22.01.2022 Happy August Everyone - I hope wherever you are in the world you are safe.Still feeling really fortunate that where I live we have thus far been relatively untouched This weeks WORKOUT WEDNESDAY is utilising a Magic Circle for some hip, inner/outer thigh, and abdominal love. I call this the Gingerbread Man Walk but Im sure you can think of a better name (does it even need a name? probs not) ... - Anyhoo, place the Magic Circle above your ankle bones in the softest part of your lower leg (usually just below where your calf muscle gets smaller). - Walk with as little wobble as possible down the length of your mat. Return, do again. - When I teach this in a group class we have a bit of a giggle and race to see who can get to the end of their mat first - Version #2, step inside the circle and pull the legs apart so it doesnt drop to the floor. 21.01.2022 Looking a bit like a Chookbut hey, its WORKOUT WEDNESDAY which means its time to get creative with the foam roller. KNEELING SPLIT PREP (front and side) Why not try something a little bit different? This exercise will most likely challenge your balance as well as your connectivity around your hips. Itd be really easy to hang out in this exercise so make sure to pull up and engage the quad of the straight leg thats on the roller and not go out too far.... Feel free to add whatever arm/torso variations youd like. 3-5 reps of both versions will probably be plenty to start - remember to keep the range of motion small, especially if youve never done anything like this before - listen to your body Interested in a whole mat class with me? 20.01.2022 Is it Wednesday already?? Then that means it’s time for WORKOUT WEDNESDAY! Had the hubby pump up the FitBall today because tomorrow morning bright and early is a new/old class. Old because I taught at 6:00AM on Thursdays for ten plus years and ended the class when I moved south to give myself a break. New because now that I’m waking up at sparrow’s fart (pre sunrise this morning) it seemed silly not to add it back on to the schedule. The other new thing is that it’s going ...to be a FitBall only class. Normally I would’ve really stressed out about chopping and changing the schedule but now am trying to go more with the flow of how I’m feeling instead of what I think I’m supposed to or should be doing. Anyone else with me on that?? ...So, I did the first half of this flow with a client this morning (thanks Trish) and then played around with adding a bit of TEASER once I’d moved the mat out to the verandah. PLEASE NOTE: there is a solid window behind me that the ball is up against because if there wasn’t this (for me) would be undoable The first part is just a really lovely way to open up the chest, upper back, neck and head in a supported way - let’s call it EXTENDED ARM CIRCLES. 16.01.2022 It’s not about me, it’s about the view, lol Backlighting is the way to go so please join me for today’s SILHOUETTE version of WORKOUT WEDNESDAY. I mowed some lawn today. I say ‘some’ because we have a bit of a property and right now we’re operating with a ten year old mower sporting a broken blade. Did I mention that it’s powered by a rechargeable battery that lasts 20-45 minutes depending on the length and gnarliness of the grass/weeds you’re cutting? Needless to say an upg...rade is in our near future but before then it is what it is, which is a bit of a slog. So, long story short (there is a point to this intro) my hips are tight from pushing the uncooperative mower and so in order to open them up I thought today I’d do a little LUNGE-Y FLOW. Now, you might be asking, is this Pilates? Well, technically no but, maybe?? If you believe that Pilates is movement based exercise and that the so called Pilates Principles are embodied in what you’re doing then, sure, let’s call it Pilates-ishAnyhoo, it feels good. So, things to think about and pay attention to: When you start in your kneeling lunge make sure that your front foot is ahead of your knee so that when you shift your weight forward you’re not over flexing your knee joint. Use your hands for balance and move them as you need to to make this work for your body. Keep breathing. Pay attention to the level of your hips, try to keep them even. I rushed through this but generally would spend at least three or four breaths in each place so it would realistically be less flowy. Keep your abdominal support so that you don’t hang in either your low back or the hip flexor of the back leg. 15.01.2022 OMG its Workout Wednesday! More Magic Circle for the month of August and here is one of my favourite ways to do SWAN. I love the way that the resistance of the circle allows you a solid connection to the back of the shoulders. I feel very powerful when I do it this wayand who doesnt want to feel strong? 12.01.2022 Welcome to Julys last WORKOUT WEDNESDAY This will also be the last FOAM ROLLER exercise for a while because August will bring some Magic Circle Magic DRINKY BIRD is truly one of my favourite exercises, I mean whats not to love? You work your balance, you strengthen your hips, and you def have to pay attention to your two way stretch and try not to fall over.This is a new version with a little extra work once you have tipped over.... If you have the sound down and are not grooving to my non-stop instructions, basically you reach everything away from your centre - that includes the hands and arms, the head and upper back and the long (always wished mine were longer) and lifted back leg including a super strong push thru that heel. Things to remember: soft shoulders - wide & open collar bones - long spine - belly pulled in - knee of lifted leg facing down to the floor - soft standing knee if youre a hyperextender like me. 07.01.2022 Sometimes I dont feel motivated to post something but I always have at least one person ask me what Im planning for Workout Wednesday which gives me momentum to film a little something and keep my streak of continuous Wednesdays going. We all need a little bit of external motivation every once in awhile, right?So thanks to those of you that ask This weeks exercise is another with the Magic Circleand its guaranteed to induce wiggles but thats part of the fun. Its a ...bit of a balance/hamstring/long, tall spine, kind of a thingy - basically a full bodied exercise, yeehaw Tips - In the first variation the circle is above your ankle bones, make sure you find a spot that is as comfortable as possible - In the second variation the placement somewhere in front of the back shin with the circle then hooked just above the heel of the front leg - Try not to lean but lift instead and stay as tall and vertical as possible - If balance is an issue for you then definitely do the exercise but use a wall for support, especially in var #2 - Try for somewhere between 10-15-20 slow sustained pulls in each position, it doesnt look like much but your legs will get tired because of the stability work thats happening with the standing leg - As always - have fun and remember, as a choreographer I used to work with said, its just movement . . . . #dragonflypilates #workoutwednesday #pilates #pilatesmat #contrology #magiccircle #resistanceexercise #balance #wigglesaregood #standononelegandhavefun #townsvillepilates #dragonflypilatesandmovement #pilatesteacher #townsvillesmallbusiness #homebasedstudio

06.01.2022 Verandahlatesdoesn’t that just roll off the tongue, lol. Yep, it’s WORKOUT WEDNESDAY and I’m back outside (well, sortof since it’s mostly enclosed) on my new verandah. Today’s exercise is nice and simple and one of my faves: SPINE STRETCH... Some Goals: Sequential articulation of the spine - head to tail on the way over and tail to head on the way up. Finding the oppositional energy from the toes to the tail and the tail to the fingertips. Anchoring the pelvis and using the strength and support of the abdominals to hold the weight of the back (that sounds kindov’ weird but it’s how I think of it). Some things to note: I’m using the lower window of my covered verandah as a wall so that I have some feedback as I roll up and down. Arm progression goes from low to high - choose the one you like or cycle through them with me. There’s a little bit of side bending at the end rolling back into flexion to honour our three-dimensionality and I had to edit the second side due to time constraints Want more? 03.01.2022 An alternate Workout Wednesday this week I have been doing a heck of a lot of bending, squatting, kneeling, lifting, carrying, scrubbing, and going up and down the stairs countless times - you get the drift. We are out of our house tomorrow morning so I have been doing the final pack-up, cleaning it to hand over to the new owners, and moving some of my Pilates equipment to a friends house for my temporary studio.... Other than being mind numbingly tired due to how much mental and physical work goes into acutally packing up a house youve lived in for ten years, my body is holding up surprisingly well - I am pleased and also, this is why I practice Pilates!!! As JP said, Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. Our interpretation of physical fitness is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure. 01.01.2022 WORKOUT WEDNESDAYS exercise this week is a KITCHEN SINK MAGIC CIRCLECOMBO: A little TEASER, a little CORKSCREW and a little ROLLOVER all connected. Sequence: Start with a Teaser with the in your hands and once youre up place it between your ankles. Try really hard to keep your legs exactly where they are as you roll your body down. (If you reach your arms forward as you descend it will be easier) Once youre down, move the legs up over your hip joints at 90 degrees (s...often the knees if needed) and then do a set of Corkscrew - one circle each direction. Head on into your Rollover trying to get the top of theto touch the ground over your head. Start to rolldown and controlling your momentum, come back up into your Teaser. Grab thewith your hands, keep the legs where they are and roll the body back down to the mat. Other than your legs being lifted, you are actually at the beginning of the flow so repeat but do the Corkscrew starting to the other side. After your second Rollover and once youre back up in your Teaser, grab theagain, close your legs and roll both halves of the body back down to the Mat. Repeat the whole dang thing several more times I would give this exercise towards the end of a Mat class when you are already tired so its about focus, not losing your good Pilates technique, and endurance! 01.01.2022 WORKOUT WEDNESDAY Some of the Pilates Barrel repertoire using the FOAM ROLLER As Ive mentioned before the Roller is a very versatile tool to have at your disposal so if you can get your hands on one I would recommend it. I know they were in short supply where I live at the beginning of our Covid lockdown because everyone was rushing to outfit their home gyms. Set Up:... - Lie on your back with the roller behind your bent knees, feet are on the floor. - Lift your hips up so that you can roll the roller underneath your bum. - The Roller should be under your pelvis, you will know if its too high because your back wont feel supported enough so play around with where it works for your body. - Hold onto the ends of the roller (if you can) to help the shoulders and chest stay open. Variation 1 = KNEE SWAYS Legs are at Table Top (90 degree angle at the hips and knees). Sway them to the right reaching the left thigh away from you so the legs dont slip past each other but stay glued together. This will encourage the twist to come from your spine. Breathing suggestion: Inhale as the legs go to the side and exhale as they return to centre. Variation 2 = STRAIGHT LEG SWAYS As above but with straight legs Keep the knuckles of your big toes together so that it is still a spine twist. They dont have to be big to be effective. Breathing suggestion: same as above. Variation 3 = KNEE SWAY/QUARTER CIRCLE/DOUBLE TOE TAP Legs start at Table Top position again. Sway them to one side and then let the legs start to circle away from you until you touch your toes to the mat, pull the thighs up the centre and back to where you started. Reverse for the second side. Breathing suggestion: one full breath for each side, i.e. inhale as the legs sway and then exhale as they circle and pull back up the middle.
