25.01.2022 It was my absolute pleasure to bring baby Cameron into the world (and what a head of hair!). Thank you to his proud parents, Cheyne and Lisa for letting us share in this precious moment. @cheynesim #femaleobstetrician #femalegynaecologist #obgyn #sutherlandshire #sydney #pregnancycare #caesarean #birth #baby #fertility #laparoscopicsurgery #doctorsofinstagram #kareenaprivatehospital #theshire #lovemyjob #obstetrician #gynaecologist

23.01.2022 Working on those Monday vibes! Hope you all have a fantastic day!

23.01.2022 Its International Bereaved Mothers Day, when we recognise mums who have experienced the tragic loss of a baby or child. My heart goes out to you all For mums who may be looking for a place to find information on mental health during pregnancy, COPE (Centre of Perinatal Excellence) is a great place to start.

23.01.2022 We know that even low levels of alcohol consumption may have harmful effects on the fetus. Our colleague of obstetricians, RANZCOG states, The safest and best advice is not to drink alcohol at all during the pregnancy. This is an important message that we as health care professionals need to make clear to pregnant women.

23.01.2022 Hope everyone finds some time for themselves this weekend!... I’ll keep trying!

22.01.2022 Im wearing these colourful socks loud and proud today in support of Crazy Socks for Docs day, which is all about breaking down the stigma around mental health experienced by doctors, nurses and health care professionals. We are all human beings just like everyone else and may at times experience depression and anxiety. Unfortunately, in our industry there still exists a fear of reaching out for support for mental health due to the discrimination that can often follow seeking... help. Hopefully more conversations and awareness will lead to a reduction in suicide of health care professionals across the world. #crazysocks4docs #rmcounselling #mentalhealthawareness #femaleobstetrician #femalegynaecologist #obgyn #sutherlandshire #sydney #pregnancycare #fertilityspecialist #IVF #laparoscopicsurgery #endometriosis #fibroid #womenshealth #doctorsofinstagram #theshire #obstetrician #gynaecologist #sydneyobstetrician #sydneygynaecologist

19.01.2022 Elective Surgery and IVF Update: Wonderful news today with the Australian Government lifting restrictions on elective surgeries and IVF after the Anzac Day weekend. All Category 2 surgeries, some Category 3 surgeries and IVF are set to gradually restart. This decision has been based on a satisfactory flattening of the curve and the arrival of millions of face masks and other personal protective equipment (PPE). We expect more announcements in May when remaining surgical restrictions are planned to be further reviewed. #electivesurgery #IVF #femalegynaecologist #femaleobstetrician #sydneyobstetrician #obstetrician #obgyn #sydneygynaecologist #gynaecologist #fertility #womenshealth #coronavirus #covid19 #theshire #kareenaprivatehospital

19.01.2022 Happy Mothers Day mum and to all the mums out there . After becoming a mum last year, Ive experienced some of the most beautiful moments of my life, but also some of the hardest and most exhausting. There is just nothing like the emotional and physical rollercoaster that motherhood brings. Its really deepened the relationship that I have with my own mum, and today I want to say thank you mum for your love, support and everything you do for me! I love you #happymothersday #hmd #femaleobstetrician #femalegynaecologist #obgyn #womenshealth #sutherlandshire

17.01.2022 While coronavirus restrictions are easing, Ive had a number of discussions with patients about their unease and fear that we may be hit with a second wave of infections. I hear your anxiety and agree that we shouldnt get complacent. Its important as ever that we continue to maintain social distancing in public, as well as good hand and cough hygiene. Im optimistic that we as a society can do it. #femaleobstetrician #femalegynaecologist #obgyn #sutherlandshire #sydney #pregnancycare #fertilityspecialist #IVF #fertility #laparoscopicsurgery #surgeon #endometriosis #disease #periodpain #periodproblems #womenshealth #coronavirus #covid19 #doctorsofinstagram #kareenaprivatehospital #theshire #lovemyjob #sydneyobstetrician #sydneygynaecologist #obstetrician #gynaecologist

17.01.2022 An annual flu shot is your best protection against the flu and has never been more important with the spread of coronavirus. This is especially true for pregnant women and can be safely given at any stage of pregnancy. It will protect both the mother and baby after birth. 17.01.2022 Did you know that having a baby increases the likelihood of developing depression more than at any other time of your life? While the "baby blues" and feeling emotional and stressed at times is normal, when symptoms persist for two weeks or more in the first year of having your baby, you may be experiencing postnatal depression. Postnatal depression is common, affecting one in seven mothers. Its symptoms can worsen over time and last months or even years (if left untreated), ...impacting your ability to care for yourself and your baby. Symptoms of postnatal depression may include: Feelings of being sad, num or distressed. Lost interest or enjoyment in life. Highly emotional or sensitive, often on the verge of crying. A loss of confidence or feeling worthless. Irritable, angry or resentful towards others around you. Difficulties making decisions or thinking clearly. Feeling alone or disconnected from others. Having thoughts of harming yourself, your baby and/or other children. Its important to know that while you may feel alone, there are many other women (and men) who experience these symptoms following the birth of their baby. Postnatal depression can be treated and managed. If you feel like you are struggling with any of the above symptoms, speak to your GP about accessing support. Treatment for mental health can be subsidised under Medicare. 12.01.2022 Treatment of endometriosis is a passion of mine. Its a disease that affects about one in 10 Australian women, which causes pain and infertility. Unfortunately, due to a lack of awareness of the disease, diagnosis can often take several years. Ive put together this brief summary to help raise awareness of the disease, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. The information provided in this summary is general in nature and you should always seek your own advice from your do...ctor or health professional. 11.01.2022 This really resonates with me and my journey as a mum

10.01.2022 Today I wanted to talk about advanced laparoscopic surgery (this photo is from a combined case I was performing with my colleague Dr Dean Conrad). Its a procedure that I perform regularly with my specialist team of doctors and nurses, and I thought it may be of interest to try and explain some of the medical jargon surrounding it, what it involves, the advantages it offers and when it is appropriate. What it involves: A laparoscopy, also known as keyhole surgery, is per...formed in a hospital with the patient under a general anaesthetic. By making a small incision (cut) usually in the umbilicus (belly button), we can insert a thin instrument called a laparoscope that has a camera and light at the front of it, allowing a view of the patients pelvic organs on a monitor in real time. Carbon dioxide gas is used to inflate the abdomen, allowing the gynaecologist to see and operate on the organs of the pelvis. Other small cuts are made on the abdomen approximately 1 cm long to allow for instruments to be used instead of one large cut. Advantages: Laparoscopic surgery offers several advantages over open surgery such as more cosmetically aesthetic with smaller scars, reduced risk of infection, considerably faster recovery and reduced pain. Light activity can usually be resumed within a few days of the surgery. Why have a laparoscopy: Not only is a laparoscopy used to look at pelvic organs and identify a problem or cause of pain such as endometriosis, but also to perform many operations. These include: * Treatment of ovarian cysts * Removal of fallopian tube or ovaries * Treatment of endometriosis * Hysterectomy * Removal of fibroids * Treatment of scar tissue * Infertility surgery * Ectopic pregnancy * Prolapse surgery Please post any comments or questions below! I will get back to everyone. 10.01.2022 Hi Ladies! I regularly talk about and place IUDs or intrauterine devices for my patients and thought it may be helpful to post some information about them, specifically the hormonal IUD: Mirena. What is it and how does it work? While it comes in a large box, as seen in my photo, its actually quite a small, plastic, T-shaped device, which is placed inside the uterus. It releases the hormone progesterone (similar to the hormone produced by the ovaries) into the uterus.... The IUD stops the sperm and egg meeting and thickens the mucus in the cervix, inhibiting sperm from reaching/fertilising an egg. What are the advantages? It protects a woman against pregnancy for 5 years. Its a highly effective form of contraception. Its 100% reversible, with fertility returning to normal once the IUD is removed. It can help reduce heavy bleeding, make periods lighter and occasionally stop them completely. Period pain may reduce. It can be used while breastfeeding. Provides an alternative if you have difficulty taking the hormone estrogen in the combined pill or vaginal ring. What are the disadvantages? It does not protect against STIs. A procedure is required for placement and removal. Placement can be uncomfortable with some women experiencing cramping (it usually settles after a few days). Some irregular bleeding in the initial months. IUDs can fall out, commonly in the first three months of insertion. Placement risks: damage to the wall of the uterus and infection. Possible side effects: bloating, sore/tender breasts, headaches, mood changes, acne and reduction in libido. These side effects nearly always settle with time. How do you arrange to have one? Ideally they are placed by your gynaecologist or specifically trained doctor. You will be given a prescription to purchase the IUD and asked to bring it to your placement procedure. The procedure usually takes less than 10 minutes. For more information speak to your gynaecologist or visit: https://www.mirena-us.com/about-mirena/ https://www.fpnsw.org.au//indiv/contraception/hormonal-iud https://www.fpv.org.au///hormonal-iud-contraception-mirena #IUD #mirena #femalegynaecologist #femaleobstetrician #obgyn #sutherlandshire #sydney #pregnancycare #IVF #fertilityspecialist #infertility #laparoscopicsurgery #laparoscopy #endometriosis #hysterectomy #fibroid #womenshealth #doctorsofinstagram #theshire #obstetrician #gynaecologist #sydneyobstetrician #sydneygynaecologist #fertility #contraception #periodpain #breastfeeding

09.01.2022 As the weather warms up, comfortable sleep during pregnancy can be challenging, but it’s important to remember to sleep on your side from 28 weeks of pregnancy. New research shows that this will halve your risk of stillbirth compared with sleeping on your back. This is because lying on your back presses on major blood vessels, which can reduce blood flow to your womb and oxygen supply to your baby. Changing position during sleep is completely normal and many pregnant women... wake up on their back. Don’t worry if this happens to you, just roll over to your side and start every sleep or nap lying on your side. For more information, speak to your midwife or obstetrician. 03.01.2022 Sadly miscarriage occurs more often than most realise, affecting as many as about one in four pregnancies. It can have a devastating impact on both women and men and lead to anxiety toward future pregnancies. Its completely normal to feel grief, irrespective of the length of the pregnancy. When plans have been made and lives imagined, for it all to be suddenly taken away, the effects should not be underestimated. Below is a link to an article on coping after miscarriage with further information and specialist support contact details: https://www.cope.org.au//pregnancy-loss/coping-miscarriage/

03.01.2022 Hey everyone! Today I want to talk about the Cervical Screening Test, which replaced the Pap Smear test in 2017. Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. The key is early detection of HPV infection and early treatment if necessary. Here are some relevant things to know: It’s recommended to start cervical screening from 25 years of age and then every 5 years, if your results are normal. The Cervical Screening Test detects the human papillomavirus (known ...as HPV), which is a common sexually transmitted infection. Around 90% of the population will be infected with HPV in their lifetime. HPV can cause changes to cells in the cervix and if left untreated in rare cases, can develop into cervical cancer. Otherwise, the majority of genital HPV infections are asymptomatic and are cleared within a year. Even if you are not currently sexually active, it’s still important to have regular Cervical Screening Tests every 5 years from 25 to 74 years of age, including women who have been through menopause. For more information, speak to your GP or gynaecologist.
