24.01.2022 In honour of all those hard working pollinators out there transferring pollen from the male part of a flower to the female part. This week is Australian Pollinator Week, to bring awareness of the importance in protecting and maintaining greater diversity of pollinator habitats in urban areas. #bushregeneration #australianpollinatorweek #naturesbalance #dragonflyenvironmental #pollinators

23.01.2022 Enfield frog ponds have been constructed to supply habitats for the endangered Green and Golden Bell frog. To maintain a healthy and natural breeding ground for these little fellas, maintenance work has been conducted to improve the water quality and healthy habitat with natural regeneration and control with removal of noxious and environmental weeds. But there is one native plant that is regarded as an environmental weed that we have been removing from the ponds. Azolla, a...n aquatic, free-floating Australian native fern that is common in waterways and used as a decorative feature in garden ponds. The tiny scale like leaves is able to undergo rapid reproduction by the elongation and fragmentation of the small fronds, given it’s ideal condition it’s biomass may double every 3-10 days, forming dense mats covering areas of water causing less aeration, lower temperatures and reduce access for any frog or tadpoles. With consistent follow-up and removal of Azolla we are watching the habitat flourish. #ggbf #azolla #bushregen #healthyecosystem #happyfrogs #dragonflyenvironmental @ Strathfield South See more

21.01.2022 First day of spring and what a day it was. The wild flowers rising from the earth in bright bloom, winds are warm with the promise of warmer days ahead. But with the warmer weather lead us into bush fire season. Working at Attunga Reserve for Pre-burn preparation, clearing pathways and containment lines, cutting back overhanging vegetation, and woody weeds ready for the RFS to do the burn. 20.01.2022 The grass has gone gangbusters along the banks of Parramatta River at Settlers Park. With mats of grass covering the ground that hinder the potential growth of Saltmarsh species. A highly disturbed area, the Mangroves are dying off due to too much disturbance from the River Cat, larger boats and nutrients from construction and pollution.Manually removing, Ehrharta longifolia, Ehrharta recta that are annual and Lolium perennein, that grows wild and seeds in winter, come summer they disappear. Removing the grass weeds helping the native species Austral seablite (Suaede Australia) and Warrigal greens (Tetragonia tetragonioides) fight back. #fightforyourright #bushregeneration #cityofrydecouncil #saltmarsh #dragonflyenvironmental @ Putney

18.01.2022 Keeping a safe distance on a tiny island in the middle of The Lakes of Cherrybrook. Working and restoring the Blue Gum High Forest, canoes as our transportation, removing the rapidly growing Crofton weed, Paddy’s lucerne and woody weeds that threaten the ecological community. The Blue Gum High Forest is listed as a critically endangered ecological community. Since the European settlement and the ever expanding city we live in, only a small amount of the forest remains intact. It is important to protect and rehabilitate, and thankfully national listings such as the #EnvironmentProtectionandBiodiversityConservationAct1999 and #nswthreatenedspecies 995 help prevent its decline. #hornsbycouncil #ecologicalcommunity #bushregeneration #dragonflyenvironmental #canoesastransport #bluegumhighforest #threatenedspecies

17.01.2022 National Endangered Species Day! On the night of the 7th of September 1936, the last Tasmanian tiger (Thylacinus cynocephalus) died in Hobart Zoo sending the species extinct. Threatened Species Day was declared in 1996 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the death of the last remaining Tasmanian tiger. Today most species become threatened because of habitat destruction and the invasion of non-native species. With knowledge and management almost all threatened species can... be protected. See how you can help today! https://www.environment.nsw.gov.au//saving-our-species-new See more

13.01.2022 Happy National Wattle Day! The time of the year where the much loved and recognised plant explodes throughout the bushland with vibrant golden blossoms blooming. A wonderful and rich, sweet floral aroma fills the air and alludes to the seasons changing. National Wattle Day was first celebrated in 1910 and during the First World War (1914-1918), sprigs of Wattle was sold to raise money for the troops. In 1988 the Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha) was officially gazetted as A...ustralia’s national floral emblem. The genus Acacia, commonly known as Wattle belongs to the family Mimosaceae. There are some 1350 species of Acacia found throughout the world and close to 1000 of these are to be found in Australia. Acacia has thrived on the Australian continent for 35 million years, resilient to drought, wind and bushfire. This iconic plant is not only our National floral emblem but a representation of unity and resilience. Australia’s first people used acacias for a wide range of purposes. The wood, pollen and sap from the trees was transformed into food, medicine, weapons, tools, musical instruments, glues, dyes, perfumes and ceremonial decoration. Blooming in spring, the golden flowers also signified seasonal events such as whales arriving on the coast or eels appearing in rivers. #nationalwattleday2020 #dragonflyenvironmental #bushtucker #wattle #nature

06.01.2022 I remember as a kid, grabbing your cardboard boxusually your Dad’s beer carton and racing down the dunes with your mates to see just how fast you could fly. Looking at the destruction that is happening along the coastline, raging surf, strong winds eating away and eroding the sand dunes. So when you get to work on site such as Dee Why beach where the dunes system is intact you see just how important the ecosystem is. Supporting the valuable community of plants by protectin...g the undisturbed vegetation that remains. Restoring and revegetating what has been lost. Such a beautiful location and uplifting day to call this work. Removal of weeds such as Asparagus fern that mats and creates a more rigid land mass and Bitou bush that roots deep into the sand and prevents native plants to regenerate. Restoring and revegetating what has been lost. The Incipient dune is filled with native vegetation such as Spinifex and Carpobrotus glaucescens (Pig face) that acts like fingers to grab and hold onto the sand, resisting erosion. #beacherosion #dragonflyenvironmental #deewhybeach #keepingthebeachessafe @ Deewhy Beach See more

05.01.2022 With a curious mind walking through the bushland you may encounter a cluster of fan-shaped fungus, Trametes versicolor more commonly known as Turkey tail. A member of the polypore family, this fungus plays an important role by decomposing dead trees. The mycelium an the extensive network of spider-web-like fibers absorb nutrients for the fungus, breaks down the lignin portion of deadwood, leaving behind cellulose that is white and stringy in appearance. Creating white rot ...that returns nutrients back to the soil, where they may be accessed by plants. Researchers have also found that the turkey tails are capable of decomposing some man-made substances, and studies are being conducted using the fungi for the decomposition of industrial dyes used for textiles, and a variety of wastewater treatments. Turkey tail is also a medicinal mushroom, steeped to make a tea, it has a variety of powerful antioxidants and other compounds that may help boost your immune system. #fantasticfungi #decomposingtrees #gottalovenature #dragonflyenvironmental See more

01.01.2022 Today we were saving the bush tucker! Working along the rivers edge at Putney, taking in the not so generous breeze and the hot sun, grateful to be working close to the water and shelter from the trees. Carefully removing Atriplex prostrata, mainly found in wet somewhat saline situations. The environmental weed is growing amongst regenerating native Saltmarsh species, Suaeda australis (also known as seablite) and Tetragonia tetragonioides (Warrigal greens). Suaeda australis can be eaten fresh, the edible leaves are salty with a light, crunchy texture, great in salads. Tetragonia tetragonioides are great source of vitamin c & iron. #bushtucker #cityofrydecouncil #putney #nativeplants #dragonflyenvironmental #bushregeneration
