20.01.2022 I always tell younger patients to hold out as long as possible before having a knee replacement because something new may come up. Indeed every few months a better design, material or technique comes along. And so it was today with new Trabecular Metal tibial tray for the Persona Knee. TM trays have the lowest failure rate in the National Joint Replacement Registry but only today became available for the new Persona design. Combined with the Vit-D highly cross-linked polyethylene it is the best available.

16.01.2022 More than 250yrs ago, Hunter, the great Scottish surgeon, noted Ulcerated cartilage is a troublesome thing, once damaged it is not repaired. Many techniques to repair joint cartilage have been tried including micro-fracture and autologous cartilage cell implantation (MACI). Mixed outcomes and high cost saw the end of MACI. Recent efforts have focused on micro fracture with the use of hydrogels to stabilise the clot and improve infill. This week I was one of the first to use JOINT-REP a new hydrogel from Device Technologies. While easy to use, it is for acute cartilage defects and has limited, if any use in osteoarthritis.

14.01.2022 Don’t be the first and don’t be the last. Two years ago the Lingard hospital purchased a Stryker Makoplasty robot for assisting in partial and more lately total knee replacement. Recent data has shown the outcomes to probably be superior. So having done the training I did my first robot assisted partial knee replacement today. Went very well with help of Dane from Stryker. Who said you can’t treat an old dog new tricks.
