02.01.2022 Medicinal Cannabis prescribing by Dr. Arrlann Christie at Kingscliff Health I thought I would post this as there has been a significant increase in interest in the medicinal Cannabis prescribing I now provide at Kingscliff Health. Since completing advanced training and going through the TGA approval process, I have prescribed MC for over a hundred patients. I am now prescribing MC at Kingscli Health as an aliate of Cannabis Doctors Australia (CDA), which provides expert adv...ice and support with the legal and medico-legal issues involved with prescribing MC. Drug: MC can most easily be separated into CBD and THC, where THC is the group of psychoactive molecules. Both groups of molecules are prescribed when clinically indicated, though most patients commonly start with a trial of cannabidiol (CBD) oil and no psychoactive THC. This is akin to starting paracetamol before taking stronger pain relief. CBD is not addictive, does not impair cognitive function or driving and does not register on drug screening. Indeed, it has evidence to possibly improve sleep, decrease anxiety, decrease inflammation and can decrease THC-induced side effects. Evidence: There are many studies showing benefit for MC in many conditions, however there are also conflicting studies and from a medical perspective the quality of the evidence is very limited. The TGA therefore grants compassionate access to MC as a 2nd line experimental treatment. My experience matches what is found in research articles and the stories you hear on the news, which is that results are quite variable with many patients reporting vastly improved quality of life while other patients opt to cease treatment due to limited or no benefit. Indications: There are over 40 chronic conditions for which the TGA will grant approval for the use of MC where conventional treatment has failed or is contraindicated. Guidance with summarised evidence for some indications (e.g. anxiety, epilepsy, chronic pain, cancer pain, chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting, palliative care, MS) can be found on the TGA website: www.tga.gov.au/medicinal-cannabis-guidancedocuments. It is important to discuss this with your regular GP. Process: As this is a MC service you must have a referral from your regular GP who agrees to oversee all your other healthcare needs. Once you have discussed with your GP if MC might be right for you, you can register online with CDA at: www.cannabisdoctorsaustralia.com.au. Additional information and frequently asked questions are available on their website and at www.kingsclihealth.com.au. Please feel free to contact Kingscli Health on (02) 6670 1400 if you have questions on how to obtain a MC appointment, or CDA clinics if you have any further questions on MC in general or wish to access it from one of their other locations or via Telehealth.
