18.01.2022 If anyone is looking for a bit of expert training in Microsoft Office products, this seems like a pretty good deal. https://www.lifehacker.com.au//deals-this-microsoft-offic/
15.01.2022 So, there have been a few leaks of email addresses and passwords making the headlines in the last few weeks. There is a site you can go to to check if your details are part of any of the leaks :- https://haveibeenpwned.com/ Don't panic if it says you are on it. I am too :-) I reckon you will be the exception if you are not. If you are like me, you will have used the same email address and password on a ton of different websites, which is exactly what you're not supposed to do.... Most of those sites would hold limited data on you anyway, so don't stress. The issue is if you are still using that email and password for important sites that you use now and hold lots of your data. The best thing to do it to identify the main websites you use e.g. Facebook, LinkedIn, Banking, Paypal, Gmail, Dropbox, Apple ID (iTunes) etc, and make sure you set up 2 factor authentication on those. 2 factor authentication just links your mobile phone number to the account so that any changes to the site will have to be authenticated by a code sent to your phone. This is probably the best way to secure your data on these sites until someone comes up with a better, easier way than passwords :-)
13.01.2022 I have heard from a couple of people now about an old porn extortion email scam doing the rounds. First thing to do is not to panic. It's just a scam. They will have picked up an email address and password from a hacked site a few years ago. Most likely LinkedIn, but there were a few others. The scams works by convincing you they have hacked your computer and have compromising video of you taken from your webcam. None of this is true. All they have is your email and an old pa...ssword. If you are still using the password. Please change it now. Here is an old article on it, but it still looks accurate https://www.northernstar.com.au//new-sophisticate/3470994/ Do not click on any links in the email, and do not reply to it. You can forward it to [email protected] which will allow information to be collected about where the scam originates from and will help to get them blocked. You can check if your email has been compromised on https://haveibeenpwned.com/ If you have been using the same email for a while, you will almost certainly appear on one or more data hacks, but again, don't worry too much unless you are still using the old password. For all the important sites you use, please activate Two Factor Authentication, which will send a text to your mobile to confirm your identity. I would also consider using a password manager like Lastpass https://www.lastpass.com/ which will allow you to generate and store secure passwords for sites across all platforms, computer, phones, tablets etc.
12.01.2022 If you have a child at school, college or university, remember they are entitled to a free copy of Microsoft Office. You will need access to their email account (it ends *edu.au), but you can then get the full Office suit for free. You may be able to install this on up to 5 devices (PCs, Macs, tablets etc) https://www.microsoft.com//ed/products/office/default.aspx
09.01.2022 Just a heads up to anyone running a small business out there that has a registered business name. I received a letter in the post about the renewal of my business name. It had my name, business name, address and ABN number. All information available on the ASIC site. It is a scam. Business Name renewals will be notified through ASIC and renewed through ASIC. Anyway, this one is pretty convincing, so watch out. You can check if your business name is due for renewal at www.asic.gov.au/bn-renew
