23.01.2022 Choroid Plexus Cysts Several of our babies recently have had choroid plexus cysts on early ultrasounds. These are rather common. The choroid plexus is a group of cells that lies deep inside the brain and makes the fluid that cushions the brain and surrounds the spinal cord. A cyst there is a tiny "blister" in the cells that make the fluid. If the rest of the ultrasound shows a normal, healthy baby, then choroid plexus cysts are not an indication of any other problems.... Cysts are common in normal, healthy babies, and most cysts are gone by the time the baby is born. Cysts that remain after birth still cause no problems with brain function. 23.01.2022 I guess we were not average, as we either borrowed or bought second-hand all our baby furniture. Baby clothes were the same; they were given to us or bought at the thrift shop. Once out of the cot, they had mattresses on the floor until age 4. No falling out of bed that way. I was a stay-at-home Mum, so we had no childcare costs. My babies were breast fed then they ate whatever Dad and I were having for dinner.

18.01.2022 There are several videos in this link. They are all worthwhile with great info and tips.

18.01.2022 Some child poisonings and overdoses happen when parents give two medicines with different brand names that contain the same active ingredient. Lets remember to check the active ingredient - the chemical name - of the medicine you are using.

15.01.2022 The link explains how vaccines convince our immune system to make antibodies against specific diseases. In pregnancy we advise having the whooping cough vaccine the first visit after 20 weeks so Mum's antibodies have lots of time to get to baby, protecting baby for several months after birth.

14.01.2022 It's not about pregnancy or parenting, but this is important.

14.01.2022 After 2 lovely months with no local spread, Covid-19 has showed up with us again. Were you at Fountain Gate Shopping Centre on the morning of 26 Dec? If so, you should be tested for your own and your loved ones' safety and peace of mind. Click on the photo for more info. 13.01.2022 Updated visitor restrictions for Monash Hospitals, including Monash, Dandenong, and Casey campuses.

12.01.2022 Here is the list of Monash testing sites. All can test children. The link gives addresses and notes whether it is a drive-through or walk-in clinic. Stay safe, Melbourne.

11.01.2022 I keep trying to retire, then you lovely patients keep showing up with new pregnancies and I can hardly bear to leave you. Starting in December, I will be consulting only on Mondays and Thursdays. Face to face appointments are in the morning 8:30 - 12:15, with telehealth appointments in the afternoons from 2:30 - 4:00. In order to cut back on my hours, I am now taking on only patients who have seen me previously, or current patients of our Narre Warren Clinic.

11.01.2022 Petroleum Jelly for Nappy Rash Good old petroleum jelly ( the cheap no-name ones are just as good as Vaseline. ) is what we recommend for nappy rash. It stops the urine and poo from touching baby's skin so it can heal without those irritants. It has no colors, preservatives, or perfume, so baby won't react to it. It is soft and can be easily wiped off, not like some sticky nappy rash creams that have added ingredients and are expensive.... The link has more ideas about using petroleum jelly: https://www.webmd.com/ski//slideshow-petroleum-jelly-uses See more

09.01.2022 Some patients have asked about vaccine safety, especially that of the MMR vaccine and the risk of autism. Here is a link to one of the many studies that find the rates of autism are the same in MMR vaccinated children and un-vaccinated children. This study found that even children with an increased risk of autism (those with older parents, a low birth weight, or an autistic sibling ) do not increase their risk by having the MMR vaccine. The study is here: https://ww...w.acpjournals.org/doi/10.7326/M18-2101 More info on autism here: https://www.healthline.com/health/autism See more

07.01.2022 Have you ever considered being in a medical trial? I have been on both sides. I have administered treatment to patients in a drug trial, and I have been a patient in one as well. The link has lots of information.

05.01.2022 What to Take to Hospital: Some of you will choose to go home 4 hours after delivery, while some who have caesareans will stay three nights. Click on the link for a comprehensive list of useful items to have: https://www.pregnancybirthbaby.org.au/what-to-take-to-hospi

04.01.2022 It's that time of year again. Our snakes are awake and active and will bite if they are frightened or threatened. Read how to best look after a snake bite victim.

04.01.2022 Capillary Hemangiomata: These "strawberry marks" are rather common on babies. They are not usually visible at birth, but develop in the first few months, so parents are often worried that it is a bruise or scrape. They can grow quite quickly for months to a year, then they start to decrease in size. Most are gone by age 5. Nearly all capillary hemangiomata disappear leaving no scar or mark.... Only some need treatment, especially those right at the eye, throat, or anus, but these are rare. The link has more information: https://www.verywellfamily.com/strawberry-hemangioma-4687220 See more

03.01.2022 Parents can now apply for a certificate in memory of a baby who was lost less than 20 weeks' gestation. After 20 weeks, a formal Birth Certificate is issued.

01.01.2022 Here is a post I put up in May. We have another baby in the clinic with a "hole in the heart" Don't be too worried - a VSD almost always heals itself, sometimes before baby is born.
