ZxSWkB

06.01.2022 It’s International Day of People with Disability. This month I’ve had three higher degree research students finish up their studies providing new evidence to better support people with disability, and while that’s great, the better part is that these students are a part of the growing, strong research workforce of people with lived experience researching to add voice to community, their community. Representation matters - not just in advertising, in media, in literature but a...round board room tables, policy discussions and research labs. And this isn’t a ‘aren’t they inspirational’ post but a recognition that all spaces need to be accessible, and if you aren’t calling inaccessibility out as an able bodied person, then you’re contributing to the problem with your silence. #livedexperience #ecrchat #nothingaboutuswithoutus

04.01.2022 I love Too Peas In A Podcast and this episode is so important when thinking about what mental health ‘looks’ like, and what happens when we limit awareness of disability - physically and psychologically. Dee shares her #livedexperience beautifully.

02.01.2022 As a close to missing persons week I got the chance to write for The Conversation about what it might look like to see health services and police collaborate when someone is missing. Big thanks to my twitter colleague Lorna Ferguson at Western University for writing across different time zones the last few nights. Now we rest. #nmpw2020

01.01.2022 All the way back in March I went to the top secret recording studios of Casefile: True Crime Podcast to be interviewed by Missing Persons Advocacy Network - MPAN What’s missing series. I spend a really long time talking about who I am, why I do this work, what I’ve learnt and why I think we need to do more. Enjoy
