25.01.2022 Spreading joy during the lockdown. With weddings and other big events cancelled due to COVID-19, those in the flower business have been struggling to survive.... But it hasn't stopped Sydney events florist Debbi Weiss from doing her part to make people smile. She and other florists are gifting bouquets of flowers to front-line health workers, like the medicos manning the COVID-19 testing clinic at Bondi Beach. They've also been leaving flowers in random spots to bring some unexpected joy, using the hashtag #lovefeelgoodflowers. "We deliver to the COVID workers or the hospitals, or aged care facilities, also nursing homes, palliative care homes, child care centres," Debbi said. "At the moment, everybody is very anxious and nervous and uncertain about what is going on, so the flowers connect us to nature, to beauty, they have a certain magic that you just can't get any other way, so it's been a wonderful initiative." Watch the whole story this Sunday at 12.30 on ABC TV + iview. : Sean Murphy

25.01.2022 I’m almost finished and ready to open up my new floral emporium in Bronte It’s been such a busy few weeks, and I can’t wait to officially open the doors. The shop is called Hello Bronte and my vision for the space is to include all sorts of artisan makers, Australian designed, and small batch handcrafted special treasures - all with a relationship to nature and flowers... I’ve slowly EATEN my way through the incredible collection of neighbouring cafès and restaurants Here are my favourites... when you visit try these: (maybe not all on the same day...) lamingtons @huxtons hot chips at @thecharrotisserie croissants @iggysbread_downunder coffee @calipressjuice açai bowls @bowldout salads @pilgrimsbronte harissa pumpkin @threeblueducks chicken tikka at Natraj Indian And at the end of a tough day, we have @camperdowncellars just across the road! I’m intending to officially open mid August, because the website and POS system, signage, packaging, more stock, is still coming - so for now, I’m still doing home deliveries and online orders and open by appointment Weddings and events are still happening and being booked via @dragonflyfloraldesign, in fact I have a very large wedding this week in #doublebay - all COVID safe and very strictly managed! I look forward to welcoming you into my new spacecome and see the opening week - I will have a surprise maker in my window to DELIGHT you while you wait in the queue for your croissant at Iggys You can follow the goings on at @hello.bronte Debbixx #bronte #newfloristshop #sydneyflorist #fineartflorist #artisan #underthefloralspell #blooooms #bondibeach #brontebeach #bellevuehill #rosebay #woollahra #tamarama #randwick #waverley #sydneyeasternsuburbs @ Bronte, New South Wales, Australia

24.01.2022 This is one of the best things Ive done in my career. Its hard to explain the joy I have felt being able to give flowers away to people - they dont know me, they dont really know where the flowers are from - its just been a random surprise theyve found on their daily rounds! A few people have responded and posted to their social media using the hashtag #lovefeelgoodflowers which has been lovely to see and read their responses I have set up a small crowdfunding camp...aign, which enables me to purchase the flowers that I can share amongst a group of florists to distribute around Sydney. As a result, weve been able to deliver to Camden Hospital, Prince of Wales hospital, St Josephs Palliative Hospital, Covid19 testing units in Bondi and Double Bay Doctors. Quite a few wonderful colleagues have jumped on board in Sydney, including: Popette Studio @buttercupfloralsau LS flower design Blooms by George Blooms by Elle @missfleuriste Clouds & Sweetgrass @theposyroom Floral Artistry By Yvonne Blumette Biophilia Blooms

22.01.2022 Two seconds ... and scroll I was listening to a podcast on @theflowerpodcast with @alajamie today talking about all things social media... and that we have 2 seconds to make an impression on instagram before we get scrolled into oblivionhmmmm... It got me thinking.... So many of us have fallen into this habit. How many of us stop and process the things we see? How many of us stop to consider the skill, effort, time, artistry, thought, meaning, capability and intention, learning, that has been poured into whatever it is we are looking at on our screens If you know anyone making or doing amazing things, tag them below I’d love to hop over to some new insta accounts and to look at a few inspiring images for more than two seconds, and to give out some positive comments This pic is a bridal bouquet I made this week DRESS | @lillimarcs PLANNER | @theweddingcollaborator MUA | @louiseantonjuk_mua HAIR | @belindahairstylist PHOTOGRAPHER | @danielkukecphotos #sydneyflorist #sydneywedding #sydneyweddingvendors #sydneyweddingflorist #studioflorist #petalsandprops #alltheprettyflorals #preservedflower #weddingbouquet #bridalbouquet #bridalflowers #caramelpalette #quicksandroses #toffeeroses #kudos #makersofinstagram #fineartflorist

21.01.2022 I really enjoyed this one - especially designing this magnificent chuppah in this BOLD AND UNIQUE palette!

21.01.2022 I trust you. Just 3 little words that mean so much This wedding planning happened fairly quickly - I was contacted a little over a month ago by the mother of the bride. At the time, I was moving house, moving my business into a new space, and dealing with all the admin of booked clients COVID related postponements. A very stressful time for me.... BUT... I had done the wedding of another family member, so when she asked me to do her daughters wedding, I couldnt say no.... The design of the chuppah canopy started from an image she showed me. I suggested that we do something really UNIQUE by adding in a huge MASS OF BABYS BREATH behind the couple instead of just the standard cover the poles situation. Having no image reference for this, they had to trust me. And they did. When a client says to me - I trust you, I can go into my creative zone and design something new and MAGICAL instead of following a paint-by-numbers approach. For me, this is when my best design work is produced. I was pretty chuffed with this one, but the best thing to come of it, was knowing that the client trusted me to go for it! A big thank you to my team on the day Alena @gentle_flowers , Nicola @flowers.by.nicola and Jenny @studioblume @ Sydney, Australia See more

21.01.2022 I am supporting local artisans, and local growers this year for Mothers DayDue to #iso and #covid_19 so many of us have had a lot of upheaval so my #mothersday collection is about SUPPORT, BALANCE, LOVE, and COMFORTIve made an ethical decision to ONLY USE LOCAL FLOWERS and these will be available in huge bundles - perfect for you to share with a few friends, or if you love masses of flowers, keep them all! Many people have 3 or 4 mums, nanas, mothers in law, carers, and ...even dads... they want to give flowers to everyone - so this is the perfect option Ive also teamed up with a wonderful local artisan ceramicist @samantharobinsonporcelain for som of her exquisite vases and votive holders combined with my everlasting posy arrangementsand finally, I added in a cookbook by my favourite Aussie sisterhood sensations... @mondaymorningcc who have just released their 4th book and its pretty spesh! Ive had a long hard thing about what to offer in my Mothers Day collection this year and its a bit differentlike everything at the moment Debbixx @ Bellevue Hill, New South Wales, Australia

20.01.2022 Reflecting on this day We’re coming into a hugely busy period, with so many carried forward events (from earlier in the year)now happening as the COVID rules have relaxed There are many new rules to follow when organising an event, but it seems that many families have made the decision to JUST CELEBRATE rather than wait till they can have 350 of their nearest and dearest in a function center Small events are now very de-rigeur and ACCEPTABLE..! In fact they are really ver...y nice! Repost from @danielkukecphotos using @RepostRegramApp - Coming soon. She creates artwork from old lipsticks and makeups, and combines these with linen swatches to make beautiful works. 19.01.2022 Centerpiece Perfection A centerpiece is so central to the overall ambience you want to create at your eventFor this wedding, we were asked to design something with a tropical feel, but combining with the old world elegance of this stately and gorgeous venue @dunbarhousewatsonsbay the pedestal vase is an exclusive design that we designed and custom made for our events

19.01.2022 Many anemones say it ten times fast Anemones are one of my favourite spring flowers and they last really well as long as you keep the water level low, and keep them away from direct sun. They will open during the day, and close at night for the first few days... then they stay open for another week or two depending on the quality and freshness #anemones #underthefloralspell #risingtidesociety #sydneyflorist #supportsmallbusiness #bellevuehill #rosebay #doublebay #bronte #vaucluse #tamarama #waverley #randwick #woollahra #pointpiper

15.01.2022 Meet my new HYBRID designs Ive been wanting to do these forever! Its a bit out there - but Im really proud of this idea of combining the everlasting mix of dried, preserved, and artificial flowers TOGETHER with fresh foliage I construct the CORE of this arrangement using wired and taped everlasting blooms they are bound with waterproof tape, and then collared with fresh foliage lightly secured with twineThe arrangements come in a vase with water and DO NOT ...USE ANY FLORAL FOAM. After the foliage has died, the everlasting blooms can be saved and reused! Available online now in various colours, and also for weddings and events #nofloralfoam #underthefloralspell #flowers #preservedflower See more

15.01.2022 Local flower love yes, this is what Im doing this year for Mothers Day! Its crazy to think that usually at this time of year, Id be in full wedding season swing ... buying thousands of stems of bridal blooms and having my weekends filled with event set ups.. I hope I can remember how to do it when they start again! Anyways, for now, Im loving the support from all the locals for the flower buckets, bouquets, and online flowers that Ive been promoting its helped m...e to feel like I can keep some of my favourite growers happy by continuing to buy from them seeing as all my wedding orders have dried upFor Mothers Day, I am FULLY SUPPORTING local growers only .... no imports This bouquet is a sample of my drive-by pick up Mothers Day bouquets featuring local double tulips, local Mum chrysanthemum, local roses, local delphinium and stock. Classic green and white to suit every home! They are ONLY AVAILABLE if you pre-order by DM or text message and they are $65 or double upsize to $120

14.01.2022 DELIVERY DAY What does our typical wedding DELIVERY DAY look like? Usually I get started at 6:30am or so, making all the bouquets and buttonholes and personal flowers FRESH ON THE DAY. Binding them, packaging them, and getting some quick photos, I usually finish by 8:30 or so and then my team arrives to help pack the van and finish arrangements if necessary... Packing the van can sometimes take an hour - as we need to carefully add boxes of styling items/candles/linens/mirrors etc and then stack arranged flowers and buckets of flowers for on-site installation work - along with ladders and toolkit, and all the paraphernalia we will need on site!the logistics and lists are ridiculous sometimes! We head off around 11:00am to deliver bridal flowers, then head to the ceremony venue to set up I usually allocate 2-3hours for this including traveling. Each set up can get messy, so we always need to add time to make sure its all cleaned up and ready for SHOWTIME Setting up the reception varies depending on whats involved - and usually requires a fair bit of Co-ordination between ALL vendors, venue, and deliveries. It can be very stressful if 8 vans arrive for deliveries and theres no parking available.... especially when you have a van full of fresh flowers or cakes and desserts! This is the sort of issue that can be AVOIDED when a planner or co-ordinator is involved After setting up the reception, we head off for a few hours rest or to the next set up..... and return later at night to bump out and pick up all the vases and styling items. Sometimes, I choose to book a separate bump out team, as we can be super exhausted by this stage Next day or during the week we have the clean up crew who clean, count, check, pack all the equipment used at the wedding Big weddings and events involve hundreds of hours of planning and preparation, spread across many many people.... the labour and logistics are huge - but its so exciting seeing it all come together when its planned well See more

14.01.2022 Wow... mothers day flowers were really popular this year - the growers actually ran out of flowers!! FLOWER TIPS: 1. keep your flowers in clean fresh water, away from direct sun, skylight, wind, or airconditioning. 2. snip stems every 2-3 days and refresh the water.... 3. some flowers will die off before others - so just take them out of the arrangement, and put the longer lasting ones in a new smaller vase. 4. if a bouquet arrives with a binding/twine holding it together, DON'T take it off! Just cut down the stems to suit the vase you have at home. 5. if you don't have the right size vase, take off the twine binding, and separate the flowers to suit the vases you DO have. THANK YOU to ALL THE LOVELY LOCAL CLIENTS who ordered flowers from me this year and happy belated mother's day to all of the gorgeous mums out there!

13.01.2022 In case you still want to order mothers day flowers... we have these gorgeous bouquets available - LOCAL PICK UP only. You just drive past my studio in Bellevue Hill, and we will run the bouquet out to your car - VALET style! No waiting, no hassles.... YOU MUST PRE-ORDER BY 7PM tonight to guarantee availability. https://www.dragonflyfloraldesign.com.au//mother-s-day-spe

13.01.2022 Classic green and white This wedding was a combination of fresh and artificial flowersit can help with keeping costs down, minimizing waste, creating something big and bold without needing a huge set up time on site. We always discuss this option with our clients and although most of our wedding and event work uses FRESH flowers, it’s becoming more popular to add in an artificial component to bump up the look without bumping up the price. As always, the team at @thebl...ueroombondi make it super easy to set up and bump out. 08.01.2022 AIMEE AND STEVEN were my first COVID casualties and had to move their wedding date from first week of April to mid-November It was a difficult time with their family coming from interstate and not knowing if they’d be able@to share the wedding with them - but in the end, Friday 13th became their lucky number and it all worked out beautifully! 06.01.2022 Epic wedding roses for today Hundreds of huge imported roses have been individually hand opened petal by petal - it brings out the beautiful colours and shades right down to the center of each bloom. This process is called FLIPPING or REFLEXING. It adds a whole other TIME component to the preparation of the flowers. ... To give you an idea, I had 3 staff on Friday doing the initial prep, and then yesterday I had 2 staff for 6hours each doing all the flipping. Its a very popular look, but comes with challenges as if its not done properly, there can be a lot of wastage. See more

03.01.2022 I was very humbled to be part of a series of Business Hero interviews with Angela Vithoulkas recently! Angela champions the causes and advocates for small businesses in Australia in so many ways with her SME Association of Australia- she is a hero to me!

03.01.2022 Designing a tablescape involves close liaison with caterer, stylist and florist to make sure all the elements work well together and ENHANCE THE GUEST EXPERIENCE as well. I always consult with the event caterer, so that I plan the table flowers to suit the style of meal that is being served. I don’t like the idea that guests need to move flowers glassware and candles around, to fit platters and dishes being served to the table. I also ALWAYS consider the guest experience..., so my centerpieces are always carefully placed and SHAPED so that guests can see each other without flowers obstructing them. Lastly, small floral or botanical details like this fern set out at each place setting ELEVATE the tablescape and connect the guests with the flowers - even just momentarily.... setting their mood for the event and meal to follow. 02.01.2022 Size doesnt matter when LOVE is your motivation and PURPOSE We did the most beautiful wedding on the weekend and it inspired me to think about what CAN be achieved to make weddings happen during this unusual time These are some of the issues this couple had:... The brides parents and family couldnt be at their daughters wedding as they live in the UK. The couples venue was closed down to due Covid19. Their wedding date was postponed from early April - and only rebooked 6 days before their wedding. So this is what they did: When the restrictions lifted last week to allow 10 people at a wedding, they decided to proceed and let their LOVE be the main focus - it wasnt about the crowd, the show, the paparazzi. .............................. For me, it was a very special wedding to be part of, as my own philosophy has always been less is more.I cant bear watching young couples and families hosting weddings and events where the whole focus is about keeping up with the Joness. This wedding was about 2 people in LOVE - and thats what really matters# #sydneywedding #restrictionslifted #loveiswhatmatters See more

01.01.2022 2020 taught me so much. The main thing, is to find something to smile about every day! There is MAGIC right in front of us, that if we stop to take the time to appreciate, be grateful for, acknowledge, or take in, we can BANISH negativity and doubt, anxiety and fear. ... And we can SMILE. There is ALWAYS A SILVER LINING with every challenge we face, and 2020 has taught me to appreciate the challenges, because I can stretch myself mentally, emotionally, and physically to overcome and possibly even BENEFIT from them. To all my colleagues in the EVENT INDUSTRY - venues, caterers, planners , musicians, hire companies, growers, - we’ve all faced a most difficult year for sure... what can we possibly have to smile about?? For me, I was so TOUCHED by the way we all were able to deliver our events for our clients under the most difficult circumstances - yet the teamwork had an element of COMERADERIE that I’ve never felt before - because we were all facing the same shitty situations and trying our best just to keep going and forging ahead despite it all Every event we managed to produce in 2020 - despite all the restrictions, brought a smile to me - as we all did our thing, with a different and deeper level of appreciation, gratitude, and comeraderie. Happy New Year everyone Debbixx

01.01.2022 PALETTE I’ve had quite a few message and comments about this palette being so different and asking me how I had the idea to design in these colours! The background is that when I went to this gorgeous house, I noticed all the ornate carpets and furnishings, and the internal colours of the walls and surfaces and also got some inspo from a gorgeous coat @louisvuitton that Sammy the bride was wearing at our meeting. Putting it all together, I came up with this palette and I ...would SOOOO do it all over again The other point to note, was that Daniel - the groom, did not want ANY greenery! So instead, I used BROWNERY under the flowers to give the structure and support to the flowers! The caramel colour of the bracken ferns and dried buxus were also strong colours taken from the artwork in the house and really added a gorgeous contrast for the blooms. I love working with couples who are BRAVE AND BOLD and TRUST my judgement ESPECIALLY when it’s something so unusual as this combo! I’m so pleased with how it turned out!
