25.01.2022 There's been some interesting books on the shelf over the last few months. 1984 - George Orwell - seemed an appropriate read during a pandemic and worldwide unrest, published in 1949 this book still speaks with a relevant boldness which is unsettling and intriguing. 9 Ways to Raise a Resilient Child - Justin Coulson - parenting is tough, resiliency is important, this is a great read. Explores identity, psychological flexibility, self-control, stinking-thinking, relation...ships, autonomy, and screen time. The Advantage - Patrick Lencioni - This is my second or third time through this book, and part of our leadership team's book club. If you are involved in an organization I'm starting to think of this as a must-read. The Practice Acceleration Method - Tristan Bond - A passionate author on a mission, some useful tips for health care businesses. Surgery of the Skin - June Robinson - This one might be a little more specific, but nice to move beyond the basics. See more

17.01.2022 Psychological Safety in the Workplace At Barton Lane Practice we are committed to nurturing an enjoyable, sustainable and collaborative working environment. Simple but not easy. Workplace culture is not something achieved by jazzy slogans or pep talks, rather it is sum all the small choices we make. How we journey not where we arrive. ... To help me understand this I’m reading Amy Edmondson’s 2018 book The Fearless Organization: Creating Psychological Safety in the Workplace for Learning, Innovation, and Growth. In which she defines Psychological Safety as the belief that one will not be punished or humiliated for speaking up with ideas, questions, concerns or mistakes." It is about removing fear from human interaction and replacing it with respect and permission; essential for collaborative, innovative and healthy teams. So critical in healthcare. To illustrate, she quotes a hospital example where the language shifted from Were there any mistakes?, to Was everything as safe as you would have liked? In some ways a similar question but I feel naturally more open and safe to answer the later. Psychological safety is a struggle for many organizations. Barriers to this include self-interest, self-protection, hierarchical structures, poor communication, along with a lack of trust, openness, and understanding. So, what can we do about it? Firstly, recognize that workplace culture is not a destination or the responsibility of a single person. It is the sum of the collective small choices each of us makes every day. Keep working on communication at all levels and methods. Be intentional about listening and seeking understanding. Make it safe to propose and hear novel ideas. Welcome curiosity. Be ok with healthy conflict. We won’t always agree, and a bit of debate and discussion is quite healthy. However, for this to be fruitful, we need to think about our motives, goals, and priorities, and then act in a manner that is humble and considerate. Embrace the feedback cycle. Imagine a sports coach that never gives their players feedback. They will never be able to grow and reach their potential. Feedback should be honest, actionable, and with the goal of making things better. Look for opportunities to give positive feedback and encouragement celebrating the wins of others.

16.01.2022 Advocacy Vs. Inquiry Advocacy is the kind of communication that most people are accustomed to, and it is all about stating your case or making your point... Inquiry is rarer and more important than advocacy. It happens when people ask questions to seek clarity about another person’s statement of advocacy. #becurious

07.01.2022 Basal Cell Carcinomas are the most common type of Skin Cancer. They generally present as slow-growing plaques or nodules. However, there are several sub-types that all have subtle differences appearance and treatment. UV damage from sunlight is the most common cause of these lesions - so slip, slop, slap. It is rare for BCCs to metastasize but as they grow bigger they can invade and damage surrounding tissues. For more info visit https://dermnetnz.org/topics/basal-cell-carcinoma/ Non-Melanoma Skin Cancers including BCCs were the topic of the seventh unit in my studies towards a Certificate of Primary Care Dermatology. https://www.racgp.org.au//certificate-of-primary-care-derm
